The Most Amazing Town on Lake Atitlan - SAN PEDRO, GUATEMALA!!

Read all about my adventures in the travel memoir Beers, Tears & Broken Veneers available to buy right here on Amazon:

SAN PEDRO is a sleepy little town on the South Western shores of LAKE ATITLAN. Many BACKPACKERS and TRAVELERS alike flock to this town for the cheap BOOZE and NIGHTLIFE. Ask anyone in GUATEMALA about San Pedro and they all say the same thing its nothing but a party town. But is this really true, I travelled across the lake to find out.

After visiting PANAJACHEL, SAN LUCAS and SANTIAGO on Lake Atitlan it was time for me to find a town to chill out and do some editing. I really like Santiago but I found that the prices were just a little to high for me, my GUESTHOUSE for example was really nice but I was paying $12 per night. Doesn't seem like much but when you multiply that by 30 days the price goes up. I spoke to a few of my fellow travellers and they all told me that San Pedro, which was a 15 minute BOAT journey away, had the cheapest prices. But it also had a reputation as a party town. I'm no square, back in the day I partied with the best of them (I even owned a bar in PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA), but now that I'm a little older I party a lot less and just wanted to chill out.

I decided to take the chance and investigate San Pedro for myself. What I didn't know was San Pedro had two docks, a western dock and an eastern dock. The western dock is where all the bars and partying is done, one big tourist trap. The eastern dock is connected to the part of the town where the local Guatemalan's live and there are less tourists. By sheer luck the boat going from Santiago to San Pedro docked in the eastern part of the town, I had hit gold, I was away from the TOURIST TRAP.

In typical fashion I didn't book a HOSTEL, HOTEL or GUESTHOUSE. I always find that if you just turn upto a place you will get the best deal. After getting off the boat I immediately tackled the big hill that lead towards the town, it was a beast, especially carrying two bags. I got about halfway up and seen an alleyway with a bunch of signs advertising hostels. I looked around and found a place called SAN FRANCISCO. A lady showed me upstairs to a room on the top floor which had a balcony with an epic view of the LAKE. The price for this accommodation was only $8 per night, or there was a weekly rate which worked out at $6 per night. I stayed one night and loved it: free drinking water, the use of the kitchen and washroom and of course the view which was just epic. I had found my cheap accommodation for a month of editing.

As for the town eastern part of the town, well just look at the video, it is amazing. Very cultural, less tourists and lots of street art. I just loved it. I even had a walk round to the western part of San Pedro and its like a different town. BARS and RESTAURANTS everywhere, tuk tuk drivers looking for business and hundreds of tourists. After three minutes in this part of San Pedro it reminded me why I was better off in the eastern part of town.

Bottom line, San Pedro is a town of two halves. If you want to party and be surrounded by other TOURISTS and backpackers go to the western part of the town. But if you want peace and quiet go to the eastern part of town. Its rich in culture, very peaceful and very cheap.

San Pedro La Laguna is so Much Fun (Lake Atitlan)

Buy me a coffee

San Pedro is a sexy little pueblo of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It is the most popular spot for backpackers, for good reason. Even though it has a laid back vibe, it has plenty of activities, from kayaking, and paragliding, to language learning, chocolate tasting, yoga, textile, and classes for everything. It's also has many nice cafes, good food and active nightlife.

On the negative side if you try to hike the Indian Nose without a guide you might be robbed by the local banditos and the police will do nothing to help you. Hopefully they get some special forces up in those hills. It wouldn't take much to camp out a few mercenaries and have them bust the robbers.

Today I explored, hiked shopped, and toured all around San Pedro La Laguna. I saw how the local textiles are produced, tried making my own chocolate, visited a local art gallery, and hiked a local lookout point.

The Most Beautiful Lake in the World (Lake Atitlán)

I arrived at night to Lake Atitlán after traveling the whole day and crossing the border from Mexico to Guatemala. I started by exploration of villages San Marcos la Laguna and San Pedro la Laguna.

