The Sanctuary of San Luca has been the symbol of Bologna for centuries. It is connected to the city centre by a road that unwinds for four kilometres with a portico that has a series of over 600 archways making it the longest in the world. Together with the other city porticoes, it was in included the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 2021.

Santo Stefano is known as the ‘sette chiese’ (seven churches) because it is the merger of multiple churches built in different eras. According to legend it was built by Petronius on the ruins of a pre-existing pagan temple, flanked by a reproduction of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The square is overlooked by the Church of the Crucifix, the Church of Saint Vitale and Saint Agricola and the Church of the Trinity, restructured between the 12th and 13th centuries. Inside is the Courtyard of Pilate with a marble basin donated by the Kings of the Lombards and a Benedictine cloister.

The Archiginnasio is one of the most important palaces in Bologna. Located in the heart of the historic city centre, it has been the home of the Municipal Library since 1838. The Palace was commissioned by Cardinal Borromeo and was built between 1562 and 1563. The Anatomical Theatre was built in carved wood in 1637 to teach anatomy.

The porticoes of Bologna, almost 38 miles (62km) long of which 25 miles (40km) are in the city centre, make the city of Bologna truly unique. Ever since 1100, when the growth of the University (the oldest in the western world) led to the need for new urban spaces, the porticoes have become places where people can socialise and trade, an open-air symbol of Bologna’s hospitality. The porticoes shelter people from the sun and the rain.

Malatestiana Library, Cesena, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Europe

The Malatestiana Library, also known as the Malatesta Novello Library, is a public library in the city of Cesena in northern Italy. Purpose-built from 1447 to 1452 and opened in 1454, and named after the local aristocrat Malatesta Novello, it is significant for being the first civic library in Europe, i.e. belonging to the commune rather than the church or a noble family, and open to the general public. The library was inscribed in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2005. The building and creation of the library was commissioned by the Lord of Cesena, Malatesta Novello. Construction was directed by Matteo Nuti from Fano and lasted from 1447 to 1452. At Novello's direction, the books were owned by the commune of Cesena, not the monastery or the family. Because of this governing structure, the collection was not dispersed like many monastic libraries. In 2005 UNESCO included the Library in the Memory of the World Programme Register. The Malatestiana Library is the only one in the world of the so-called humanistic-conventual type, which blends humanistic principles with arhictecture otherwise reserved for religious buildings, and has preserved its structure, fittings and codexes since its opening more than 550 years ago. The main doorway was the work of sculptor Agostino di Duccio (1418-1481). The walnut door at the main entrance dates back to 1454 and was carved by the artist Cristoforo from San Giovanni in Persiceto. Inside, the library features geometric design, typical of the early Italian Renaissance style. The aula has the layout of a basilica, with three naves divided by ten rows of white columns made from local stone; there are eleven bays in each aisle, which are pole vaulted. The central nave is barrel vaulted and ends with a rose under which is the gravestone of Malatesta Novello. The fittings are composed of 58 desks, with coat of arms at the sides. The light comes in through the 44 Venetian style windows, which were purpose designed to provide ideal lighting for reading. The library has over 400,000 books, including over 340 codices covering various fields such as religion, Greek and Latin classics, sciences and medicine, and about 3,200 manuscripts from the 16th century. The oldest manuscript in the library is a copy of Isidore's Etymologiae.
