Sanica is a river in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It springs from a strong spring at the northeastern foot of the Grmeč mountain and below the peak of Lisina (913 m), near the town of Gornja Sanica and flows into the Sana river. It is 22 km long, and its catchment area is 211 km². Its valley is narrow. It is rich in fish (trout, grayling, pike). It passes through cuts and canyons, which gives it purity and clarity so that it can be drunk. Excellent for fishing and tourism. There are no major pollutants that affect its flow and water quality. A water supply system was built at the source leading to Bosanski Petrovac. The water temperature at the source is around 7°C.

At the very source are the remains of the former sawmill and mills. It often pours out of the bed in the spring after the melting of the snow from Grmeč and during the spring rains and the mostly uninhabited part of the valley is blue.

The mouth of the San is downstream from the Vrhpolje railway station.

Bosnia & Herzegovina: Across Sarajevo, Konjic & Mostar

This is a bit of an unusual destination, but we recently travelled to the Balkans to Bosnia & Herzegovina. This was after a wild transit detour taking up an entire day from Kuala Lumpur to Doha to Istanbul before finally making it to Sarajevo due to flight departure delays in KLIA.

Bosnia's a beautiful and scenic but once war-torn country, having seen both the beginning of World War I as well as, more recently, the Bosnian War in the early 90's which broke up former Yugoslavia. As a result, many buildings particularly along the north bank of the Miljacka River running through Sarajevo remain scarred with bullet holes from small arms fire, while numerous areas are marked for still active landmines far outside the cities.

If you're interested in travelling to Europe without the weight of the Euro bearing down on our wallets, this is a fantastic destination that's rich in history and culture - with plenty of heart. With about half its population being Muslim, halal food will be an easy find for Muslim travellers.

Bosnia-Herzegovina - Home to Europe's last living rivers

Did you know?

„People care about the rainforest and the oceans, but hardly about rivers, yet they are the most threatened ecological asset worldwide.
The only remaining crystal-clear wild mountain streams and rivers that are alive are in the Balkans.
The Balkans, especially Bosnia-Herzegovina, are an exception. In this country, the overall nature is so intact that it is something extraordinary - even in the Balkans.“
Ulrich Eichelmann, CEO Riverwatch

But now, the rivers of the Balkans are in danger.

With support of Audi AG Germany and Porsche/Audi Bosnia-Herzegovina I travelled to the beautiful rivers of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

All facts (English/German) are published in the European magazine Danube Connects now, which will be available in 17 European countries.

Bosnien Herzegowina, Mostar, Camping Wimbledon und der Fluss Buna

Der Campingplatz Mali Wimbledon ist wirklich schön. Alles da was man braucht.

NERETVA DOCUMENTARY 2022

About the River
The Neretva River is the largest river of the eastern part of the Adriatic basin which stretches for 220 km in Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the last 20 km in Croatia. Neretva River flows through valley, surrounded by mountains: to the north Bitovnja (1700 m above sea level) and Vranica (2112 m asl), south side of the limit of the mountain (2103 m asl) and Čvrsnica (2226 m asl), while in the west is Bjelasnica (2062 m asl).

It is extremely rich in water and in natural resources with many endemic and fragile life forms which are threatened and often exploited in an unsustainable manner, thus endangering landscapes, habitats and biodiversity. It is still recognized for its natural beauty and diversity of its landscapes and contains the significant portion of fresh drinking water. The main present and potential pressures are: existing and planned hydropower utilization, gravel and sand extraction, river regulation resulting from the use of floodplains for agriculture and settlements, navigation, water use for irrigation, inappropriate management of fisheries etc.

Geographically and hierologically the Neretva is divided into three sections. The first section of the Neretva courses from its source all the way to the town of Konjic; the Upper Neretva (Bosnian: Gornja Neretva), The second section begins from the confluence of the Neretva and the Rama River between Konjic and Jablanica where the Neretva suddenly takes a southern course. From Jablanica, the Neretva enters the largest canyons of its course, running through steep slopes of magnificent mountains of Prenj, Čvrsnica and Čabulja reaching 800–1200 m in depth. When the Neretva expands for the second and final time, it reaches the third section of its course. Often called the Bosnian and Herzegovinian California, the valley of the downstream Neretva indeed is a true “Golden State” of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The last 30 km of the Neretva's stream form an alluvial delta, before the river empties into the Adriatic Sea.

Interesting facts:

There are two recognized Ramsar sites on Neretva river; one is Hutovo blato wetland in B&H, and the other is Neretva Delta in Croatia,
It is believed that the name Neretva has its origins in the Illyrian language and is a result of Illyrian NERA-ETWA meaning heavenly water (Heavenly river),
The Neretva River was a battlefield during the Battle of Neretva, one of the most famous battles during World War Two in the European southeast. The battle has also been known by its names the Fourth Enemy Offensive and the Battle for the Wounded. In order to save over 4,000 wounded, the partisans destroyed 4 bridges on the Neretva River. The destroyed bridge, as a symbol of the battle, still exists and there is also a museum located nearby,
In the Neretva River, one of the most endemic fish in the world was caught just by accident, northern lampreys (Petromyzontidae), which is on the red list of the most endemic world fish species
