The Oaxaca They Don't Want You to See (Part 1)

We are in Oaxaca, Mexico in the El Centro area. We interact with several different local people and just take in the culture of the area. I am joined by my friend Billy who I met at my hostel called Iguana Hostel.

The local people of Oaxaca are some of the nicest Mexican people I have ever met. They are very warm and welcoming and make Oaxaca a one of a kind place. If you are traveling through Mexico, I highly suggest visiting Oaxaca.

map of Oaxaca [ State of Oaxaca ]

Oaxaca (English: /wəˈhækə/ wə-HA-kə, also US: /wɑːˈhɑːkɑː/ wah-HAH-kah, Spanish: [waˈxaka] (audio speaker iconlisten), from Classical Nahuatl: Huāxyacac [waːʃˈjakak] (audio speaker iconlisten)), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Oaxaca (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Oaxaca), is one of the 32 states that compose the Federative Entities of Mexico. It is divided into 570 municipalities, of which 418 (almost three quarters) are governed by the system of usos y costumbres (customs and traditions) with recognized local forms of self-governance. Its capital city is Oaxaca de Juárez.

Oaxaca is in southwestern Mexico.] It is bordered by the states of Guerrero to the west, Puebla to the northwest, Veracruz to the north, and Chiapas to the east. To the south, Oaxaca has a significant coastline on the Pacific Ocean.

The state is best known for its indigenous peoples and cultures. The most numerous and best known are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in México due to the state's rugged and isolating terrain. Most live in the Central Valleys region, which is also an economically important area for tourism, with people attracted for its archeological sites such as Monte Albán, and Mitla,[11] and its various native cultures and crafts. Another important tourist area is the coast, which has the major resort of Huatulco and sandy beaches of Puerto Escondido, Puerto Ángel, Zipolite, Bahia de Tembo, and Mazunte. Oaxaca is also one of the most biologically diverse states in Mexico, ranking in the top three, along with Chiapas and Veracruz, for numbers of reptiles, amphibians, mammals and plants. The mountains are mostly formed by the convergence of the Sierra Madre del Sur, the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca and the Sierra Atravesada into what is called the Oaxaca Complex (Complejo Oaxaqueño). The Sierra Madre del Sur runs along the coast with an average width of 150 km (93 mi) and a minimum height of 2,000 meters (6,562 ft) asl with peaks over 2,500 m (8,202 ft) asl. In various regions the chain is locally known by other names, such as the Sierra de Miahuatlán and the Sierra de la Garza. The Sierra Madre de Oaxaca enters the state from the Puebla and Veracruz borders in the Tuxtepec region, running northwest to southeast towards the Central Valleys region, then onto the Tehuantepec area. Local names for parts of this range include Sierra de Tamazulapan, Sierra de Nochixtlan, Sierra de Huautla, Sierra de Juárez, Sierra de Ixtlan and others. Average altitude is 2,500 m (8,202 ft) asl with peaks over 3,000 m (9,843 ft) asl and width averages at about 75 km (47 mi). The Sierra Atravesada is a prolongation of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. This range is not as high as the other two with an average elevation of just over 600 meters (1,969 ft). Most of it is located in the Juchitán district running east–west.[31]

The only valleys of any real size are the Central Valleys between Etla and Miahuatlán, which contains the city of Oaxaca. Smaller populated valleys include Nochixtlan, Nejapa, Cuicatlan and Tuxtepec. Small mesas contain population centers such as Putla, Juxtlahuaca, Tamazulapan, Zacatepec, Tlaxiaco and Huajuapan. The largest canyons in the state are those in the Cuicatlán area and include the Cortés, Galicia and María in the municipality of Tlaxiaco. There are a very large number of small canyons as well as ravines and arroyos of all sizes.

The mountainous terrain allows for no navigable rivers; instead, there are a large number of smaller ones, which often change name from area to area. The continental divide passes through the state, meaning that there is drainage towards both the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. Most of the drainage towards the Gulf is represented by the Papaloapan and Coatzacoalcos Rivers and their tributaries such as the Grande and Salado Rivers. Three rivers account for most of the water headed for the Pacific: the Mixteco, Atoyac and Tehuantepec Rivers with their tributaries.] Other important rivers and streams include the Tequisistlán, Santo Domingo, Putla, Minas, Puxmetacán-Trinidad, La Arena, Cajonos, Tenango, Tonto, Huamelula, San Antonio, Ayutla, Joquila, Copalita, Calapa, Colotepec, Aguacatenango-Jaltepec, Los Perros, El Corte, Espíritu Santo, Sarabia, Ostuta, Petapa and Petlapa.

Tule Tree | The Worlds Widest Tree | Santa Maria del Tule | Oaxaca | English | Subtitles | Mexico

In this video I am visiting the town of Santa Maria del Tule, to see the widest tree in the world - the Tue Tree. This is a great additional to any trips to Mexico you may have planned.

This tree is amazing. Before seeing the tree I decided to explore the town, which was super pretty and well maintained. You can tell this is a tourist place.

If you are looking for a unique place to visit during your Mexico holiday, why not check out one of the biggest trees in the world. It may not be the tallest tree in the world, but it is one of the oldest, and the widest tree in the world.