Spectacular LAKE ATITLÁN GUATEMALA 2020 | From the Sky | The MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKE in the WORLD

Lake Atitlan Guatemala is a must visit place when you visit Guatemala 2020. It is the most beautiful lake in the world. This volcanic lake surrounded by three volcanoes, mountains and charming Mayan villages is a top destination when you travel Guatemala.

If you have the chance to visit Lake Atitlan Guatemala 2020 or in the future, we highly recommend you to do it. It is one of our favourite destinations in Guatemala and in the world.

We are spending 8 months travelling in Guatemala, the country where Giorgio was born. Our Guatemala Travel Vlog 2020 (and 2019) Series will bring you to the most amazing places in Guatemala. This Lake Atitlan Guatemala Drone video shows you some of the most beautiful places and views you can find on your Guatemala travel.

In Spanish, Lake Atitlan is called Lago de Atitlan, and it is the deepest lake in Central America. The lake has a maximum depth of about 340 metres. It is situated in the district of Sololá in the western highlands of Guatemala. The lake is 18 km wide and 10 km long. It lies at an altitude of 1,562 m. It is surrounded by the three volcanoes: Volcan Atitlán, Volcan Tolimán and Volcan San Pedro.
The lake is located about 50 kilometres from Antigua Guatemala, which is also a popular and beautiful travel destination in Guatemala. It easy to travel from Lake Atitlan to Antigua Guatemala.

The lake is surrounded by many villages and towns in which Maya culture is still prevalent. Traditional clothes are still worn by many Mayan people.
Lago de Atitlán is an endorheic lake, feeding into two rivers. The lake basin is volcanic in origin, filling an enormous caldera formed by an eruption 84,000 years ago.

The towns and villages around Lake Atitlan in Guatemala are: San Juan La Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna, San Marcos La Laguna, Panajachel, Jaibalito, Santa Cruz La Laguna, Tzununá, San Pablo La Laguna, Santiago Atitlán, Santa Catarina Palopó, San Lucas Tolimán and San Antonio Palopó. Each town is unique and you should visit them all if you have the chance. San Juan Guatemala and San Pedro Guatemala are neighbouring villages but completely different. We recommend you to visit San Juan Guatemala 2020 and also San Pedro Guatemala 2020.

We hope you like our Lake Atitlan 2020 video. Next week our next Guatemala vlog 2020 will be out!

Let us know in the comments below if you have been in Guatemala, or if you plan to travel to Guatemala located in Central America.

The Most Dangerous Village at Lake Atitlán? (San Pablo)

After hearing warnings from a local farmer that San Pablo La Laguna is full of thieves and that I would probably be robbed with machetes, I became too interested to see if the village was really that bad. I decided to explore San Pablo and see how it's actually like for a visitor. I also gave a go to a jumping platform in San Marcos and made the 12 meter jump to the Lake Atitlán.

Santa Cruz La Laguna is situated on the steep mountainside of #lakeatitlan in the western highlands of Guatemala. The indigenous Maya of Santa Cruz are part of the Kaq’chikel ethnic group.

You reach Santa Cruz La Laguna by taking a boat or hiking Lake Atitlan trails. From the dock to the main village of Santa Cruz you can either take a tuk tuk or walk.

We visit CECAP in Santa Cruz La Laguna, which has an important role in the town, and we highly recommend you to visit it. Here you find Amigos de Santa Cruz, a non-profit organization educating and empowering the Santa Cruz community.

If you would like to go shopping in Guatemala Manos Cruceñas artisan store is the place. Indigenous Mayan women artisans from Santa Cruz offer beautiful handmade products with the most stunning view over the lake.

You also find a rooftop restaurant Café Sabor Cruceño which is run by young CECAP Culinary Program graduates. Delicious Guatemala food with beautiful view! We visit this Lake Atitlan restaurant three times.

We bring our new friends and fellow YouTubers Matt & Marti, which are also our neighbours here at Lake Atitlan, to a special buffet event at Café Sabor Cruceño. We are both staying in Airbnbs on the hill between San Pedro and San Juan. We decide to end our amazing day here in Santa Cruz La Laguna with our friends drinking some Guatemalan craft beer at La Iguana Perdida!

