San Giovanni d´Asso, Italy
San Giovanni d’Asso is a small municipality in Italy which has approximately 891 inhabitants and stretches for over 66 kilometers. It is located on the countryside of Crete Senesi. Siena, the capital of this province, is located about 30 kilometers south-east of San Giovanni d’Asso and Florence is about 80 kilometers away. S.Giovanni Valdarno, luogo di nascita dei pittori Masaccio e Giovanni da S.Giovanni, comune di 17141 abitanti, provincia di Arezzo, Valdarno, Toscana, Italia. Come indica il suo nome si trova nella valle del fiume Arno. All'origine (1296) si chiamava Castel S.Giovanni e venne edificato per conto di Firenze sui progetti che l'architetto Arnolfo di Cambio elaborò per realizzare gli avamposti del governo centrale, le terre nuove fiorentine (non vi è però la certezza della diretta partecipazione dell'urbanista ai lavori). La struttura del centro storico richiama l'organizzazione della città romana con la grande piazza centrale dalla quale si dipartono i due assi principali perpendicolari tra loro dai quali nascono le strade secondarie. Tra la fine del XIII ed il XIV secolo l'area del comune, anche oggi denominata Valdarno Superiore, non era ancora inserita in modo stabile nell'ambito del contado di Firenze. A questo scopo il capoluogo fiorentino decise di consolidare il controllo dell'intera area dell'Arno attraverso un complesso sistema di presidi militari. I centri abitati già esistenti vennero difesi con la creazione di cinte murarie come nella vicina Montevarchi, mentre al tempo stesso vennero fondate tre nuove città prontamente munite di difese murarie. La fondazione dei comuni di S.Giovanni e Castelfranco di Sopra risale infatti al 1296, secondo lo storico Giovanni Villani, mentre una provvisione del 26 gennaio 1299 prevedeva la costruzione della terza città, Terranuova Bracciolini, che venne popolata soprattutto grazie alla vicina città di Castel S.Giovanni. I coloni vennero incentivati attraverso notevoli sgravi fiscali, ma sebbene Firenze stessa si fosse accollata la parte economica di queste nuove costruzioni, a loro spettava sempre la manodopera manuale e l'edificazione delle nuove abitazioni. I tre paesi dovevano essere prevalentemente agricoli e come tale venne stabilito che nessun nobile potesse risiedervi stabilmente, ma potesse mantenervi dei possedimenti terrieri, o edilizi. Firenze lamentò in quest'epoca una certa lentezza nell'esecuzione di questi lavori di edificazione e fortificazione, che esponeva l'intera area ad attacchi sempre più frequenti, soprattutto ad opera dei pisani e della vicina Arezzo. Già nel 1352 un rapporto locale indicava come le mura risultassero in pessime condizioni e come tra il 1356 ed il 1363 la cinta muraria venne ristrutturata e rafforzata portando a ventiquattro il numero delle torri difensive. Dopo la conquista di Arezzo lo stato fiorentino dovette poi scontrarsi con la politica espansionistica dei Visconti di Milano, che miravano ad impadronirsi delle terre dell'Emilia e della Toscana. Questo fece sì che il paese di S.Giovanni mantenesse la propria funzione di presidio militare di rilievo.

Civitella in Val di Chiana is a comune in the province of south Arezzo in Tuscany. It is one of the best-preserved of the network of Lombard fortresses of the 6th and the 7th century in central Italy, strategically placed to control the whole territory. The characteristic elliptical shape of the military settlements can still be seen in the layout of the town walls.
Already inhabited in Roman times, it was occupied and fortified by the Lombards in the 6th century. In the 11th century it became a possession of the Bishops of Arezzo, and renamed Civitella del Vescovo (Little Bishop's City). In the 13th century the city was destroyed after the battle of Pieve al Toppo, cited by Dante Alighieri and fought nearby between Arezzo and Siena. After the Aretine defeat at Campaldino (1289) the city was annexed by Florence. In 1311 Arezzo regained it, holding until 1348, whenceforth it remained the seat of a Florentine podestà. Civitella enjoys one of the most scenic views of the Arezzo valley.
On 29 June 1944, 244 citizens of Civitella (146),Cornia,Solaia and San Pancrazio were massacred by Hermann Göring Division, in retaliation for the killing of two German soldiers by the hands of partisans.
In 1963 the city received the Gold Medal for Civilian Valour.
The city council has also opened a room of memories.

Greve in Chianti, Florence, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
Greve in Chianti is an Italian municipality of 13767 inhabitants of the metropolitan city of Florence in Tuscany, located on via Chiantigiana, which connects Florence with Siena passing through the suggestive panorama of Chianti. Since the Middle Ages the history of Greve has been linked to its main square which has always exercised the function of a market. The village was a simple dependence of the castle of Montefioralle but thanks to its position, it is located at the point where the connecting roads between the Valdarno, the Val di Greve and the road that from Florence through the Chianti Hills led to the Sienese , could become the main market in the area. The square with the characteristic shape of an elongated triangle is largely surrounded by arcades and in the center is the statue of the sculptor Romeo Pazzini depicting Giovanni da Verrazzano. One of the vertices of the square is occupied by the parish church dedicated to the Holy Cross (19th century). From the historical-administrative point of view, before entering the Province of Florence, Greve was part of the vicariate of San Giovanni Valdarno, although on the border with the vicariate of Certaldo (which included the province of Chianti, currently all included in the Province of Siena).
