Welcome to the Italian Riviera! Also known as Liguria or the Ligurian Coast, this region of Italy stretches from France in the west to Tuscany in the east along the Mediterranean coast and is known for its idyllic fishing villages like Camogli, romantic resort towns like Portofino, and of course, delicious foods like pesto and focaccia – since they were created here! We had the pleasure of spending one full day exploring the beautiful coastline by bus, boat, and foot, and while one day is barely enough time to even scratch the surface of this incredible region, it was enough to let us know that we HAVE to come back!

We’re Matt & Nat, a part-time, non-remote travel couple based out of Nashville, TN.
We launched in 2021 by visiting all 50 US states & documented our entire journey on our Blog & here on YouTube! After spending a full year focused on such a defined goal, 2022 left us feeling a little lost & wondering What's next?. We continued traveling & creating vlogs but always with the What's next? question lingering. During one of our trips, we came across the book “1,000 Places to See Before You Die” & were immediately drawn in by it & knew that it had to be a part of our adventures. So, in January 2023 we officially launched our “1,000 Places To See Before You Die” series where we’ve set out to see as many of the “1,000 Places To See Before You Die”… before we die!

Borghi fantasma - I ruderi di Poggioreale (Trapani - Sicily - Italy)
Era il 14 gennaio del 1968, una giornata come tante a Poggioreale, ridente cittadina nella valle del Belìce.
Alle 13:28 la terra inizia a tremare...la gente barcollando si riversa in strada, cadono i primi cornicioni, le pareti delle case fatte di mattoni sovrapposti e sanza fondamenta, si feriscono.
Alle 14:15 un altra scossa, due ore e mezza dopo una terza scossa...poi una pausa e alle 2:33 di notte l'incubo continua piu forte di tutte le altre. La paura, il terrore scorreva nelle vene dei poggiorealesi...ma non era ancora finita...alle 03:01 arriva la più forte....magnitudo 6.4...di Poggioreale sparisce come se fosse stata cancellata.
I tetti cedettero, le pareti si aprirono come fossero di carta, quasi 300 esseri umani tra uomini, donne e bambini che decisero di non dormire al gelo, muoiono sotto il peso delle loro case, molti morirono mentre correvano per allontanarsi mentre tutto attorno crollava rovinosamente su di loro.
Tra quel maledetto 14 gennaio e 1 settembre del 1968 si registreranno 345 scosse di magnitudo superiore a 3!
Per quelle abitazioni fatte di tufo, risultato dell'arretratezza dell'entroterra siculo, non vi fù scampo e si sbriciolarono.
Chiese, scuole, municipio, caserme trasformati in rovine.
Il terremoto venne sottovalutato il 15 gennaio tanto che molti quotidiani andarono in stampa con titoli che parlavano di pochi feriti e danni lievi ad alcune case...ma Poggioreale, Gibellina, Salaparuta e Montevago...non esistevano piu!
I primi soccorsi trovarono le strade risucchiate dalla terra, un militare che sorvolò la valle riferì di uno scenario da bomba atomica, ho volato sull'inferno disse.
90.000 sfollati di tutta la valle vissero per mesi nelle tendopoli e poi per anni nelle baraccopoli. Nel 1973 i baraccati erano 48.182, nel 1976 erano ancora 47.000 e pensate che le ultime 250 baracche con i tetti in eternit furono smontate solo nel 2006!!! Questo poteva accadere solo in Sicilia.
Poggioreale non fu ricostruita dopo il terremoto ritenendo il suo ripristino antieconomico e potenzialmente pericoloso.
Il paese venne ricostruito alcuni chilometri più a valle, con strutture moderne e avveniristiche (per l'epoca)
L'ingresso al paese è vietato dal 1982 e capire il perchè è semplice...ogni edificio è pericolante ogni giorno di più, si sente il rumore dei calcinacci cadere ad ogni folata di vento, nel silenzio assordante si sentono le finestre divelte sbattere tra loro, il vento che si insinua tra le case ferite a morte emette un suono agghiacciante.
Vi è un associazione che, elmetto in testa, organizza delle guide nel paese...con loro sarete al sicuro.

PS: il nome della valle è Belìce con l'accento sulla i e non sulla e...i giornalisti e le tv ignorantemente pronunciavano allora il nome con l'accento sulla e pertanto ancora oggi molti sbagliano...ma voi non più...si chiama Valle del Belìce!
Arrivarci è abbastanza semplice anche se le strade in alcuni tratti sono ridotte male per non far dimenticare al visitatore che si trova pur sempre in Sicilia.
Da Palermo:
Scorrimento veloce “Palermo-Sciacca”, uscita Poggioreale, seguire le indicazioni per “Ruderi di Poggioreale”
Da Trapani:
Autostrada A29 “Palermo-Mazara del Vallo” (costruita con parte dei 6 miliardi di euro stanziati per il terremoto), uscita svincolo “Gallitello”, direzione scorrimento veloce “Palermo-Sciacca” uscita Poggioreale, seguire le indicazioni per “Ruderi di Poggioreale”.
La città con un solo vigile urbano si trova in Sicilia
