On the road between Camagüey and Trinidad, we stop at Sancti Spiritus for lunch and visit the city founded by Diego Velázquez at the beginning of the 16th century. Political, economic and military center of the region, Sancti Spiritus was enriched with sumptuous mansions in the 17th and 18th centuries. Nowadays, this city is not well known to tourists who ignore its colonial center even though it is classified as a “national monument”. In the outskirts of Trinidad, we enter the Los Ingenios Valley, a 40 km long valley dotted with haciendas, slave houses and around 75 ruined sugar factories. These sugar factories which operated in the 19th century gave their name to the Valley and employed more than 11,000 slaves.

Trinidad is a town in the province of Sancti Spíritus, central Cuba. Together with the nearby Valle de los Ingenios, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. The city is located on the Caribbean coast near the Escambray Mountains.

Trinidad was founded on December 23, 1514 by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar under the name Villa de la Santísima Trinidad.

Hernán Cortés recruited men for his expedition from Juan de Grijalva's home in Trinidads, and Sancti Spíritus, at the start of his 1518 expedition. This included Pedro de Alvarado and his five brothers. After ten days, Cortes sailed, the alcayde Francisco Verdugo failing to prevent Cortes from leaving, despite orders from Diego Velázquez.

Francisco Iznaga,[6] a Basque landowner in the southern portion of Cuba during the first 30 years of the colonization of Cuba, was elected Mayor of Bayamo in 1540. Iznaga was the originator of a powerful lineage which finally settled in Trinidad where the Torre Iznaga is. His descendants fought for the independence of Cuba and for annexation to the U.S., from 1820 to 1900.

Trinidad is one of the best-preserved cities in the Caribbean from the time when the sugar trade was the main industry in the region.
Nowadays, Trinidad's main industry is tobacco processing. The older parts of town are well preserved, as the Cuban tourism industry sees benefit from tour groups. In contrast, some parts of town outside the tourist areas are very run down and in disrepair, especially in the centre. Tourism from Western nations is major source of income in the city.

Sancti Spiritus, Cuba

This colonial town was founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, at the same time as Trinidad. We see Honoratoplein. The square is mainly known as Plaza de Jesus. This small square used to be a place where the Spanish authorities once performed gruesome public hangings. In the Museo de la Esclavitud you can find an overview of life and work during the time of slavery in Cuba. Furthermore we can see the surroundings with carved walls near the famous bridge over the Yayabo river and of course the bridge itself. This terracotta bridge is Cuba's only stone arch bridge. On one of the walls an overview of the building styles during the colonial period is placed. An unexpected piece of information in a very original way. The presentation ends with a sculpture of the Iglesia Parroquial Mayor del Espríritu Santo.

Sancti-Spiritus , Towns of Cuba

We travelled over 2700 kms in 10 days, going from place to place as the day evolved

Trip through Cuba (with useful tips in comments)

Trip through Cuba goes like this: Varadero - Matanzas - Havana - Vinales - Cayo Jutias - Havana - Cienfuegos - Trinidad - Sancti Spiritus - Camaguey - Santiago de Cuba.
It took two weeks for three friends to have fantastic and unforgettable time in this picturesque country.

Top places to visit mainstream:
- Havana
- Varadero
- Vinales
- Trinidad

Hidden gems:
- Cayo Jutias
- Cienfuegos
- Sancti Spiritus

Advice:
- Bring Euros, not dollars. Even if you travel from US (Much better exchange rate)
- Don't go to places locals suggest you and offer to take you there
- If prices look suspicious, you are being ripped off. If you see locals sitting next to you, ask to have a look at their menu.
- Bargin for transportation. If you don't manage to get good price, go to bus station to locals, there will be hustlers that will offer to take you for much cheaper.
- Wi-Fi/Internet - If you are in a park and see a lot of young people with phones, ask them where is internet dealer. For couple of CUC you will manage to get internet.
- You can get local pesos in local bank without any problem
- If you stay in casa, ask owner to find you casa in the next city you are going to. But you will get the same price there that you paid for the one you are staying. (Good price - 15 CUC per room, OK price 20 CUC per room, So so price 25 CUC per room, Expensive 30 CUC per room).
- Cigars, dont get ripped off paying for banana leafs. Buy at trustworthy spots.
- Don't expect to have good mojitos in Cuba, actually totally opposite, worst I ever had.
- Try places where locals eat - authentic food for bargain price. Normally restaurants would be 10-15 CUC per person. In window shops or similar, you could get pizza or sandwich for 1 CUC.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me or just drop a question in comments section, I'll be more than willing to help.

Country rating: 4/5 - somehow you don't like it that much when you are there, feels exhausting meanwhile some moments are just amazing. But once you get out and think back, you realise how amazing that place is. It's definitely in the world's top 10 must visit places.