Who would have thought one of the largest trees was found in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Please note, this video is in English, not Spanish but I do have subtitles. There are English Subtitles, French Subtitles and Spanish Subtitles.

El Árbol del Tule in Santa María del Tule in the Mexican state of Oaxaca,

Beautiful places to travel to game : 100
El Árbol del Tule (Spanish for The Tree of Tule) is a tree located in the church grounds in the town center of Santa María del Tule in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, approximately 9 km (6 mi) east of the city of Oaxaca on the road to Mitla. It is a Montezuma cypress (Taxodium mucronatum), or ahuehuete (meaning old man of the water in Nahuatl). It has the stoutest trunk of any tree in the world. In 2001 it was placDimensions and age[edit]
In 2005, its trunk had a circumference of 42.0 m (137.8 ft), equating to a diameter of 14.05 m (46.1 ft),[2] a slight increase from a measurement of 11.42 m (37.5 ft) m in 1982.[3] However, the trunk is heavily buttressed, giving a higher diameter reading than the true cross-sectional of the trunk represents; when this is taken into account, the diameter of the 'smoothed out' trunk is 9.38 m (30.8 ft).[2] This is still slightly larger than the next most stout tree known, a Giant Sequoia with a 8.98 m (29.5 ft) diameter.[4]
The height is difficult to measure due to the very broad crown; the 2005 measurement, made by laser, is 35.4 m (116 ft),[2] shorter than previous measurements of 41–43 m (135–141 ft).[3] According to the signboard by the tree (see gallery, below), it has a total volume of 816.829 m3 and a weight of 636.107 t (701.188 short tons); these figures are however not independently verified, and given the same signboard's claim of a girth of 58 m (190 ft), must be treated with suspicion.
It is so large that it was originally thought to be multiple trees, but DNA tests have proven that it is only one tree.[5] This does not rule out another hypothesis, which states that it comprises multiple trunks from a single individual.[6]
The age is unknown, with estimates ranging between 1,200 and 3,000 years, and even one claim of 6,000 years;[6][7] the best scientific estimate based on growth rates is 1,433-1,600 years.[8] Local Zapotec legend holds that it was planted about 1,400 years ago by Pecocha, a priest of Ehecatl, the Aztec wind god, in broad agreement with the scientific estimate; its location on a sacred site (later taken over by the Roman Catholic Church) would also support this.[6][7]
The tree is occasionally nicknamed the Tree of Life from the images of animals that are reputedly visible in the tree's gnarled trunk. As part of an official project local schoolchildren give tourists a tour of the tree and point out shapes of creatures on the trunk, including jaguars and elephants.[citation needed]
Slowly dying[edit]
In 1990, it was reported that the tree is slowly dying because its roots have been damaged by water ed on a UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage Sites.[1]

Xoxocotlán & Arrazola [Oaxaca, México] (2021)

Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán is a small city and municipality located 5 km from the state capital of Oaxaca in the south of Mexico. It is part of the Centro District in the Valles Centrales region.

Day of the Dead altars are set up starting on 30 October and Mexican marigold petals are laid from these altars, through the entrances of houses out to the street. Many altars here are decorated with many of the same items that were used on ancient Zapotec tombs of Monte Albán. Most of these altars have three levels, referring to heaven, purgatory and hell but sometimes with seven, reflecting the Zapotec cosmos. From this point until 2 November, nothing on the altar may be touched as to not anger the visiting dead. On the nights of 31 October and 1 November, vigils are held in cemeteries in the municipality, especially the cemeteries of Mictlancihuatl and San Sebastian Martir. Those who have loved ones buried in the local cemeteries decorate the tombs with flower petals, candles, ceramic skulls and other items and maintain nightly vigils from about 5 or 6 in the evening until the next morning, with food and drink to sustain them. Prayers are traditionally said at about 11pm until about 3, so that the dead may return to the beyond in peace.

Arrazola, beautiful place to visit, there are some places where the artisan actually carves the wood for your pieces. Alebrije as the perfect souvenir for the experience, many different styles and options to chose when you walk on the streets of Arrazola.

The museum of alebrijes its a must, there you can see the evolution of the traditional wood carving and the change on the designs on colorful mixes.

Thanks for watching!

4K version of the video made due to Instagram & X (pka Twitter) current limitations.

The real/full montage will come in #2weeks ????

Today we went for breakfast at Chepiche & then after leaving Mawly at the house ????, we headed to Monte Alban to visit the Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán.

It was truly breathtaking and imho better than Teotihuacán pyramids, highly recommend to get there if you got the opportunity.
Unfortunately, arriving late made us missed a part of it but being the last one on site gave me the opportunity for a couple of great videos with barely anybody around.

Monte Albán is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán Municipality in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca (17.043° N, 96.767°W). The site is located on a low mountainous range rising above the plain in the central section of the Valley of Oaxaca, where the latter's northern Etla, eastern Tlacolula, and southern Zimatlán and Ocotlán (or Valle Grande) branches meet. The present-day state capital Oaxaca City is located approximately 9 km (6 mi) east of Monte Albán. (source Wokipedia)
