10 Best place to visit in San Giuseppe Jato Italy

Driving through San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Jato (south of Palermo, Sicily)

Hello everyone,
this time we are glad to show you San Cipirello and San Giuseppe Jato, two villages in the province of Palermo.

The first inhabited center in the area lies on top of the adjacent Mount Jato, dating back to prehistoric times, with influence of Greek culture from the 6th century BC. Known under the name of Iaitas in Greek sources and Ietas in Latin, this ancient village lived its most flourishing period in its history from the age of Islamic domination of Sicily to the Hohenstaufen one (c. 975–1246), when it was an important stronghold. It is believed that the last remnants of the original Muslim stronghold were demolished in 1246 by the troops of Frederick II of Sicily.

The modern village was founded in 1779 at the foot of Mount Jato.
In 1838, San Giuseppe Jato was destroyed by a terrible flood. Many people moved few yards away and build a new village named San Cipirello. Nowadays, San Giuseppe Jato and San Cipirello are joined by the same main road that connect them.

The Three Top Reasons You Can’t Miss the Piana degli Albanesi Village

Piana degli Albanesi, or simply Piana, is a tiny mountain village that is just a 40-minute ride away from Palermo center. It is really famous for the three major reasons that I’m going to tell you about in this video.

If you don’t know me, my name is Nico. I am a 100% purebred Sicilian and the founder of Wearepalermo.com and The Sicilian Way, the coolest travel guide to Palermo.

Let’s get started!

1. They make the best cannolis in Sicily
2. Residents don’t have Sicilian origins and speak another language
3. You can relax in the oldest artificial lake in Sicily

13FOTG in Graniti, Sicily 2017

13 Feet off the Ground is a collective of established female artists based in Vancouver, Canada. We came together through an opportunity to participate in a residency program, 'Graniti Murales', in Graniti, Sicily, where we stayed for 4 weeks in the Fall of 2017. During this time, we created contemporary murals and one installation for this ancient village, as well as create a lifelong bond with each other we only hope will strengthen over time.

This video is just a glimpse of what our adventure was like during our trip. We hope the immense love and community we felt in Graniti, is captured here.

We believe that the work of our first residency in Graniti opens opportunity, at an international level, for future dialogue around our roles as female artists.

Piana degli Albanesi - Albanian heritage in Sicily and great cannoli!

#sicily #sicilianfood #albany

Hello everyone,
this time we are glad to show you Piana degli Albanesi, another village in the province of Palermo.

The official name of the town was Piana dei Greci until 1941. This village is situated on a mountainous plateau and encircled by high mountains, on the eastern side of the imposing Mount Pizzuta, the city, which is mirrored on a large lake. Piana degli Albanesi is 24 km far from Palermo, the capital of Sicily.

Piana degli Albanesi was founded in the late 15th century by a large group of Albanian refugees coming from the Balkans during the conquest of the latter by the Ottoman Empire. The exodus began after the death of Skanderbeg, who successfully fought Ottoman armies for more than two decades.

The town is the most important center of the Albanians of Sicily, as well as the largest and most populous colony of Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian or Albanians of Italy) and it is the episcopal see of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, constituency of the Italo-Albanian Church whose jurisdiction covers all Albanians of Sicily who practice the Byzantine rite.

The community, after five centuries from its foundation, has maintained many ethnic elements of Albanian culture like language, religious ritual, traditional costumes, music and folklore.

Piana degli Albanesi boasts a great local gastronomy. It offers dishes and desserts typical of the Sicilian-Albanian tradition, in which one can note the presence of elements deriving from the Balkans and the Mediterranean. The delicious bread and cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi are very popular in the entire Sicily!
