Lake Atitlan, Lago de Atitlan, is a must visit if you are traveling to Guatemala. There are many towns surrounding the lake but we chose to base ourselves in Panajachel and take a day trip over to San Juan la Laguna. In this Guatemala Travel Guide we are going to show you how to get to Lake Atitlan from Antigua, Guatemala and then show you a bit around Panajachel and San Juan la Laguna, two wonderful villages on Lake Atitlan. Magical Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Guide 4K
In this Lake Atitlan travel guide we explore 5 villages around the lake. Including Santiago De Atitlan, San Juan La Laguna, Santa Catarina, San Antonio Palopo and Panajachel. I would say this is the best place to visit in Guatemala because there are many villages to explore around the lake and culture to explore. But best of all is probably going to be the incredible natural beauty and scenery of the lake Atitlan.
There are a few towns around the lake also worth mentioning but we did not go. Such as San Marcos, which is popular with new age explorers, San Pedro La Laguna with foreign tourist and San Lucas for its proximity outside of the lake region to the Pacific Ocean. Our travel guide is from Santa Cruz La Laguna and says that one is the best. If you can get around to many of the towns and villages you will certainly feel culturally enriched and as if you really met the Mayan people.

we are in Guatemala on lake atitlan the town we are exploring is Santiago it is one of the les tourist towns on the lake so you get a good idea of the real life on the like for the locals. some things are not simple to find in the town so if you go make sure you know that also ou can only get to the town by boat for about 7 $ from Panajachel just go to the docks and ask around it is simple to find a boat ..Keep in mind the boats go very fast sometimes so if you are taking bags be carful and it can be hard on the neck and body be ready for it . it is an amazing place to see and explore as most of the people in the town are indigenous Maya and you can really feal it and see it . go and enjoy it
BEST Things to do in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala!
This travel vlog is about a weekend trip we took from Antigua, Guatemala to Lake Atitlan - which people in Guatemala call the most beautiful lake in the world. While a part of our itinerary was affected by rain, this vlog shows you an effective way to see the best parts of Lake Atitlan within a weekend
We made our way to visit three of the most popular towns in Lake Atitlan - San Marcos, San Pedro and Panajachel.
We started off with cliff jumping in San Marcos and then made our way to San Pedro on a boat. We had our accommodation in San Pedro. We found some very delicious restaurants in this town.
The next day, we hiked the Indian Nose (or Rostro Maya) with a tour company that charged us $10. This hike started at 4am and the whole trip lasted 4 hours (the hike was only 40 minutes up). This was one of those hikes that we will remember for a lifetime because of how beautiful the sunrise was over Lake Atitlan. This is a must visit for anyone coming to Lake Atitlan.
Next we were about to paddleboard in San Pedro but it started raining heavily so we just decided to make our way to Panajachel to check out the local markets. The markets of Panajachel weren't as special as we were expecting it to be.

It has a strong indigenous identity and the majority of the atitecos are Tz'utujil Maya. The town's cofradías maintain the syncretic traditions and rituals of Maya Catholicism.
We are leaving San Pedro La Laguna with a boat in the morning. We are passing Volcano San Pedro, Volcano Atitlan and Volcano Toliman on our way to Santiago Lake Atitlan.
Don't miss our Maximon Guatemala visit! Maximón, also called Rilaj Mam the great grandfather, is a Mayan deity and folk saint represented by a dressed up wooden effigy, who smokes cigarettes and drinks alcohol. Maximon Santiago Atitlan likes Quetzalteca, cigarettes, and money.
We also visit Concepcion Ramirez, also known as Doña Chonita. In 1959 her portrait was chosen to feature on the 25 centavo coin.
If you visit Santiago Atitlan in Guatemala you should go on the market days, Friday or Sunday. Santiago Atitlan market is a colourful market which is a must see!
We also explore the indoor market which is mainly a food market, also a must visit place in this amazing Lake Atitlan town.
La Iglesia Santiago Apóstol, Saint James the Apostle Church, is also worth a visit!
Santiago Atitlan has seen some of the worst events of the Guatemalan civil war. We visit a site of a massacre, Parque del La Paz, or Peace Park.

Lake Atitlan in Guatemala is known for its amazing natural scenery, Alexander von Humboldt called it the most beautiful lake in the world. Lake Atitlan is 130 square km large and 340 meters deep, it is a volcanic lake with 3 volcanoes on one side, surrounded by mountains and towns where Maya culture is still alive.

Por esta razón, decidí dirigirme hacia la aldea de San Antonio Chacayá, en Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, para descubrir lo que considero el lugar más hermoso de Latinoamérica: el Guatitlán Cabañas Lodge Restaurant. Este lugar está ubicado a orillas del Lago Atitlán y ofrece una vista incomparable del lago más bello del mundo. Aquí podrás disfrutar de caminatas, practicar diferentes deportes acuáticos y vivir una experiencia que vale la pena cada segundo.
En resumen, en este video les mostraré mi experiencia en el Guatitlán Cabañas Lodge Restaurant, un lugar mágico en el corazón de Guatemala. We visit Association of Medicinal Plants Mayab. A group of Tzutujil Maya women make high-quality products using medicinal plants.
If you are a chocolate lover you should visit Licor Marron Chocolate Factory They have cafe, chocolate shop, tours and workshop.
We also visit the local market in San Juan La Laguna Guatemala, the perfect place to buy some fruit and veggies.
Iglesia Católica de San Juan La Laguna is also worth a visit. The church is beautiful both inside and outside.
In this Guatemala guide we also show you that San Juan La Laguna Lake Atitlan is the place to visit if you want to do some shopping. You find beautiful weaving shops and workshops where you can buy beautiful textile and weaving products. Many of them are women’s cooperatives.

Guatemalan STREET FOOD from the GODS in Lake Atitlan | Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala
On my second day in Guatemala in partnership with the Real Intercontinental Guatemala we explored Santiago Atitlan the most important town on Lake Atitlan. Here we tried some of the best street food in Guatemala!

When we arrived in Santiago Atitlan we headed straight for Maya Patin a local street food on Lake Atitlan which is a small salted fish mixed with tomato paste in a banana leaf. It was salty and spicy, super delicious!
Next we continued up the town and we stop and had a spicy Guatemalan snow cone. It was a little spicy but the lime made it extra delicious!
We then visit Maximon, the Maya god or grandfather of Santiago Atitlan. The maya people of Santiago Atitlan believe that he protects the town. You can see him smoking cigarets and drinking! Pretty amazing experience!
To end our day in Santiago Atitlan we visited a local fish restaurant and ate some Black Bass. I had it with a white wine sauce and I also put some spicy sauce they had which was super spicy. Mariel challenged me and I won!
From there we crossed the lake back to Panajachel and drove 3 hours back to Guatemala City to the Real Intercontinental Guatemala. We had dinner at their Japanese restaurant Tanoshii. We went all out with three rolls of sushi, sashimi and sake!
