OAXACA CITY, MEXICO | 10 Best Things To Do In & Around Oaxaca City

Oaxaca City is the capital of the state of Oaxaca in southwestern Mexico. It’s truly one of the best places to visit in Mexico thanks to its mix of interesting history, world-class cuisine, and colorful examples of indigenous and colonial cultures.

10 INCREDIBLE Things To Do In & Around Oaxaca City:

10. Watch the sunset
Since Oaxaca city is surrounded by mountains, it’s possible to enjoy wonderful sunsets and sunrises here. Go to any rooftop in the city or hike up to the “Auditorio Guelaguetza” for an amazing view.

9. Indulge in the Oaxacan Cuisine
From some of the best experimental restaurants to delicious street food, the Oaxacan cuisine is uniquely influenced by its cultural diversity. The area is best known for its 7 varieties of mole.

☑️ Cooking class:

8. Hike at Pueblos Mancomunados
About a 1.5 hour drive from Oaxaca City, you can find the Pueblos Mancomunados. We visited the largest village, named Cuajimoloyas, which was easiest to get to by local bus from Oaxaca City. There are a wide variety of outdoor activities you can do here including hiking, mountain biking, ziplining and bird watching.

7. Visit the Local Markets
“Mercado veinte de Noviembre” and “Mercado Benito Juárez” are great places to start and dive into the extraordinary food this area has to offer. They are both located in the historic center, just one block from the main square “Zócalo”.

6. Visit a mezcalería
It would be a shame to visit Oaxaca and not try its most famous spirit made from agave plants. There are many mezcalerías in the city where you can taste mezcal. But for a real authentic experience, head out of town and visit one of the surrounding mezcal distilleries.

5. Day trip to Mitla
Located about 31 miles, or 50km to the south of Oaxaca City sits the town of Mitla. Here, you can visit ruins that are of Zapotec and Mixtec origin as well as Prehistoric caves, which provided shelter for centuries with rock-art evidence from 10,000 years ago.

4. Visit the Historic Downtown (Free Walking Tour)
The city of Oaxaca has been able to preserve its unique character thanks to its beautiful colors and interesting architecture. Every day at 10AM and 5PM you can meet a local tour guide at the Teatro Macedonio Alcalá.

☑️ Free walking tour:

3. Join local festivities
Oaxaca is known to have some of the most incredible festivities where the creativity of the locals is expressed at its best. You can find entertainment in the city throughout the entire year.

2. Monte Albán
The historic settlement of Monte Albán is located on a mountaintop just 8 kms, or 5miles to the west of Oaxaca City.

☑️ Monte Alban tour:

1. Hierve el Agua
Located 1 hour and 45 mins from Oaxaca City, Hierve el Agua is truly one of the most unique natural wonders in Mexico. You can hike to the top and the bottom of the waterfalls or freshen up at the infinity pool, which offers some amazing views of the surrounding mountains.

MERIDA, MEXICO | 8 Incredible Things To Do In & Around Mérida

Mérida, Mexico is located in the northwest of the beautiful Yucatan State. It’s the state capital and widely known as the safest city in Mexico. But what attracts most visitors is its thriving food and cultural scene. With an interesting mix of Mayan and colonial culture, Mérida is encircled by ancient temples, sacred cenotes, and colorful streets with colonial mansions.

Here are our top 8 things you SHOULD do in Mérida, Mexico.

8. Walk the Paseo de Montejo
Home to some of the most beautiful and iconic buildings of the city, the Paseo de Montejo is a great place for an afternoon stroll.

7. Try the local Yucatecan cuisine
Trying the local Yucatecan cuisine is an absolute must when in Mérida! Food is a big part of the city’s culture, bringing together Mayan, Spanish, and Lebanese influences. In the center, you can find many great restaurants that serve traditional dishes.

