San Marco in Lamis is a town in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. It is located on the Gargano peninsula, an isolated mountain massif at the spur of the Italian boot. San Marco in Lamis is part of the Gargano National Park, a protected area founded in 1991, that is mainly covered by forest (the so-called Foresta Umbra).

Apart from some tourism connected to pilgrimages at the local Catholic sanctuary of St. Matthew, the economy is mostly based on agriculture.

Foggia has a dry summer, hot Mediterranean climate. Winter days can be between 15-16 °C but can be as cool as single figures. Low temperatures are generally above freezing, but frosts have experienced a handful of times a year. Summers are very hot, with temperatures in July and August often reaching 33–38 °C (91–100 °F). Temperatures exceed 40 °C (104 °F) a handful of times a decade.

Vieste is the easternmost town on the Gargano promontory, situated in the National Park, halfway between Vieste and the wonderful coastline of Mattinata.
 
Vieste has a historic medieval centre, a charming maze of ancient houses and narrow alleyways studded with typical souvenir shops and craft shops. After you've explored this ancient district, visit the Castle and the Cathedral, and then stroll down to Piazzetta Petrone, a small square with a remarkable coastal view.

In this video, we are going for a walk to one of the main places where thousands of pilgrims tend to bow and pray to the relics of Padre Pio. A beautiful Italian village San Giovanni Rotondo hidden high among the mountains of Gargano in Puglia. San Giovanni Rotondo was the home of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina from 28 July 1916 until his death on 23 September 1968. The Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church was built in devotion to the saint and dedicated on 1 July 2004. The town is renowned for its hospital and medical-research centre Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (Home for the Relief of the Suffering) founded by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.

La storia del LEONE di SAN MARCO, simbolo di VENEZIA

Il Leone di San Marco è il secolare simbolo della storica Repubblica di Venezia, la famigerata Serenissima. Oggi è l’emblema ufficiale della città di Venezia e della Regione Veneto e compare in tutte le città che sono state sotto il dominio della Serenissima. Il leone di San Marco è un leone alato che rappresenta simbolicamente Marco l’evangelista, patrono della città di Venezia. Il leone, da sempre simbolo di forza, fierezza, maestosità, nobiltà e coraggio, venne associato a San Marco per come enfatizzava nel suo Vangelo la potenza della Resurrezione, la maestà e la regalità di Cristo.

Il significato del legame con Venezia risiede nelle parole all’interno del libro posto sotto la zampa del leone: “Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus, hic requiescet corpus tuum” – “Pace a te Marco, mio evangelista, qui riposi il tuo corpo.” Si narra infatti che, durante il viaggio di Marco da Aquileia a Roma, un angelo, in forma di leone alato, gli apparve in sogno mentre sostava nella Laguna Veneta preannunciandogli, con tali parole, che in quelle terre avrebbe trovato un giorno riposo e venerazione il suo corpo.
La leggenda si tramandò nei secoli da padre in figlio. Col passare del tempo i veneziani si sentirono sempre più in dovere di far tornare San Marco a Venezia. Per tale motivo, con uno stratagemma, le sue reliquie furono trafugate nel 828 dai Veneziani ad Alessandria d’Egitto e nascoste a Venezia. La tradizione vuole che il 25 Aprile del 1094 durante la consacrazione della nuova Basilica al Santo un pilastro di marmo si spezzasse facendo comparire al suo interno la cassetta contenente le reliquie del Santo.
Il possesso delle reliquie del Santo giovò all’immagine internazionale di Venezia, custode di uno dei quattro evangelisti, ed ebbe un forte impatto sulla cittadinanza che sentendosi sicura e protetta sviluppò una forte devozione.
Il Leone marciano assunse così significato politico e religioso in grado di esprimere identità, potenza e maestosità, ma anche di forza della parola per via del legame con il Santo, di elevazione spirituale per via delle ali, di sapienza per il libro sotto la zampa e di giustizia per la spada.
In origine il Gonfalone di San Marco era oro e azzurro, il colore dei Veneti, tanto che in latino Venetus indica il colore turchese. Il leone poteva essere rappresentato con il libro chiuso con la zampa sinistra e con una spada nella destra, con le zampe anteriori nella terraferma e quelle posteriori nell’acqua, a simboleggiare il dominio in terra e in mare, e infine in due differenti posture: andante, cioè in piedi sulle quattro zampe, oppure in moleca, seduto.

Gargano nombre que recibe un macizo montañoso, y por extensión, un importante promontorio en el este de Italia, forma la «espuela» de la «bota» de la península italiana.

Esta región natural se ubica en la provincia de Foggia, norte de la región de Apulia, se corresponde principalmente con el macizo llamado «El espolón de Italia» (Sperone d'Italia) el cual se prolonga 70 kilómetros hacia el Este sobre el mar Adriático formando un cabo redondeado llamado la Testa dil Gargano (Cabeza del Gargano) y delimita por el norte al golfo de Manfredonia; mientras que hacia el Oeste se entronca sutilmente con los Apeninos mediante las elevaciones llamadas Tavoliera delle Puglie. En total la región comprehende unos 2015 km² y es el núcleo del Parque nacional del Gargano creado en 1995 que incluye como anexos a las próximas pequeñas islas Tremiti y Pianosa.

En cuanto sistema montañoso, el Gargano es el único ubicado enteramente en la Apulia. Éste en su origen era una isla que se unió a la tierra firme por la colmatación de la zona que hoy corresponde al llano valle de la Tavoliere, tal colmatación se produjo merced a la progresiva acumulación de depósitos aluvionales aportados principalmente por el torrente Candelaro que hoy corre en dirección sudeste por el mencionado valle de Tavoliere. La costa litoral septentrional es baja y arenosa e incluye a la albufera llamada Lago de Varano y al lido que enciera (contiguamente al oeste del anterior lago) al Lago de Lesina, las costas orientales y meridionales de la región del Gargano son bastante elevadas con frecuentes farallones de colores claros.

El macizo montañoso está constituido por rocas calcáreas y tiene su cumbre en el Monte Pelado de 1056 msnm que se ubica en las coordenadas 41°44′00″N 15°45′00″E / 41.733333, 15.75 (prácticamente en el centro de la región del Gargano). El terreno calcáreo implica la existencia de un curioso relieve kárstico teniendo entre sus aspectos más interesantes a numerosas grutas que fueron habitadas por humanos desde el paleolítico.
La zona más interna de la región se encuentra recubierta de densas forestas en las que predominan los robles, de modo que la Foresta Umbra es, para los parámetros de Europa Occidental, una zona relativamente poco poblada. Los habitantes tienden a ubicarse en los centros costeros como Manfredonia (la principal ciudad y puerto), Vieste, Mattinata, Rodi Garganico y Peschici o al pie de las montañas como ocurre con San Giovanni Rotondo, Sannicandro Garganico, San Marco in Lamis, Carpino, Ischitella, Vico del Gargano, Cagnano Varano y Monte Sant'Angelo; estas localidades poseen numerosos santuarios medievales donde se ha desarrollado un gran fervor religioso reactivado en el siglo XX por la actividad del célebre Padre Pio (o Pío de Pietrelcina).FONTE : WIKIPEDIA
