BERGEN, NORWAY | Best Things To Do In & Around Bergen
The city of Bergen is located along the southwestern coast of Norway. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, it’s a haven for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. But as a UNESCO World Heritage City, Bergen also combines history, culture, and an interesting urban life. This charming city might have a small-town feel, but it has tons of entertaining activities to offer. In this video, we break down our 6 favorite things to do in and around Bergen.

6. Try the local food
Norwegian culture is highly influenced by fishing and this is also visible in their cuisine. Visit Bergen’s fish market at the waterfront and you’ll see merchants selling their fresh catch of the day as they have for centuries. Other dishes Norwegians are proud of is “boller” (sweet buns) and “Pølse” (Norwegian hot dogs).
5. Visit a museum on a rainy day
Bergen has many interesting museums that you can visit, such as the Norway Fisheries Museum, the Lepra museum, and the Bergen University Museum of Natural History.

4. Day hike to highest peak in Bergen municipality
Sitting between various mountains, Bergen naturally has plenty of great hiking terrain. At 987 meters tall, Gullfjellet is the highest peak in Bergen municipality and a classic for local hikers. Located a bit outside the city, this trail feels truly remote and is a great escape. The trail starts at Osavatnet and runs past a cabin (Redningshytten) on the way to the summit. To get to the trailhead, it’s best to rent a car or combine public transportation with a taxi ride.
3. Bryggen & the Hanseatic Museum
Bryggen is one of Bergen's most iconic and popular attractions. With its vibrant atmosphere, you will find plenty of things to do. You can stroll through the narrow, crooked alleyways, grab a local beer at one of the many cafés, and learn about its historic importance at the Hanseatic Museum. A free guided tour is included when visiting the museum, during which you get to know more about the Hanseatic merchants and their daily life at Bryggen.

2. Hike one of the 7 peaks
Bergen is surrounded by seven peaks, and you can hike them all! The most popular ones are Mount Fløyen and Mount Ulriken, which are easily accessible by foot or bus from the city center. Both are short but steep hikes of a few kilometers each, offering spectacular views of the city, the fjord, and the ocean from the top. There is a cable car to Ulriken and a railway to Fløyen if you don't want to hike.

Norway is known for its fjords, and so is Bergen. If this is your first time in Norway, make sure to go on a day tour of the fjords. Bergen offers a wide variety of guided tours, with Mostraumen being the most popular and accessible one. During a 3 hour cruise, you will see the varied western Norway fjord landscapes, consisting of steep cliffs and waterfalls. You eventually reach the Mostraumen Strait and the tiny village of Mo!

Jest ono położone kilka kilometrów od popularnego lotniska Oslo-Torp na które latają tanie linie lotnicze. Lotów jest tak dużo, że można zaplanować podróż z kilku miast w Polsce i wylecieć od rana a wrócić wieczorem (bez nocowania w Norwegii).

Vesterøya in Sandefjord, Norway
Vesterøya (West Island) is one of two peninsulas in Sandefjord kommune in Norway. Vesterøya is known for its many beaches and idyllic costal landscape, but there are also many trails used for hiking and biking.
Vesterøya was once submerged in water. That was during the Viking age, ocean water levels were 3–4 meters higher than today. Vesterøya was therefore an island surrounded by waters, but became a peninsula as water levels decreased. Vesterøya was previously known as Velløy, which derives from Vadill-øy.
West Island lies between the Sandefjordsfjord and Mefjord, south-east of the city center. The landscape is dominated by hills, mountains, forests, beaches, sloping rocks, and farm fields. The peninsula has a length of 10 kilometers. It is home to a large number of vacation homes, beaches, campgrounds, and recreational areas.
Folehavna Fort contains ruins from a German fortress erected in 1941.

Sandefjord Museum is a MUST-SEE! ????
The adventure continues on Day 2 as we began our Southern Norway road trip. Our first stop was the Sandefjord Museum (Sandefjordmuseene), also known as the Whaling Museum.
It is truly a hidden pearl as the museum showcases the entire Norwegian history of whaling. In fact, it is the only museum in Europe that is dedicated to whaling and all its history.
In the Sandefjord museum, it features a wide range of birds and animals exhibits from the Antarctic and Artic regions. However, the main attractions has to be this full-sized replica of a blue whale that hangs right above the ceiling in the museum, and the skeleton exhibits of various whale breeds at the basement.
We continued our route and ended off at Kristiansand - which was the pitstop for this leg of the road trip. It is the 5th largest city in Norway, but unfortunately we didn't spend much time exploring most parts of the city.
However, we did take a long stroll to the central part of the city for dinner. Had a really good feel of the local community and lifestyle, and it's perhaps the perfect setting to end off a long day of driving.