6. Explore nearby Izamal
The small town of Izamal is about 70km or 43 miles away from Mérida, making for a great day trip. There’s a collectivo on the corner of Calle 50 and 63 which takes you from the center of Merida to the heart of Izamal in less than 1 and a half hours. Most of the buildings in the downtown area are painted yellow, giving the city a distinct bright feeling.

5. Swim in the nearby cenotes
Mérida can get very hot during the day. So one great way to cool off is to visit a nearby cenote! There are tons of beautiful cenotes around the city. Some are easily reachable by bus and others are more hidden, requiring a rental car to get there. Do your research before you visit as some can get very crowded.

4. Mérida's Historic Center (Free walking tour)
The 4th best thing to do in Mérida is to explore the Historic Center. With many colorful homes, beautiful colonial architecture, churches, and cute parks, this part of the city never bores. The streets are clean, well-maintained, and filled with restaurants, shops, and entertainment. The best way to learn about the city is to go on a free walking tour.

☑️ Merida Free Walking Tour:

3. Day trip to Celestún
Located along the coast, Celestún is another great day trip destination. It’s about 100 km or 62 miles from Mérida and it takes around 2 hours to get there by bus. Here, you’ll find the Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve, which is home to flamingos, crocodiles, and many other birds. As many as 35,000 flamingos live here from November to February. But besides the flamingos, Celestun also has a gorgeous beach for relaxing and swimming.

☑️ Book Celestún Boat Tour from Mérida:

2. Enjoy Mérida's cultural performances
The thing we loved the most about the city of Mérida was its evening entertainment. There’s always something going on every night of the week. The city’s streets and plazas come to life with cultural performances, concerts, and dances that are free and open to the public.

1. Visit the Uxmal Ruins
At number one, we have one of the best archeological sites in Mexico: the Uxmal Ruins. Located 85 km or 53 miles to the south of Mérida, Uxmal is an important Mayan City and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

☑️ Book Uxmal Day Tour:

VALLADOLID, YUCATAN MEXICO | Best Things To Do In Valladolid

Find the best things to do in Valladolid Mexico here. Valladolid is nestled in the eastern part of the Yucutan in Mexico. There are about 45,000 residents here, including the surrounding small communities. It’s also only 40 kilometers from Chichen Itza, one of the seven world wonders. Here are the best things to do in Valladolid from our perspective:

6: Visiting Cenote Suytun. This cenote has become a social media sensation in recent years because of its unique man-made platform that extends to the middle of the water. If it’s a sunny day, the light will shine through the cenote roof directly onto the platform. You can also visit Cenote Kaapeh right next to it. It’s included in the price of admission and definitely worth the visit as it has jungle vines and trees growing out of it.

5: The 5th best activity we did in Valladolid was Rio Lagartos. It took about an hour and a half to drive through the Yucatan jungle to the small fishing town and then we hopped on a boat tour once we got there. On the tour, we saw alligators, flamingos, pelicans, and even a small pink lake.

4. Exploring the city of Valladolid. This city blew our minds with how colorful it was! We took a free walking tour and learned about the Spanish and Mayan history of the city. It was also a great experience to visit the Convento de San Bernadino de Siena in the evening. The town puts on a light show every night, telling the story of the city and how it came to be.

3: Cenote Xkeken. This unique cave cenote had giant stalactites cascading from the roof as well as long vines that extended all the way into the water. It was a magical experience to swim amongst the vines and look up to the sunlight above. We also purchased a discounted ticket to Cenote Samula, which was within a 5 minute walk. It was worth it to see the one of the brightest blue cenotes we’ve seen so far in the Yucatan.

2. Visiting Chichen Itza. This world wonder was immaculately kept, especially the main pyramid of El Castillo. Standing at 98 feet tall, it stands alone in the center of the ruins and is extremely beautiful. The crowds were large due to its world wonder status, but we still had a great tour experience thanks to our knowledgeable guide who looped us into some fascinating Mayan history.

