What to visit in palermo • Church Of San Cataldo

Church Of San Cataldo ???????? English Version
The Church of San Cataldo, located in Palermo, Sicily, is a remarkable example of Sicilian medieval art and architecture. Believed to have been founded during the reign of William I, it was possibly the chapel of a palace built by Majone da Bari, the Grand Admiral of the king. The church exhibits a fusion of Islamic, Latin, and Byzantine elements, seen in its elegant quadrilateral structure, red domes, and original Cosmatesque floor decorated with marble and Egyptian porphyry. Since 1937, it has been the seat of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, and it is open to the public every day, allowing visitors to appreciate its rich history and architectural beauty

ABOUT US
At age 50 we left our jobs, sold most of our belongings, and decided to follow our dream of international travel for seven to nine months a year. Our goal is not to visit the most countries or see the most sites in a short amount of time, but to spend several months in each county that we visit, becoming immersed in the local area. When not traveling internationally, we hope to spend time visiting various beaches, cities, and national parks across the United States. We will show not only where we are going and what we are doing, but also provide practical advice on how to travel and explore on a reasonable budget in a relaxed and leisurely manner. Follow along as we figure out how to navigate our early retirement and semi-nomadic life.

Palermo Italy - Sightseeing Tour in the capital of Sicily

???? Elevate your travel experience with our unique accessories:
???? Thank you for your support! ????

In this video, we are continuing our road trip in Italy and this time, we are in the southern part of Italy, in beautiful Palermo Italy, the capital city of the Sicilian Island. Palermo Italy is the largest city in the island of Sicily and one of the top destinations in southern Italy. To get to Palermo from Naples Italy, we decided to travel via a car ferry which was suppose to be a 10 hour overnight sail. Once we got to Naples, we were told that the weather was bad and the waves were too high, so the ferry will not depart until next morning. Since we bought tickets that included sleeping cabins, we were allowed on board so we can spend the night and most of next day on the ferry. The water was very agitated so we felt pretty sick the whole time we were on the Palermo ferry.
Once we got to Palermo Italy, we decided to walk through the city and check off some places on our list of things to see in Palermo.
Our fist stop is Piazza Marina Palermo where locals organized an antiquities Sunday market. Near the Sunday antiques market is the Giardino Garibaldi park where we took a stroll. The Garibaldi park Palermo is a great place to spend some time with family and for kids to have fun riding their bicycles.
If you are looking for places to eat or drink in Palermo, visit via Vittorio Emanuele Palermo which is the main walking street in Palermo Italy. As a travel tip, in order to find the top things to do in Palermo, we checked out Trip Advisor and found some cool ideas of top sights to visit in Palermo. Once we got some ideas of what to do and where to go, we went on a walking tour in Palermo.
As we were walking through the city, we wondered off the main street and ended up in Piazza Pretoria Palermo. In the middle of the Piazza, there is a beautiful fountain - Fontana Pretoria. The Pretoria fountain is beautifully decorated with sculptures and although the water feature was off, Fontana Pretoria is a beautiful place to visit while in Palermo Italy.
Next on our Palermo walking tour, we visit the Santa Maria Dell'Ammiraglio Palermo known for it's beautiful byzantine mosaics. Although we were not able to go into the church, we were able to visit the Basilica San Cataldo right next to it. The San Cataldo Church has three beautiful domes and a unique style.
Next on our Palermo sightseeing tour, we visit the Basilica Santa Caterina D'alessandria. The main reason why we wanted to visit the Santa Caterina D'asessandria church is because it has a terrace that offers a beautiful view of the City of Palermo Italy. You can see the whole city from above so if you are looking for the best viewpoint in Palermo Italy, this is it.
Next in our Palermo city tour, we visit one of the busiest places in Palermo - Piazza Quattro Canti - the historical center of Palermo. The Quattro Canti Piazza is the meeting point of 2 main streets of Palermo, creating 4 corners, each decorated with a beautiful fountain and a statues on the bottom, one for each season. The 4 corners also have statues representing the 4 Spanish kings of Sicily. Piazza Quattro Canti is a pedestrian area and the 2 main streets that meet here are full of restaurants, hotels and shops.
The next stop in our Palermo tour guide is Cattedrale di Palermo, which is the main Palermo Cathedral. The Cathedral of Palermo showcases different architectural styles and is definitely of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Palermo Cathedral is connected, through two pointed arches, with the Archbishop's Palace, making the church look like a castle, Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
Our next stop is Mercado Del Capo. The Mercado Del Capo is a Bustling street market offering a wide selection of local meats, seafood, produce & Sicilian bites.
Since we were walking the whole morning, we worked out quite an appetite, so we stopped for lunch is a local restaurant - Scola Pasta, where we had some delicious seafood and traditional Italian food.
The next day unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse, so we didn't do much exploring, but we wanted to at least check out the Palermo Port and look for a coffee shop to get a hot coffee to warm us up. After our stroll in the Palermo marina, we ended up going for lunch to Anica Ristorante and Pizza Gourmet.

The Church of San Cataldo is a Catholic church located at Piazza Bellini - Palermo Italy - ECTV

The Church of San Cataldo is a Catholic church located at Piazza Bellini in central Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Erected in 1154 as a notable example of the Arab-Norman architecture which flourished in Sicily under Norman rule on the island, the church is annexed to that of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio. Since the 1930s, it belongs to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.

In 2015, it received status as a World Heritage Site.

Founded around 1160 by admiral Majone di Bari, in the 18th century the church was used as a post office. In the 19th century it was restored and brought back to a form more similar to the original Mediaeval edifice.

It has a rectangular plan with blind arches, partially occupied by windows. The ceiling has three characteristics red, bulge domes (cubole) and Arab-style merlons. The church provides a typical example of the Arab-Norman architecture, which is unique to Sicily. The plan of the church shows the predilection of the Normans for simple and severe forms, derived from their military formation. Moreover, the building shows how international the language of Norman architecture was at the time, as the vocabulary which marks parts of the church, like the bell tower, can be tracked down in coeval buildings like the cathedral of Laon and the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen, both in Northern France, or the cathedral of Durham in England. At the same time, the church shows features shared by Islamic and Byzantine architecture, such as the preference for cubic forms, the blind arches which articulate the external walls of the church and the typical spherical red domes on the roof.

The interior has a nave with two aisles. The naked walls are faced by spolia columns with Byzantine style arcades. The pavement is the original one and has a splendid mosaic decoration. Also original is the main altar.

The old City Wall can be seen running underneath the Church.
