Santa Flavia: A Beautiful Seaside Village in Sicily with a Rich History
Santa Flavia is a beautiful seaside village located near Palermo, Sicily, which overlooks one of the most beautiful Gulfs in all of Sicily. This town has an indissoluble bond with the sea, dating back to its foundation as a Phoenician colony.
Near Santa Flavia is the archaeological site of Solunto, whose excavations began in 1825, during which the statue of Zeus was discovered. The ancient layout of the city along Mount Catalfano has been preserved and can be visited today. Structures such as the antiquarium, the tabernae, the gymnasium, and the House of Leda have been discovered, where Roman mosaics and majolica have been preserved.

Santa Flavia blickt auf eine bewegte Geschichte zurück. Bereits die Phönizier hatten hier eine Siedlung. Sie wurde von den Griechen zu einer veritablen Stadt ausgebaut - Solunto. Die Grundmauern dieser Stadt sind erhalten. Diese archäologische Ausgrabungsstätte steht mittlerweile zur Besichtigung zur Verfügung. Das heutige Santa Flavia ist, wie das benachbarte Bagheria, eine Stadt der Villen. Die reichen Bürger Palermos bauten sich hier einst große Sommersitze. Zu ihnen zählte die bekannte Architektenfamilie Basile.
Zur Kommune Santa Flavia gehören noch fünf kleinere Ortschaften. Porticello ist einer der größten Fischereihäfen Siziliens. Sant'Elia ist ein malerisches, ehemaliges Fischerdorf mit zwei Stränden. Solanto ist ein Flecken rund um eine alte Burg, die auf einem Felsen direkt am Meer liegt. Der Borgo di Santa Nicolicchia ist eine malerische Bucht, die Drehort von Agrodolce, Siziliens erster Seifenoper ist. Das Capo Zafferano ist eine kleine Siedlung, die auf einer Landzunge liegt. An ihrer Spitze befindet sich ein noch aktiver Leuchtturm, der ein schönes Wander-Ziel ist.

La frazione di Porticello del comune di Santa Flavia, da tempo immemorabile deve la sua economia all’attività di pesca ed al suo indotto. Da semplice sito di prelievo di arenaria necessaria per la costruzione dei palazzi nobiliari di un tempo, si è trasformata, via via, in luogo di residenza di una vitale piccola ma importante comunità di pescatori, che, di volta in volta, hanno saputo essere inventori di sistemi di pesca e scopritori di banchi di più efficace sfruttamento. La iniziale piccola comunità, cresciuta intorno all’attività di pesca dell’antica tonnara di Solanto – una delle più antiche tonnare fisse dell’isola-, si è evoluta nel tempo, affrontando, un po’ per necessità e un po’ per voglia di nuove esperienze imprenditoriali, anche il campo della prima conservazione e trasformazione del pescato.