1. The best activity to do in Valladolid is visiting the ancient ruins of Ek Balam. We ranked this number one because of how much it surprised us. It felt much larger than Chichen Itza, had amazing rock art, and we were allowed to climb up the stairs on both of the major pyramids. Being able to touch and feel the structures brought us closer to understanding the true beauty and intricacy of the Mayan culture.

A Quick Trip to Celaya, Guanajuato

Just a quick trip to Celaya for the Exploding Hammer Festival which is held in a small village nearby, San Juan de la Vega. I couldn’t find anywhere to stay there so Celaya was the closest city. I met with a local named Miki who showed me around the Centro and connected me with a local photographer Natha who would go with me to the festival and meet up with some friends of his who were participating in the festival.

Central America and Mexico’s 7 Unmissable Experiences

Central America and Mexico are known for their diverse landscapes of mountains, deserts and beautiful beaches. Find out about seven unmissable experiences you should try in the region .

Adrenaline seekers make the 40-minute trek up Cerro Negro’s shadeless slopes to the smoking crater where they don coveralls and goggles, mount a wooden board and whizz down a steep incline of black ash to the bottom at speeds of 40-60mph (60-100 kph. One of the best places to practice volcano surfing in the world, Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro is a bucket-list must. For more adventures, visit:

Head to the Mexican town of San Juan de la Vega for the Exploding Hammer Festival, which takes place every February. It involves strapping home-made explosives to sledgehammers and smashing them into the ground. It can be quite dangerous, so don’t get too close! If Mexico takes your fancy, head to:

Rio Celeste is located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park in the Costa Rican province of Alajuela. In the past, visitors were allowed to swim in the river, but it is now prohibited within the park for safety reasons. While you may not be able to take a dip here, seeing this spectacular and surreal blue river is an absolute must when visiting this part of the country. Find out more about the river here:

Before becoming the it destination of the travel bloggerati, Las Coloradas was just a sleepy fishing village on the Yucatán coast with a penchant for salt production that dated back to the Mayan period. The pink colour comes from the algae, plankton and brine shrimp that reside in the waters of Las Coloradas and become visible as the water evaporates under the beating Mexican sun. For more on Las Coloradas, visit:

The Sloth Sanctuary is located between Limon and Cahuita on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The 320-acre (130-hectare) private nature reserve was previously called Aviarios del Caribe. You can get to the sanctuary via rental car, by taking a Sansa Airlines flight to Limon followed by a taxi ride, hopping on an Interbus via route Limon/Cahuita/Hone Creek/Puerto Viejo (let the driver know you are going to the sanctuary and you can get dropped off right at the gate), or by hiring a private shuttle van. If the Sloth Sanctuary piques your interest, check out:

Stay on a private island in this Airbnb in Belize. Search for Little Peter Oasis and have your own personal bungalow, floating on the Caribbean Sea. You can snorkel in the nearby reef or go parasailing, and there’s even a helipad that doubles as a putting green. Discover more islands in Central America at:

Close to Cancún there is an entire underwater museum to be discovered that many people have never heard of, and it has a mission beyond just the enjoyment of divers. Launched in 2009, this impressive feat of both imagination and engineering includes more than 500 life-size sculptures that are accessible from three separate points in Quintana Roo: Isla Mujeres, Cancún and Punta Nizuc. Eating Street Food to Five Star Restaurants in Mexico City

This was my third time in Mexico City in less than two years. When my friend Eric Kim told me he was doing a street photography workshop there I had to go back and join him. Luckily it was right after the Exploding Hammer Festival in San Juan de la Vega, so timing was perfect.

It was fun hanging out with Eric and Cindy and his workshop participants. We ate so much good food, from street tacos to five star restaurants in Polanco. My favorite was Dulce Patria, just amazing and so affordable compared to restaurants in the US.

I spent the rest of the time with my friend Alan, he rented a two bedroom AirBnb and let me stay in the second bedroom. It was fun to hang out, eat more, and explore the city. Mexico City is one of my favorite cities in the world for food, I can’t wait to return and eat more.
