Lima Travel Guide - Peru Captial Exploration

Lima Travel Guide - Peru Captial Exploration

Lima is the capital of Peru and its largest city. Founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, the modern city is a curious mix of the modern mega city with some 'islands of modernity', large but orderly slum areas and colonial architecture in the city center. Lima was the seat of the Spanish rule during 300 years, and as such it has wonderful churches, cloisters and monasteries that are worth a visit.

Lima is also the best place to try the wonderful Peruvian cuisine, which has a huge variety of ingredients from coast, mountain and Amazon regions. The cold sea current in front of Peru's large coast makes the sea very rich in fish and seafood, which have a great taste due to the special plankton they eat. Fish and seafood restaurants are therefore worth the time, and not expensive.

Lima is built upon a valley surrounded by an extremely arid desert. In the summer, the weather is usually beautiful, very warm and sunny, sometimes with rains around January. In the winter, the city is overcast and rainy for days at a time. The rain in the wintertime doesn't fall hard, but it gets everything wet.

Districts of Lima :

Miraflores
Situated on the coast, Miraflores is considered to be one of the finest districts of Lima and is very popular with tourists.

Barranco

Cercado de Lima

San Isidro

La Molina

San Borja

Santiago de Surco

Jesús María

Javier Prado East
Contains these suburbs or barrios: Ate Vitarte, Chorillos, Cieneguilla, El Agustino, La Molina, La Victoria, San Borja, San Juan de Miraflores, Santa Anita, Santiago de Surco, San Luis, Surquillo, Villa El Salvador, Villa Maria del Triunfo.

Central
Consists of four areas: Centro Historico, Barrios Altos, Barrio Chino, and Santa Beatriz.

Javier Prado West
Includes the neighborhoods of Bellavista, Brena, Carmen de la Legua Reynoso, Callao, Jesus Maria, La Perla, Lince, La Punta, Magdalena del Mar, Pueblo Libre, San Isidro, and San Miguel, as well as the islands of San Lorenzo, El Frontón, and Cavinzas.

Lima's pre-Hispanic and colonial architecture is beautiful and the city has several museums (such as Museo Larco) that tell the story of a country with a long history that produced a large number of coastal and Andean civilizations (such as the Moche, Chavin, and the Incas) and many local cultures. There are several archeological sites both within and around the city (locally known as huaca).

Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro are some of the nicest and safest areas in the city. Although they sometimes come a bit pricier than the old city center and other parts, some budget accommodation options do exist.

A lot to see in Lima such as :

The historic downtown, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Circuito Mágico del Agua (Magic Water Tour), a fountain and light display in the Parque de la Reserva and Parque Fermín Tangüis.

The Parque del Amor (Lovers' Park) in Miraflores.

The Costa Verde, Lima's impressive green coast stretches between San Miguel and Chorrillos.

The tourist-friendly districts of Barranco, Miraflores and Santiago de Surco.

The historical sites of Pueblo Libre, including the Cruz del Viajero, a monumental Christian cross dating from the era of the Conquistadores.

Lima's best shopping malls: Plaza Norte, Jockey Plaza, Larcomar, Mall Aventura Plaza, Real Plaza Salaverry.

Historical churches: Lima´s Cathedral, Santo Domingo (San Martín de Porres), Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa de Lima), Nazarenas (Señor de los Milagros), San Francisco.

Museums: Museo nacional de Arqueología, Antropología e Historia (Pueblo Libre), Museo de Arte (Paseo Colón), Museo Pedro de Osma (Barranco), Museo Rafael Larco (Pueblo Libre).

Parque Kennedy in the center of Miraflores. This park is right in the entertainment district and is famous for the large number of cats that used to live there.

( Lima - Peru ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Lima . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Lima - Peru

The Camino Video Diaries, fourth season: On the Via de la Plata, eighth part

From Alija del Infantado to Astorga. A nice way along castles, storks, frogs, and unexpected obstacles. In the middle of nowhere: happy to see yellow arrows. La Bañeza, and other pilgrims again. Even on the way, along with orchids. Astorga, the cathedral and the episcopal palace by Gaudi, the end of the way for this year. Say goodbye, the fog takes the view, or is it because of farewell tears?

Original version with English subtitles (available through the CC tool)

Tour Ubeda, Andalucía, Spain in 5 minutes!

We're in Úbeda, in the Jaén Provincia (province).
It is a Comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) of Andalusia in southern Spain.
Úbeda is about 10 km northeast of the city of Jaén.
Click on the upper right-hand corner link for my 5-min video on Jaen.

The Arabs occupied the city in 711 CE.

Ferdinand III of Castile reconquered it in 1234.

Ubeda is renowned for its architecture, particularly of the Renaissance period.

Most of Ubeda is a national monument, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site in 2003.

The church of Santa María de Los Reales Alcázares de Úbeda sits on a sacred place, built atop the remains of a mosque. The oldest parts of the church were built around 1259.

Enjoy the food of Ubeda.
In a well-watered olive-growing region, Úbeda produces olive oil and olive-pressing equipment.

This is the library of El Palacio Vela de los Cobos. This stately manor was designed in 1551. Our tour guide was the son of the owner of the palace. He's lived for decades in Houston, TX, but now that his dad is in his 90s, he plans to return to take care of the house.

The Holy Funerary Chapel of El Salvador del Mundo is a symbol of Úbeda, Jaén. It was designated a historic-artistic monument in 1931.

I've made over a dozen videos about Spain, including where I hiked across Spain twice, once on El Camino de Santiago and the 2nd time across the Pyrenees.

Oviedo: Saint Saviour Cathedral, pre-Romanesque jewels and other beauties
Portraits of Spanish Cities and Towns, 12

Oviedo is the capital of the Principality of Asturias, founded by two monks (at least according to the legend) at the foot of Mount Naranco fifty years before the Muslim invasion of the peninsula took place. Twelve centuries ago, Oviedo was the capital of the reconquered and Christian Spanish territory for a hundred years, before the court moved to Leon, later to Toledo and finally to Madrid.

From the time of the Asturian kings, when Charlemagne reigned over much of Europe a little bit more in the east, some beautiful pre-Romanesque monuments still remain there, including the churches San Miguel de Lillo and Santa Maria del Naranco (which before becoming a temple was the Aula Regia of a palace whose church was San Miguel). Today, the two churches belong to the World Heritage Sites of the UNESCO, along with other pre-Romanesque church, San Julian de los Prados, and the Gothic Saint Saviour Cathedral in the centre of Oviedo.

Some come to Oviedo to start there Primitivo Camino to Santiago de Compostela here, while others arrive here walking the Camino del Salvador (or the Northern Way), others come to see the pre-Romanesque churches on Mount Naranco, and some have just seen Vicky Cristina Barcelona by Woody Allen and want to see the place where the painter Juan Antonio brought the two young women. Anyway, Oviedo is a beautiful city worth visiting.

When I was there, Asturian folk dances were shown at the Escandalera Square with music from the Asturian bagpipes band. Some foreigners may be surprised because of the use of bagpipes in folk music - it is a holdover of the Celtic heritage.

The soundtrack includes a new song by The Supposed Mission.
