Most people use Flores, as just a jumping off point to explore Tikal. Flores is the capital of Petén. Peten is the largest department in Guatemala. It was on this island that the Maya established NojPetén, their final stronghold in the face of the Spanish conquest. The town of Santa Elena is located on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, and it is connected by a causeway to the island. San Benito is next to Santa Elena. We will try local food on the waterfront of the causeway, wander through the Santa Elena Market, and search for the best place in San Benito, to see the island of Flores from afar. Come with us, as we look for the hidden gems, of Flores.

A ilha das Flores situa-se no Grupo Ocidental do arquipélago dos Açores, sendo a maior das ilhas que compõem aquele Grupo. Ocupa uma área de 141,7 km², na sua maior parte constituída por terreno montanhoso, caracterizado por grandes ravinas e gigantescas falésias. O ponto mais alto da ilha é o Morro Alto, a 914 m de altitude. A população residente é de 3 995 habitantes (2001), repartindo-se pelos concelhos de Santa Cruz e Lajes das Flores. É frequentemente considerada como o ponto mais ocidental da Europa (obviamente fora do continente europeu) e uma das mais belas do arquipélago, cobrindo-se de milhares de hortênsias de cor azul, que dividem os campos ao longo das estradas, nas margens das ribeiras e lagoas.

There is a town on the coast of Guatemala that can only be accessed by boat. The small fishing village of Livingston is not like the rest of the country because here is the home of Garifuna people that are also called Black Caribs.
They are basically descendants of African-Carib populations from Caribbean Islands and they speak their own language, they have their own traditions, food and music!!
In this video Be ready for some dramatic scenes, dance, pain, flirt and a lot of laughs while I'm learning more about this unique culture of Garifuna and their significant differences with Mayan.

Flores is the capital of the Petén, Guatemala's landlocked, northernmost department (province). The population is 13,700 (2003).
Flores is the seat of the municipality of Flores (population 22,600).
Its Catedral Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios y San Pablo Itzá is the cathedral episcopal see of the Apostolic Vicariate of El Petén
The old part of the city is located on an island on Lake Peten Itza, connected to the mainland by a short causeway.

Flores is the capital of the Petén department of Guatemala. The population is 13,700 (2003). Flores is also the seat of the municipality of Flores (population 22,600). The old part of the city is located on an island on Lake Peten Itza, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. On the mainland is the suburb Santa Elena and, to the West, a contiguous municipality San Benito. In Pre-Columbian times, Flores was the Maya city of Nojpetén. Flores is served by Mundo Maya International Airport. Several international flights land here but most stop first at Guatemala City's La Aurora International Airport. The Island is also very well connected by bus, with many companies running overnight buses to Guatemala City. The Itza left the Yucatán region in the 13th century and built the city later known as Tayasal as their capital. They called it Noh (Nohoch) Petén, literally City Island. It was also called Tah Itzá, or Place of the Itzá. It was here, on the island of Flores on the shore of Lake Petén Itzá, that the last independent Maya state held out against the Spanish conquerors. In 1541, Hernán Cortés came to the island, en route to Honduras, but needed to move on and did not try to conquer it. The Spanish did not manage to conquer the island until 1697, when they marched in, attacked via boats, and destroyed it. Those who could flee did so, and many Itzá people hid in the jungle for years. From the ruins of Noh Petén arose the modern city of Flores.
