Music We Use:
St Andra, Austria
Sankt Andrä, a town of some 11,000 people in the Lavant Valley of Carinthia is probably best known for its basilica - quite a small town for such an important church! You can see in the film where I am parked - this parking is legal but I don't think that the town would want to encourage too many motorhome users to leave their vehicles there at once! Unfortunately there is no local campsite. You can also see in the photograph the tourist information office where in my case the service was really excellent. It is rare to be served by someone as keen to explain what can be seen in the area.
I came to the town by following the Austrian route 70 from Völkermarkt to Wolfsberg. The route is an ancient one crossing the Alps, nearby the Romans mined marble and a thousand years later clay was also mined. The route 70 is relatively easy whilst coming from the west and travelling east, if one approaches from the east then the road can be quite winding and steep and could pose a challenge for motorhomers of a more nervous disposition with large vehicles. In that case the motorway is available.

In 1440 Vienna became the resident city of the Habsburg dynasty. It eventually grew to become the de facto capital of the Holy Roman Empire (800–1806) in 1437 and a cultural centre for arts and science, music and fine cuisine. Hungary occupied the city between 1485 and 1490.
In the 16th and 17th centuries Christian forces stopped Ottoman armies twice outside Vienna (see Siege of Vienna, 1529 and Battle of Vienna, 1683). A plague epidemic ravaged Vienna in 1679, killing nearly a third of its population.

Castles and Lakes: Along Austria's summits and traditions | The Alps from above (2/10)
From the Styrian capital Graz with its unique architecture the series’ second episode starts off. Roofer Barbara Rockenbauer maintains the historic roofs in the old town. Just outside of Graz a man fights the forces of nature: the so called “hail-bomber” Walter Golob. With his plane he flies directly into thunder clouds and sprays silver iodide, so that the hail goes down as rain instead. Like this, he protects the wine and fruit farmers’ harvest.
The route follows over the alpine pastures of Castle Piber. The stallions of Vienna’s Spanish Riding School spend their youth here. The journey takes us further to National Park Gesaeuse, where a diver explores and charts the caves of the area. The destination of the trip are the lakes of the Aussee region, the Styrian part of Salzkammergut. Here canyoning athletes hike through deep crevices and waterfalls. On Lake Grundlsee, people cross the waters on boats that resemble the gondolas of Venice. Erhard Amon still knows how to build these boats.
