The coverage area seems better, we can get weather updates and download maps as well as communicate 2 way with others in case we needed help. It's taken the place of our 10 year old SPOT. Expedition Guatemala: Sierra las Minas 2019 Closeout
We spent 6 days in the Sierra las Minas to closeout 2019 and to celebrate the beginning of 2020. We hiked various trails which were so breathtakingly captivating. Guatemala (#06): Castile San Felipe
Early in the 16th Century, trade was established between Guatemala and Spain via what was then called the Golfo Dulce. Constant attacks by pirates in the Gulf of Mexico and incursions into Guatemala through the Rio Dulce made it necessary to defend the entrance to Lake Izabal where warehouses had been set up for goods entering from or leaving for Spain. In 1595 the Governor informed King Philip II of Spain of the attacks suffered and it was decided to build a tower equipped with twelve artillery pieces and twelve soldiers. The tower was called the Sande Tower.
In 1604 after the first tower was destroyed, Captain Don Pedro de Bustamante, from whom it took its name, the Bustamante Tower, rebuilt it. It was around this time that the port at Santo Tomas de Castilla was founded. By 1640 the pirates intensified their attacks in this area. Some rather famous (or infamous) pirates were involved in the attacks on the Rio Dulce including: Diego the Mulatto, Lieutenant of Pegleg Anthony Shirly. Shirly was a pirate of aristocratic birth, called the Adventurous Gentleman, the Highwayman from Jamaica and Puerto Rico. 1651 saw Judge Lara y Mogrovejo rebuilt the fort a second time, calling it San Felipe de Lara Castle in honor of the king and himself.
By 1655 pirate attacks decreased and the fort became a prison and place of exile because of the harsh climate. Between 1660 and 1688 the fort was rebuilt three times and peace returned to the region. By 1736 three additional lookout points were completed and the fort remained in use until its function and purpose declined in the late 1800s. In the 1950s the fort, suffering severe deterioration, was restored and cannons, found upriver, were returned. Today it is a museum offering insight into piracy.

Visite las Ruinas de Guaytan.
Guaytan es un importante sitio arqueologico del Periodo Preclasico Tardio Maya.
Localizado cercano a San Agustin Acasaguastlan en las montanas del oriente Guatemalteco.
Su importancia la denota la existencia de bancos de Jade y el trabajo de Jade encontrado en El Agüilucho, Chucunhueso y otros.
Hay 142 Monticulos, 3 templos, dos campos de pelota, gran cantidad de tumbas que datan algunas hasta 200 AC.
Tambien es de resaltar que existen 5 monumentos esculpidos y 14 tumbas elaboradas incluyendo un Arco Maya en la entrada.
En el sitio se ha recolectado gran cantidad de ceramica, conchas de mar (Oceano Pacifico) y por su puesto objetos de Jade y Obsidiana que se pueden apreciar en el museo de Estanzuela, Zacapa.

#shorts Una clave para saber como viajar a Guatemala es visitar Antigua. Hay muchas ruinas en este ciudad colonial pero hay una que es la mejor. En este video verán como recorrer ruinas Catedral de Antigua Guatemala en 2022.
Antigua Guatemala queda a solo 1 hora de la capital y es el destino turístico principal del país. En esta ciudad no se puede reconstruir, ya que es un Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Es por eso que encontramos muchas ruinas. Lo mejor de todo es que algunas se pueden visitar. Parte de como recorrer Antigua es ir a algunas de ellas, pero especialmente es necesario ir a ver como es la catedral de Antigua Guatemala. Lo tienen muy bien cuidado y solo cuesta $3 hacer el recorrido. No toma ni media hora así que no hay excusa para no hacerlo. Es increíble ver las esculturas talladas en la piedra y tratar de imaginarse como era antes. Si vienen a Antigua tienen que saber como pasear en Catedral de Antigua Guatemala.
