After spending some time in Bulgaria (and posting our move to Alaska in the middle), we're exploring our next country - Italy! We flew from Sofia to Rome on everyone's favorite (jk) airlines, Ryanair! After landing in Rome, we made our way to Sorrento during the longest travel day EVER. We've settled into our hotel and are ready to explore the beautiful Sorrento, starting with wandering the streets and alleyways! Our first stop of the day was a kayak tour (you can visit the website for this tour below), which took us to the beautiful Bagni Regina Giovanna, which is a small cove only accessed by hiking or through a small entrance from the open water. We had a lot of fun kayaking around the coast of Italy, and we highly recommend the group we booked with!
After our kayak excursion and a quick snack, Christian headed off to a local barber to get a much needed haircut before dinner! We headed just across the street for dinner, and the food was delicious.
We are SO EXCITED to show you around the Amalfi Coast, as well as head up to Rome and Florence soon.

A tower on the hill overlooking the town, which Paolo Richiedei had constructed in the 19th century, but in 18th century style (design by Inganni), on the site of a convent.
THE PARISH CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA (in Piè del Dosso)
Rebuilt around 1470, it was modified and extended over subsequent centuries. In gothic-Romanesque style, it has a renaissance portal with the architrave resting on candelabra pilasters. The apse is polygonal, built over a previous semicircular apse dating back to the 9th-10th centuries. The terracotta decoration of the windows and cornices on the exterior is interesting.

La Milano-Sanremo NamedSport si svolge sul percorso classico che negli ultimi 110 anni ha collegato Milano con la riviera di Ponente attraverso Pavia, Ovada, il Passo del Turchino per scendere su Genova Voltri. Da lì si procede verso ovest attraverso Varazze, Savona, Albenga fino a Imperia e San Lorenzo al Mare dove, dopo la classica sequenza dei Capi (Mele, Cervo e Berta), si affrontano le due salite inserite negli ultimi decenni: Cipressa (1982) e Poggio di Sanremo (1961). La Cipressa misura 5,6 km ad una pendenza media del 4,1% e presenta una discesa molto tecnica che riporta sulla SS1 Aurelia.

A 9 km dall’arrivo inizia la salita del Poggio di Sanremo (3,7 km a meno del 4% di pendenza media con punte dell’8% nel tratto che precede lo scollinamento). La salita presenta una carreggiata leggermente ristretta e quattro tornanti nei primi 2 km. La discesa è molto tecnica su strada asfaltata, ristretta in alcuni passaggi, con un susseguirsi di tornanti, di curve e controcurve fino all’immissione nella statale Aurelia. L’ultima parte della discesa si svolge nell’abitato di Sanremo. Ultimi 2 km su lunghi rettilinei cittadini. Da segnalare a 850 m dall’arrivo una curva a sinistra su rotatoria e ai 750 m dall’arrivo l’ultima curva che immette sul rettilineo finale di via Roma, tutto su fondo in asfalto.

Km 278 - ARMA DI TAGGIA
Dalle colline dell’entroterra con estesi oliveti, al mare con gli stabilimenti balneari; il paese è praticamente diviso in due parti: Taggia, centro storico nella valle Argentina, ed Arma, che si affaccia sul Mar Ligure. Questo territorio, dalla storia molto antica (i primi insediamenti risalirebbero ad epoca pre-romana), ha un forte legame con il proprio passato e le proprie tradizioni: ricchissimo il folclore, con rievocazioni storiche molto suggestive. Tra queste, una delle più antiche della Liguria: la Festa di San Benedetto Revelli che, con cortei, spettacoli, giochi pirotecnici, falò e musica, ricorda il voto al Santo Patrono fatto nel 1625 affinché proteggesse la città da saccheggi e soprusi durante la Guerra dei trent’anni. Ad Arma di Taggia si tiene il Premio Ossi di Seppia, concorso nazionale di poesia e letteratura inedita, dedicato ad Eugenio Montale.
ARRIVO - SANREMO
Sanremo è la città dei fiori e della canzone italiana, poiché il suo Teatro Ariston ospita ogni anno il Festival di Sanremo, quest’anno giunto alla sessantottesima edizione.
L’altra grande tradizione sportiva delle città, oltre alla Milano-Sanremo NamedSport, è fondata sulle quattro ruote, con lo storico Rally di Sanremo. Sanremo è conosciuta in tutto il mondo anche per Corso Fiorito (Sanremoinfiore), la tradizionale sfilata dei carri fioriti, un benvenuto alla primavera fra i profumi e i colori dei fiori che hanno reso celebre l’omonima riviera.
Sanremo resta comunque famosa grazie alla propria posizione, al proprio microclima e alle bellezze paesaggistiche; a tutto ciò si aggiunge un passato glorioso che ha lasciato tracce importanti nel centro storico della cittadina (denominato La Pigna per la forma “ad avvolgimento” delle mura) dove si possono ammirare la Basilica Collegiata Cattedrale di San Siro, il Santuario della Madonna della Costa, l’Eremo di San Michele e la Chiesa di Cristo Salvatore, costruita a fine Ottocento dalla nobiltà russa, oggi uno dei simboli della città, insieme al Casinò che si trova poco distante.
Rilevanti sotto il profilo architettonico anche le molte ville private che si affacciano sul lungomare: Palazzo Bellevue, per molti anni albergo di lusso e dal 1963 sede del Comune; Palazzo Borea d’Olmo, a pochi metri dal Teatro Ariston, uno dei più importanti edifici barocchi della Liguria Occidentale; Villa Ormond, nota per il suo parco, ricco di piante esotiche; Villa Nobel, in stile moresco, ultima residenza di Alfred Nobel e oggi sede di incontri culturali e l’adiacente Villa King, in stile liberty, così come Castello Devachan.
