Explore the chill surf beach vibe and other tourist spots in La Union, one of the favorite quick weekend destinations of young Metro Manila dwellers. Discover what else La Union has to offer and stay for more than a quick weekend.

See and Do
La Union is synonymous with surfing and relaxing beach getaways, with San Juan being the go-to spot for tourists who want to catch the waves. For outdoor lovers, you can also hike to Tangadan Falls where you’ll be treated to scenic forest views and a cold shower under the falls while floating on a bamboo raft or go cliff-jumping if you’re feeling more adventurous. If La Trinidad in Benguet has strawberry-picking, La Union has grape-picking. Explore the vineyards of La Union and harvest your own grapes or taste their locally-made wines. Balay Anito Falls Hike - Brgy. Lettac Sur, Santol, La Union - DV (March 20, 2022)

On our third day in Santol, Sir Khen brought us to Brgy. Lettac Sur to see the Balay Anito Falls. According to legend, “in the early times locals have sighted a ball of fire on this waterfall. In the paganistic tradition, balls of fire were spirits or anitos. Balay means a house or a dwelling. Hence the name, Balay Anito.” After registering with the barangay, we entered a trail marked by a welcome arch with the name of the falls. After 15 mins, we finally reached the lip of the falls where the water falls down to the plunge pool about 10 meters below. According to Sir Khen, there are two ways to get to the plunge pool below. The old way was to by clinging to tree roots and vines exposed along the precipice at the side of the falls and the new and less dangerous way was to hike up a narrow trail and then down to the plunge pool. Of course, we chose the more tiring but less dangerous way. The plunge pool or “ban-aw” as they call it is about 20 meters deep. About 80 meters further downstream is another drop that is about 15 meters or more. Most of the information and photos I saw in the internet shows Balay Anito Falls as just one layer of waterfall. But what we saw is that it has the upper layer which is more well known and a lower layer which is deeper than the first and also with a wide plunge pool that looks very deep from where we were standing. After taking some pictures and drone shots, we went for a swim in the refreshing waters of this enchanting waterfalls.
