The birth of the first settlement on today's Arpinian territory can be traced back to the Volsci. However, dating is difficult. Some scholars fix its birth around the 7th-6th century. BC, others, however, around the middle of the 4th century. B.C. Beyond Arpino there are several cities founded in the Ciociaria area by this ancient population.
That of the Volsci was a population that lived above all on agriculture and pastoralism, but it was also very warlike. The wars with Rome are proof of this. The choice to build the first settlement on such high ground was due to defensive objectives. In fact, that of the Volsci was not the only population in central Italy and Marsi and Sanniti were among the most dangerous. It is for this reason that huge cyclopean (or polygonal) walls were erected to defend what would become Civitavecchia di Arpino, still visible today.

The walls of the Acropolis of Arpino are made up of large irregularly shaped boulders wedged together without foundations. About half of the original total of 3 km in length is still visible today. Probably the fact that the inhabited center has developed in part far from the walls has allowed its conservation. Over the centuries, the settlement has undergone changes: one of these was the construction of the square-based tower that stands out over the neighboring area. Its function was defensive and is known as 'Cicero's Tower'. It seems, in fact, that the famous orator's family lived inside the acropolis.

Civitavecchia (pronounced [ˌtʃivitaˈvɛkkja]; meaning ancient town) is a city and comune of the Metropolitan City of Rome in the central Italian region of Lazio. A sea port on the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is located 60 kilometres (37 miles) west-north-west of the center of Rome.

Avellino is a town and comune, capital of the province of Avellino in the Campania region of southern Italy. It is situated in a plain surrounded by mountains 50 kilometres (31 mi) northeast of Naples and is an important hub on the road from Salerno to Benevento. Before the Roman conquest, the ancient Abellinum was a centre of the Samnite Hirpini, located on the Civita hill some 4 kilometres (2 mi) outside the current town, in what is now Atripalda.

The city could correspond to the ancient Velecha, documented by coins found in the area. Abellinum was conquered by the Romans in 293 BC, changing name several times in the following centuries (Veneria, Livia, Augusta, Alexandriana, and Abellinatium). However, the edification of a true Roman town occurred only after the conquest by Lucius Cornelius Sulla in 89 BC.

The town was Christianized around 500 AD, becoming an episcopal seat. There followed the invasions of the Goths and Vandals. After the Lombard conquest of southern Italy, the ancient city was abandoned (it is disputed if completely or partly), and a new settlement grew on the Terra hill, corresponding to the modern Avellino. Defended by a castle, it became part of the Duchy (later Principality) of Benevento and, after the latter's fall, of the Principality of Salerno. In 1820 Avellino was seat of revolutionary riots. However, the Unification of Italy some fifty years later did not bring any benefit to the city, being cut off from the main railway line Naples-Benevento-Foggia, and far from the sea as well.

The 1980 Irpinia earthquake represented a turning point for the town and for the entire province of Avellino. Large amounts of money flowed in for infrastructure investment, and the extra money generated innovation and economic expansion more generally. By 2008 a per capita annual income level of €20,180 placed Avellino well above the regional average in terms of individual prosperity.

The station, located where the city limits of Avellino meet Atripalda, was once the terminus for passenger rail services to Benevento, Cancello, and Rocchetta Sant'Antonio. Avellino is served by two access points (Avellino Est/East and Avellino Ovest/West) on the A16 Autostrada (originally numbered A17, and known also as Autostrada of the two seas) which runs approximately west–east and links Naples to the west with Canosa and Bari on the farther side of the country.

Some ruins (mostly foundings) of the ancient Abellinum can be seen near the modern village of Atripalda, 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) east of modern Avellino. They include the forum, faced by some temples, baths, parts of the Serino aqueduct and a patrician domus. There was also an amphitheatre and a brothel. Avellino Cathedral, with its Romanesque crypt, stands on the site of a rich Roman villa which was built around 129 BC and abandoned after the eruption of Vesuvius, and an earthquake in 346 AD. The church and convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie were built in 1580. There are some remains of the Lombard castle in Piazza Castello (Castle Square). Because the castle was built at the base of a small valley, its tactical purpose continues to puzzle modern-day historians throughout Europe. The Fountain of Bellerophon was executed in the 17th century by Cosimo Fanzago.

Built around the 8th century BC, it was the ancient Varcenum of the Ernici people, strategically important, even in Roman times and has always been known as a place rich in waters.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire to avoid the incursions of the Lombards first and the Saracens then it fortified and erected around the inhabited nucleus numerous sighting and signaling towers, still visible today.

