Places to visit in Latvia/

Places to visit in Latvia/

It is dedicated to commemorate the freedom fights of the Livs (the indigenous people of the lower Daugava region) in the 1206 revolt led by Ako from Mārtiņsala (Holme) against the crusaders. Mārtiņsala was a significant centre of the Livs from the 10th to the 13th century; now the island lies below the water level of the power station reservoir. Ako was killed in a battle, and his head was sent to Riga as proof of victory. This is also a place where the first human settlement (Salaspils Laukskola) of late Palaeolithic reindeer hunters was discovered by archaeologists in the early 1970s. A memorial sign for Ako was arranged in 1994, reconstructed in 2013. The site was designed by sculptor Ģ. Burvis; landscape design of the territory established in 2014.

Latvia (/ˈlɑːtviə/ or /ˈlætviə/ (About this soundlisten); Latvian: Latvija [ˈlatvija], Livonian: Lețmō), officially known as the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika, Livonian: Lețmō Vabāmō), is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe.[13] Since its independence, Latvia has been referred to as one of the Baltic states. It is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast, and shares a maritime border with Sweden to the west. Latvia has 1,957,200 inhabitants[14] and a territory of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi).[15] The country has a temperate seasonal climate.[16] The Baltic Sea moderates climate, although it has four distinct seasons and snowy winters.

After centuries of Swedish, Polish and Russian rule, a rule mainly executed by the Baltic German aristocracy, the Republic of Latvia was established on 18 November 1918 when it broke away from the Russian Empire and declared independence in the aftermath of World War I.[2] However, by the 1930s the country became increasingly autocratic after the coup in 1934 establishing an authoritarian regime under Kārlis Ulmanis. The country's de facto independence was interrupted at the outset of World War II, beginning with Latvia's forcible incorporation into the Soviet Union, followed by the invasion and occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941, and the re-occupation by the Soviets in 1944 (Courland Pocket in 1945) to form the Latvian SSR for the next 45 years.

The peaceful Singing Revolution, starting in 1987, called for Baltic emancipation from Soviet rule and condemning the Communist regime's illegal takeover.[17] It ended with the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia on 4 May 1990 and restoring de facto independence on 21 August 1991.[18] Latvia is a democratic sovereign state, parliamentary republic and performs well in the United Nations Human Development Index.[19] Its capital Riga served as the European Capital of Culture in 2014. Latvian is the official language. Latvia is a unitary state, divided into 119 administrative divisions, of which 110 are municipalities and nine are cities.[20] Latvians and Livonians are the indigenous people of Latvia.[15] Latvian and Lithuanian are the only two surviving Baltic languages.

My 50th Country! Riga, Latvia

Instead of flying or taking a bus from Vilnius to Riga, I found this minivan tour from Traveller Tours that goes to places I would never get to see since the bus would just drive right through to Riga. I was most interested to see the Hill of Crosses and it’s hundreds of thousands of crosses, I found out about this from Kara and Nate’s video, looked so cool. It happened that I was the only one on the tour, so the driver customized the tour for me and got me access to the best spots to fly the drone and we skipped some of the more touristy parts, very cool.

Once I got to Riga, I did a free walking tour, met some people on the tour and hung out after and got some dinner. Not much time in Riga, but it was a nice end to my 48 day around the world trip.

Riga In Your Pocket - Salaspils Concentration Camp

Riga In Your Pocket visits the Salaspils concentration camp. The memorial site of a concentration camp where the Nazis murdered thousands of Jews and other ethnic groups, including Latvians, is outside of Riga city limits, but worth the trip. On the walls of a concrete structure, which now serves as the gateway to the camp, the words 'The earth moans beyond this gate' are inscribed. Half a dozen monumental statues symbolising hope and defiance are located here. A metronome eerily ticks in memory of the victims and the foundations of the barracks are still visible. Take bus No.18 from the Central Market to the last stop, Dārziņi-2, and then carefully walk across the motorway to the memorial.

Salaspils camp - one of Europe’s largest monument complexes / Symbol of life to death museum

The Salaspils Memorial Ensemble was erected where an extended police prison and labour correctional camp (Erweitertes Polizeigefängnis und Arbeitserziehungslager) of National Socialistic Germany was located from 1941 to 1945. It was built by deported Jews from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The camp imprisoned Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian civilians and military personal, as well as transit prisoners, including small children from Latgale, Belarus and Russia. Over the various periods that the Salaspils camp was in operation, more than 20,000 individuals found themselves there. Because of heavy labour, illness, starvation and inhumane treatment and punishments, at least 2,000 to 3,000 people died in the camp.
n 1967, one of Europe’s largest monument complexes commemorating victims of Nazism was opened on the camp territory. The memorial creates a symbol of the border between life and death with a 100 metre-long concrete wall, on which is written – “Beyond these gates the land groans”. There are also seven concrete sculptures: “Mother”, “The Unbroken”, “The humuliated”, “Protest”, “Red Front”, “Solidarity”,“The Oath”. The Salaspils Memorial Ensemble is part of Latvia’s cultural canon. An exhibition is constructed at the gates of the monument. Sculptors Ļ. Bukovskis, O. Skarainis, J. Zariņš; architects – G. Asaris, O. Ostenbergs, I. Strautmanis, O. Zakamennijs.

In 2008, the German POW cemetery was opened on the memorial grounds.

The new exposition, which was opened February 2018, is open every day 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (April – October); 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (November – March).

The Salaspils Memorial Ensemble is located about 5 km from Salaspils Railway Station and Tourism Information Centre.

Baltic roadtrip Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania | Stockholm, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius | Cinematic video

This is a cinematic video report of our 8 day trip to the Baltic States in May2022. We actually started our trip in Stockholm to meet some friends, before heading of Tallinn. The weather was colder than I expected, and because of drone regulations, I could not fly everywhere I wanted. Still, I was glad I brought my mini 2 because luckely there were some places I could still fly.

All in all, I loved my time in the Baltics - the trip could not have gone any better. Plenty of things to see and do so don't hesitate to go there if you can!

SALASPILS | 4K UHD drone flight | Bird’s eye view | DJI Mavic mini 2

This is my 4K UHD drone footage of the SALASPILS that is a satellite city of Riga, the capital of Latvia. Despite the fact that people lived in its surroundings for more than 800 years, a lot of its cityscape has appeared only during the 20th century. There are a lot of Soviet era residential buildings seen on this video that were built partly to accommodate the personnel of the hydroelectric plant located right next to the town.

This has been a DJI Mavic mini drone that was used to capture 4K 30 fps bird’s eye view footage. Filmed in 2021.
