Barriletes Gigantes: I've never experienced anything like this before! | Sumpango, Guatemala

Hello Beautiful! I've seen a lot of things in many places, but THIS is a truly unique experience!!! Go to a Festival de Barriletes Gigantes (Giant Kite Festival) in Guatemala if you can in this lifetime. There is one in Sumpango and another in Santiago. The events and atmospheres are different, but the HANDMADE giant kites are equally impressive. These festivals take place every year on November 1st, Día de Todos Santos (All Saints' Day). You will NOT be disappointed and neither was I. Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up with my adventures!

Day of the Dead, Giant Kite Festival | Sumpango, Guatemala

[ Video shot and edited by Dan Perez Films ]
The magnificent Giant Kite Festival takes place every year on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Sumpango, Guatemala. The practice of flying kites during the Day of the Dead goes back several thousand years. It is believed that the kite (or barrilete) creates a connection of communication between the spirits of the dead and their families here on Earth.
In Sumpango, kite makers (barrileteros) work for months from after work to late in the evening to prepare the kites (some as large as 20 meters) for the festival, which takes place on November 1.
The kites resemble giant paintings, similar to a giant mural you would see in Miami's Wynwood Art District or the Bushwick Collective in New York. They are made, however, using layers of hand-cut, colored paper, the same type of thin paper used to line gift boxes(!). The kites are then folded up and taken to the festival where they are fastened to large bamboo poles for display or for flying. I traveled to Sumpango this year with my teenage daughter to capture a few images from this remarkable festival with my Lumix GH4.
Enjoy.

#Festival #BarriletesGigantes #Sumpango

El Festival de Barriletes Gigantes fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural de Guatemala.

ANTIGUA 2023 ???????? Guatemala Drone Aerial 4K | Sacatepéquez

Antigua is a colonial city in Guatemala, Central America which was founded by Spanish conquerers and Catholic missionaries in 1524. However, there are still remains of a Mayan city on the same location which was much older known as Kakchikel. Antigua is without doubt one of the nicest colonial cities built by the Spanish in Central America. Many churches and houses are built in Baroque style. Although 60,000 people lived in the 1700s. Nowadays 35,000 live in the city. Due to tourism many locals afford a living in the high mountains of Guatemala. There are many churches in the city. However the Santa Catalina Arch is one of the highlights of the city. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