We are spending more than one month on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and also according to many people the best place in Central America. It lies in a caldera, formed by a volcano eruption.

Sacred Mayan Temple Ceremony and Tour in San Pablo, La Laguna, Guatemala.

Imagine meeting a person, (Pablo Culum) on the street and four days later going with this same person on a tour to a 1,500 year old sacred Mayan ceremonial temple in San Pablo La Laguna, Guatemala.

That is exactly what happened to me and I feel compelled to share this experience with you in the hopes that you will one day participate in this tour to the 1,500 year old Sacred Mayan Temple in San Pablo and participate in a Mayan ceremony with the local mayan shaman and medicine man and guardian of this sacred temple.

The person that I spoke with was a Mayan Shaman and Medicine Man...
the same person to whom I had a brief conversation with 4 days prior.

Pablo said nothing to me about him being mayan Shaman, or a traditional mayan medicine man or him being the guardian of a sacred site that for 1,500 years has had mayans practising sacred ceremony at this location.

All Pablo asked was if I would like to buy a drum from him to support his orphanage of 45 children in San Pablo.
I declined, politely the offer to buy the drum. Pablo then asked if I could help him with any ideas on how to promote the important cause of the orphanage in the very poor village of San Pablo to others.

I swear Pablo read right deep into my heart as I am in the social justice field of work...
I did not know that this man was a Shaman, but I do believe now that my encounter with Pablo was in no way a random occurrence. That I was intended by the Universe to work with Pablo.

Pablo said I could find more information about the orphanage on his Facebook page: Pablo Culum.
As soon as our conversation on the narrow curving streets of San Pablo ended... I knew that I would in some way help Pablo promote the orphanage... I did not know what I would do, or, even how I would do this as I had already taken on two other social justice projects and was studying Spanish five days a week.

I did go to Pablo's Facebook page and this is where I discovered who Pablo Culum really is...

I took on the project to help Pablo.
Really, I was helping myself...

For four days I worked tirelessly on this project to create an income generating idea to help Pablo Culum continue to feed the children in the orphanage of San Pablo.

This is what I did in 4 days...
I am certain that Pablo and other energies as well as my partner who was not with me in Guatemala were opening doors in the Cosmic Universe for me.

1. I created the concept, contents, publicity and agenda for a 1/2 day tour to the Sacred Temple in San Pablo La Laguna, Guatemala. Departing from the central San Pedro dock at 8:00 am. every Saturday and Sunday.

2. I translated documents from English to Spanish with mucho ayuda de mi maestro, Clarita a Cooperative Espanol de San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala.

3. I created large posters in both languages to post on light poles, tourist areas, and, mini posters to leave in cafés, pubs, yoga studios, Spanish Schools and restaurants in San Pedro, Panajachel, San Marcos and other towns around Lake Atitlan.

4. I created a plan to create strategic alliances with the local tour companies and with all the Spanish Schools in San Pedro.

The universe unfolds...
4 days later I visit the orphanage in San Pablo.
Make a promise in my heart that the tour that I created for Pablo, which he will lead will bring much needed steady income to feed, house and cloth these wonderful mayan children.

4 days after meeting Pablo we are walking to the sacred temple.

Here is a brief video of Pablo Culum describing in Spanish the history of this sacred ceremonial temple.Even if you do not speak Spanish you will understand the contents of this short video.

I believe that the Universe presents us with people who can create positive change in our lives...
Pablo was one such person.

He enabled me to have a greater understanding of how the Universe can unfold for each of us if we are willing.

Are you?!!!

Thank you Pablo!!!!

(Level of tour difficulty: 8/10. Wear hiking boots, bring water and a camera.)

English Translation of Video:
Hello friend! This is a Mayan altar that our forefathers used 1,500 years ago. That we continue to follow what took place here in the past through Mayan ceremonies such as ceremonies of purification, connecting to the Earth, bringing energy into the body and for healing. In this Mayan altar which was mostly used by the Mayans to cure people, meditation and for sound. This is a very sacred site. I invite you to come and visit this mysterious place. Thank you for visiting us and we are here to serve you, people from different countries around the world. Thank you very much.
