Santo Niño Church Tour, Cebu, Philippines.

Santo Niño Church Tour, Cebu, Philippines.

The Basílica Menor del Santo Niño de Cebú is commonly known as the Santo Niño Basilica. It was founded in the 1565 and is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country, it is built on the spot where the image of the Santo Niño de Cebú was found during the expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi. The icon, a statuette of the Child Jesus, is the same one presented by Ferdinand Magellan to the chief consort of Rajah Humabon upon the royal couple's christening on April 14, 1521. It was found by a soldier named Juan de Camuz forty years later, preserved in a wooden box, after Legazpi had razed a local village.

A Walkthrough of the Basilica Minore del Sto Niño | Virtual Walk Tour || PH Walkthrough

A trip to Cebu is not complete without a visit to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño, the country's oldest Roman Catholic church.

The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu is the sanctuary of the Image of the Holy Child—Santo Nio, which is managed by the Order of Saint Augustine - The Augustinians.

The original chapel built on the spot where the figure of the Holy Child was discovered was destroyed by fire in 1566. It was reported to have been constructed by Fr. Diego de Herrera works with nipa and wood. In the year 1605, Fr. Pedro Torres began working on the new church, also made of wood and nipa. It was completed in 1626 but burned down again in 1628. In 1628, Fr. Juan Medina began the construction of another church using stone and bricks, which was a significant innovation at the time. The construction was halted because the structure was discovered to be defective – the bricks used appeared to melt when exposed to air. Father Provincial Bergao, Governor-General Fernando Valdes, Bishop Manuel Antonio Decio y Ocampo of Cebu, and Juan de Albarran Prior of the Santo Nio began laying the stone foundations of the current church on February 29, 1735. A great deal of assistance was provided. Fr. Antonio Lopez, the prior of San Nicolas, aided the people in his district as well. Talisay residents also put in four weeks of effort, and Fr. Francisco Aballe likewise tried to assist his Mactan parishioners.

The 30-foot Santo Niño statue | New Landmark in CEBU

#santoniño #cebu #philippines

Cebuanos can now spend their time praying and hold special celebrations at a new chapel of the Sr. Sto. Niño built by a private development firm at the Senior Citizens’ Park across the administrative building of the Cebu City Hall.
The chapel is now open for the elderly who want to have a place for prayer and meditation and offers a good venue for weddings and religious events.
Louie Ferrer, chair of Cebu2World (C2W), said in a statement on Monday the Sto. Niño Chapel, which was finished months after the 30-foot Santo Niño, was blessed by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma on Sunday.
“The Sto. Niño, 500 years since its arrival to Cebu, has become the core of Catholic Cebuano identity. Our relationship with the Senyor is very personal for us Cebuanos. You can see a likeness in almost every home. Even in Carbon, you will see the Sto. Niño in many stalls,” Ferrer said.
C2W, a subsidiary of engineering and infrastructure developer Megawide, entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Cebu clergy granting permission for regular masses and weddings at the chapel.
Palma also led the first Holy Mass celebrated at the chapel.
Ferrer considered the chapel as a new landmark that brings together Cebunos in the journey of a modern Carbon Public Market.
The chapel itself, which covers an area of 300 square meters, is inspired by both the shape of the Sto. Nino’s crown and the fluid motion of the Sinulog dance.
It can accommodate at least 150 parishioners, while the space leading to the park also served as an extension of the chapel's main seating capacity.
The surrounding Senior Citizens’ Park has a 3,704-square meter landscape where devotees and guests can stroll around. Elderly park-goers also have a good view of the waterfront and the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway.
There are also food outlets and well-maintained public toilets in the area

Church tour in Basilica del Santo Niño Church in Cebu

let's take a look at the beautiful and oldest catholic church built in Cebu. The Famous Basilica del Santo Nino in Cebu,

Cebu Historic Tour | Santo Niño de Cebu & Fort San Pedro

This is the final video in my Cebu travel series which was filmed in October of 2019. After leaving Mactan and having lunch in STK Ta Bai filled with marvelous antiques, Khrys and I had a chance to visit some of Cebu's historic sites such as the famed Magellan's Cross, Basilica Minora del Satno Niño de Sebu and Fort San Pedro.

I just didn't want to mention this in the video, but the reason why I said that the experience with the tour guides was a mixed bag was because the guy in charge (who left us back at the resort) was trying to very clearly rip us off with the money, by pretending that we didn't in fact pay for everything in advance (which we did) and that we owed another 3 or 4 thousand pesos to give to the driver, which would make it an additional $60 or $80 US dollars. At the end we got the driver himself to convince the guy in charge to cut the crap and accept the money already given early that morning. So it all worked out in the end.

This was a really fitting conclusion to this trip to Cebu which was overall filled with so much excitement that it took five episodes just to share the highlights.

I hope you enjoyed this episode as well as the rest of this series. It had really gotten me to appreciate the history and culture of this amazing country even more. I am really looking forward to being able to visit more locations within the Philippines once the situation with the pandemic makes it possible.

Magellan's Cross Pavilion is a stone kiosk in Cebu City, Philippines. The structure is situated on Plaza Sugbo beside the Basilica del Santo Niño[1] It houses a Christian cross believed to have been planted by explorers of the Spanish expedition of the first circumnavigation of the world, led by Ferdinand Magellan, upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippines on April 21, 1521.

Along with the Basilica del Santo Niño's church and convent buildings, the pavilion is a declared National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines.

The Basílica Menor del Santo Niño de Cebú (Minor Basilica of the Holy Child of Cebú), commonly known as Santo Niño Basilica, is a basilica in Cebu City in the Philippines that was founded in 1565 by Fray Andrés de Urdaneta and Fray Diego de Herrera. It is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country, allegedly built on the spot where the image of the Santo Niño de Cebú was found during the expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi.

This image of the Child Jesus is the same presented by Ferdinand Magellan to the chief consort of Rajah Humabon on the occasion of their royal Baptism to Roman Catholicism on 14 April 1521. The image was found by a soldier named Juan de Camuz forty years later, preserved in a wooden box, after Legazpi had razed a local village. When Pope Paul VI made the church a basilica in 1965, he declared it to be the symbol of the birth and growth of Christianity in the Philippines.

The present building was completed from 1739–1740, and was designated by the Holy See as the Mother and Head of all Churches in the Philippines.
