Things to see in the Province of Messina, Sicily, Italy

On this episode of You, Me and Sicily we take you around the Province of Messina. First stop is Giardini Naxos which the Greeks first inhabited in 734 BC. They soon made their way up to Taormina, here at every corner there is something to marvel at. We also stopped at one of our favorite places to stop for a snack and to listen to music. Next we go to Savoca and Forza d'Agro, two towns made famous by the Godfather movies but we like to go there because of the quaint cobblestone streets, art and panoramic views.
Next we head to Milazzo and the spectacular castle.
In Sant'Agata di Militello there is another castle with over 400 artifacts collected from the area.
In Tindari there is the Black Madonna. Legend has it she was brought here from Constantinople. During a storm the sailors gave the statue of the Black Madonna to the abbey for safekeeping.
The capital of the Province of Messina is the city of Messina . The bell tower of the main cathedral in Messina contains the biggest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world. We will have much more on a future episode.

Sicily, Italy | Catania Cathedral (Duomo di Catania / Cattedrale di Sant'Agata)

Sicily, Italy | Catania Cathedral (Duomo di Catania / Cattedrale di Sant'Agata)
Catania Cathedral (Duomo di Catania), dedicated to Saint Agatha (Cattedrale di Sant'Agata), the patron saint of Catania, was built between 1078-1093. Due to lots of earthquakes and Volcano Etna’s eruptions, the Norman Cathedral has been destroyed several times. After a violent earthquake in 1693, the façade was redesigned by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini in Baroque style. The Cathedral is a majestic masterpiece known for the incredible colours due to the mix of stone and black lava. The façade with three levels with Corinthian columns in granite is decorated with marble statues of Saint Agatha over the gate, Saint Euplius on the right and Saint Birillus on the left. The main door is in wood and has 32 sculpted plaques with episodes of the life and martyrdom of Saint Agatha, papal coats of arms and symbols of Christianity. The Cathedral hosts the tomb of the Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini and the graves of the Aragonese Kings.
Catania is the second largest city in Sicily, Italy, after Palermo. It is an important industrial and transportation centre, connected by rail with Palermo, Messina, and Syracuse. It is the main airport in Sicily, fifth in Italy, and one of the busiest ports in Italy. Catania is located on Sicily's east coast, facing the Ionian Sea, south of the active volcano, Mount Etna. The city was founded in 729 BC by Chalcidian Greeks and passed by multiple geologic catastrophes. In 1169, the city was almost completely destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake. A major eruption of the volcano, Mount Etna, in 1669, made the city almost swamped by the lava. In 1693, Catania suffered a great destruction caused by an earthquake. Located on the Ionian seacoast, Catania is well-known for its fine beaches nearby. Its location at the base of the Mount Etna, makes the city a popular winter resort.
Catania's historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site and known for its many beautiful Baroque buildings, including the Cathedral of Saint Agatha (Duomo di Catania). Located nearby the enormous Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe, Catania is also known as “the black city” due to the colour of its buildings, blackened by the soot and ashes of the volcano eruptions. Despite the fact that the city was damaged many times by the volcano eruptions, Catania was rebuilt and became a more beautiful city with an interesting historical center and a unique atmosphere. Piazza del Duomo with the Cathedral and the Fountain of the Elephant is the central point for the most important tourist attractions in Catania.

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy )

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy )

Catania is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano with trails leading up to the summit. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants.

For all the noise, chaos and scruffiness that hit the visitor at first glance, Catania has a strong magnetic pull. This is Sicily at its most youthful, a city packed with cool and gritty bars, abundant energy and an earthy spirit in sharp contrast to Palermo’s aristocratic airs. Catania’s historic core is a Unesco-listed wonder, where black-and-white palazzi tower over sweeping baroque piazzas. One minute you’re scanning the skyline from a dizzying dome, the next contemporary art in an 18th-century convent. Beneath it all are the ancient ruins of a town with over 2700 candles on its birthday cake. Indeed, food is another local forte. This is the home of Sicily's iconic pasta alla Norma and the extraordinary La Pescheria market.

Catania is well known for its historical earthquakes, having been destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes in 1169 and 1693, and for several volcanic eruptions from the neighbouring Mount Etna, the most violent of which was in 1669. Catania has had a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. In 1434, the first university in Sicily was founded in the city. In the 14th century and into the Renaissance period, Catania was one of Italy's most important cultural, artistic and political centres. The city has a rich culture and history, hosting many museums, restaurants, churches, parks and theatres. Catania is well known for its street food.

Catania is located on the east coast of the island of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna. As observed by Strabo, the location of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna has been both a curse and a blessing. On the one hand, violent outbursts of the volcano throughout history have destroyed large parts of the city, whilst on the other hand the volcanic ashes yield fertile soil, especially suited for the growth of vines.

Ancient edifices include:

Greek-Roman Theatre of Catania (2nd century)
Odeon (3rd century). It could house up to 1500 spectators
Amphitheatre
Greek Acropolis of Montevergine
Roman Aqueduct
Roman Forum
Roman broken arcades
Christian basilicas, hypogea, burial monuments and Catacombs

Terme di Santa Maria Odigitria
Terme della Rotonda
Baths of the Four Quoins
Terme di Palazzo Asmundo
Terme del Palazzo dell’Università
Terme di Casa Gagliano

Other monuments :

Castello Ursino, built by emperor Frederick II in the 13th century.
Palazzo degli Elefanti, designed by Giovan Battista Vaccarini. It houses the Town Hall.
Palazzo Biscari
Palazzo Tezzano
Uzeda Gate
The Medieval Gothic-Catalan Arch of Saint John of Friars (San Giovanni de' Fleres)
Ferdinandean Gate or Garibaldi Gate (Porta Ferdinandea or Porta Garibaldi), a triumphal arch erected in 1768 to celebrate the marriage of Ferdinand I of Two Sicilies and Marie Caroline of Austria

The House of the Mutilated of War (Casa del Mutilato) built in Fascist-style architecture
Catania War Cemetery, a Commonwealth Graveyard located in the southern country hamlet of Bicocca

The Baroque city centre of Catania is a UNESCO World Heritage Site:

The Cathedral (1070–1093, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake)
Saint Agatha Abbey (1620)
Saint Placidus (1769)
Church of San Giuseppe al Duomo
Church of Santissimo Sacramento al Duomo
Church of San Martino dei Bianchi
Church of Sant'Agata la Vetere (254)

S1 - E21 - Sicily Vlog - Catania city center tour

We are going southwards! The first time in my Vlogs I'm documenting the most southern region of Italy and the biggest island in the Mediterranean sea: Sicily. Our tour starts at the foot of the mount Etna volcano in the city of Catania. In the past the city suffered big damages caused by two big earthquakes and several eruptions from the mount Etna. Only thanks to the big efforts of the inhabitants you can still see the preserved baroque palaces since they have always rebuilt their loved city with the spat out lava stone. See in this episode:

- Old city center of Catania
- Cattedrale di Sant'Agata (Catania's cathedral
- Fontana dell'Elephante (Fountain of the elephant)
- Teatro Massimo Bellini (opera house)
- Anfiteatro Romano di Catania (Amphitheatre)
- Mercato di piazza Carlo Alberto
- Local cuisine with Cannolo Siciliano, Ravioli alla Ricotta, Seltz Limone and Mandarino al Limone