In the Middle Ages it was under the papal state as a Free Municipality. It had considerable importance during the pontificate of the Anagnini Pontiffs, Gregory IX and Boniface VIII.

Da Isola del Liri a Arpino - di Sergio Colombini

Isola del Liri (Lisëra in dialetto locale) è un comune italiano di 11 516 abitanti della provincia di Frosinone nel Lazio.
La Cascata Grande è formata dal braccio di sinistra del fiume, ed è alta circa 27 metri: una delle poche cascate a trovarsi nel centro storico di una città. La cascata del Valcatoio, formata dal braccio di destra del fiume, è meno spettacolare della prima anche perché le sue acque sono irregimentate e captate per alimentare un impianto di produzione elettrica. Il suo salto non è perfettamente verticale, ma segue un piano inclinato di circa 160 metri lungo un dislivello di circa 27 metri con una pendenza del 17% circa.

L'Acropoli di Civitavecchia di Arpino è un sito archeologico prossimo al centro abitato di Arpino, uno dei più importanti per la conoscenza dell'architettura megalitica del Lazio meridionale, non solo per la grande estensione delle mura ma anche per la loro vetustà, maggiore di quella di altri siti (collocabile secondo alcuni in piena età del ferro, VIII/VII secolo a.C.), e classificabili secondo la scala ideata da Giuseppe Lugli nella seconda maniera.
La civitas vetus della città rappresenta una delle cinte murarie meglio conservate costruite in opera poligonale in epoca preromana. Di particolare significatività è la presenza di un arco a sesto acuto unico sopravvissuto nel suo genere in tutta l'area mediterranea.
Trattasi di un tipico arco a mensola, che viene a costituire una porta cosiddetta scea.
Le porte scee (famose quelle dell'antica Troia) sono varchi nelle cinte murarie che non si aprono frontalmente, bensì di lato, e precisamente in lato sinistro (scaevus, in latino sinistro) su una muraglia sghemba; in tal modo, per entrare nella città fortificata si doveva esporre agli abitanti il lato destro del corpo, che in caso di guerra e in caso di soldati attaccanti era quello sguarnito dalla difesa dello scudo (il quale veniva tenuto con la mano sinistra, mentre l'arma veniva tenuta con la mano destra).
Gli abitanti godevano pertanto del sostanziale vantaggio di poter respingere un potenziale attacco nemico, colpendo il nemico nel lato sguarnito da difesa, quello destro.

Non si conosce l'esatta età della fondazione di Arpino, anche se ritrovamenti archeologici[senza fonte] ne dimostrano le origini volsche, popolo di origini incerte (probabilmente gli antichi greci, fatto confermato dalla presenza di numerose famiglie che portano il cognome Greco) a cui sono connesse le vicende dei rostri del foro (preda romana dopo la battaglia navale al largo di Anzio) e di Coriolano.
Le tradizioni locali, e una serie di iscrizioni ancora visibili, fanno risalire la fondazione della città al dio Saturno o ai Pelasgi, analogamente alle altre città del Lazio meridionale cinte da possenti mura megalitiche e dette città saturnie.
Tale tradizione di fondazione, unitamente alla fierezza per i tanti figli illustri che hanno contribuito alla crescita e alla grandezza di Roma antica, è scolpita in una orgogliosa lapide in lingua latina posta sulla porta medievale di ingresso da est ad Arpino, detta Porta Napoli; la traduzione italiana suona così: O VIANDANTE, STAI ENTRANDO IN ARPINO, FONDATA DA SATURNO, CITTA' DEI VOLSCI, MUNICIPIO DEI ROMANI, PATRIA DI MARCO TULLIO CICERONE PRINCIPE DELL'ELOQUENZA E DI CAIO MARIO SETTE VOLTE CONSOLE. L'AQUILA TRIONFALE, PRESO IL VOLO DA QUI ALL'IMPERO, SOTTOMISE A ROMA TUTTO IL MONDO. RICONOSCI IL SUO PRESTIGIO, E VIVI IN SALUTE.
L'aquila trionfale di cui parla l'iscrizione, la quale spicca il volo hinc ad imperium, è celebrata in una grande fontana monumentale in pietra calcarea, situata nel cuore della città in largo Angelo Conti, all'incrocio tra via del Liceo, via Caio Mario e via Civita Falconara (e a pochi metri dalla perduta porta di Civita delle mura megalitiche, oggi inglobate nei palazzi adiacenti), risalente probabilmente alla seconda metà del XVII secolo.
