**Some History**
The story of San Felice Circeo immediately begins with the legend of the enchantress Circe told by Homer in the Odyssey.
Legend aside, the history of the inhabitans on the site is much older. In 1939 the remains of the Neanderthal man dated 50,000 years ago were found in the Circeo sea caves.
This discovery was followed by others that demonstrated the presence of Homo Sapiens in the area.
The first news from literary sources began to have in the sixth century BC. and document the presence of a Latin colony in the area; sources confirmed by the remains of a temple and the walls of the ancient city found in Colle Monticchio dating from the same period.
In 491 BC the ancient Circeii people, which were under the control of Rome, were occupied for about a hundred years by the Volsci and then returned to the Romans. The latter installed a second Latin colony there and built the walls of the Acropolis.
At the fall of the Roman Empire the city entered a sad period characterized by barbarian and Saracen raids.
In the thirteenth century Pope Gregory IX ceded the fortress to the Templars to defend the coast from pirate attacks, they remained there for about twenty years and built the *Torre dei Templari* and the Convent there, buildings still unchanged today for charm and historical importance.
After this brief Templar period, at the end of the XII century, the Castrum passed under the dominion of the Annibaldi, who sold it in 1301 to Pietro Caetani.
The prince had several buildings built, including the Casino di Caccia, the current Villa Bocchi, and the top floor of the baronial palace.
The virtual walk starts just in the vicinity of the walls surrounding the town, and heads over to the main sea-side avenue and castle, to continue along the main strets and inside the old city and its narrow streets..

San Felice Circeo - Do like the Romans do! [STREET VIEW]
Do like the Romans do and take a break at San Felice Circeo! Many Romans have property in San Felice as it is about one and a half hours drive south from Rome, convenient and beautiful. On the cliff of San Felice, which is a national park, there are several splendid view points, both towards south overlooking the bay leading to Terracina and towards north – over the Sabaudia lagoon.
To tell the truth, there is slight feeling that the lovely coast town of San Felice Circeo is a bit beyond its prime. Breathing in the atmosphere, it felt as if 25 years ago it must have been associated with status, with glam and it definitely still has a good spirit to it, but it also feels a bit tired. The antique part of the city uphill offers a calm lovely atmosphere and good food.
San Felice is a bit in between two worlds, as we experienced it when we explored the coastal area driving south from Rome. Apart from the impressive lagoon of Sabaudia, in our personal opinion - between Rome and San Felix Circeo there is not much along the coast side worthwhile in terms of beauty.
Big parts in-between are former marshlands turned into rural areas somewhat 80-90 years ago, with little to offer in sight visiting and architecture. Here I have to make a major exception for Giardino di Ninfa (The Gardens of Ninfa), which is beautiful as a fairytale! ???? It’s about 20 minute’s drive inland from Latina.
From San Felice southward starts a journey to much older places, several of them ancient, like Terracina, from where we have a little teaser, until we can make a proper vlog on it ????

Circeo National Park (Italian: Parco Nazionale del Circeo) is an Italian national park founded in 1934. It occupies a strip of coastal land from Anzio to Terracina, including also a sector of forest in the mainland of San Felice Circeo, and the island of Zannone.
The park was established by order of Benito Mussolini, under advice from Senator Raffaele Bastianelli, to preserve the last remains of the Pontine Marshes which were being reclaimed in that period. It is the only national park in Italy to occupy only a plain and coastal area.

The old town of San Felice Circeo, have very old origins. Roman Triumvir Lepidus was exiled her after his fall in 36BC by his former colleague, and future Emperor, Octavian (Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome, that started the Imperial Era). Ruins of his house are still visible. The history of this town is tightly linked with Rome. After its fall in 476 AC, pirates and moorish invasions from the sea until the construction, in 16th century and thanks to Pope Pio VI, of four defense towers dislocated along the Promontory coastline. As a result, all enemy ships were not able to hide in the bays, and attacks to town became suddenly more difficult to accomplish. There are a lot of stories of pirates, kidnapped women, adventures, death and victories. And don't forget that Ulysses too, have been attracted by the charm of this Promontory.

Unsere Liebe Frau im Walde-St. Felix is a comune (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located about 20 kilometres (12 mi) west of the city of Bolzano.
The village has two coat-of-arms regarding the two joined municipalities. The shield is azure with an or square, the sides curved and the corners decorated with shamrock. The four vertices represent the four original German-speaking municipalities of Non Valley: Laurein, Proveis, Unsere Liebe Frau im Walde and St. Felix. The first emblem represents a church, the second St. Felix with a palm in the left hand and a book in the right. The emblem was adopted in 1966.

San Felice Circeo è un comune italiano di 10 018 abitanti della provincia di Latina nel Lazio. Dista da Latina 34 km, da Roma 98 km e da Napoli 150 km.
San Felice Circeo e Sabaudia con drone
Ecco a voi un documentario minuto dedicato al bellissimo Circeo.
Il comune di San Felice Circeo si trova nell'agro Pontino, a circa 100 km a sud di Roma.
Il promontorio appare da Anzio come il profilo di un volto di una donna sdraiata (identificata con la Maga Circe, in cui la vetta Picco di Circe corrisponde al suo naso), mentre da Gaeta appare come un'isola, l'antica Isola Eea.
Il promontorio nel quaternario era veramente un'isola e varie ne sono le prove: il ritrovamento sul promontorio di un'arenaria bigia ritrovata poi solamente a 300 metri di profondità, i solchi marini fossili, i segni dell'erosione marina e le informazioni ottenute dallo studio degli strati pliocenici.
