Dominica (Things to do - Places to Visit) - DOMINICA Top Tourist Places
A country in the Caribbean

Dominica is a mountainous Caribbean island nation with natural hot springs and tropical rainforests. Morne Trois Pitons National Park is home to the volcanically heated, steam-covered Boiling Lake.

The park also encompasses sulphur vents, the 65m-tall Trafalgar Falls and narrow Titou Gorge. To the west is Dominica’s capital, Roseau, with colorful timber houses and botanic gardens.

How To Get To Dominica | Arrival In Dominica | What To Do | Where To Stay

In this vlog, we fly from New York City to the island of Dominica, which is known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean and is located in the Southeastern Caribbean. This vlog will give you some ideas of what to do in Dominica, either when you first arrive or throughout your visit, and it will also give you a fabulous idea of where to stay in Dominica.

* Please DO NOT CONFUSE DOMINICA WITH THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC*

There are currently no non-stop options from New York to Dominica. The most direct options are to fly American Airlines from New York to Miami, then American Eagle from Miami to Dominica, OR to fly JetBlue from New York to San Juan, then Silver Air from San Juan to Dominica. To get to Dominica, we flew American Airlines from JFK to MIA, then from MIA to DOM. We chose this option because American arrives in Dominica at 1:30ish in the afternoon while the Silver Air connection offered through JetBlue arrives in Dominica after 5 PM. Since we already planned a short stay on the island, we wanted to maximize our time as soon as we landed, and we did pretty much that, as we got picked up from the airport and went right into a tour we booked through Waitukubuli Adventure Tour Company. Their tours have wonderful reviews, and they are often the company that TripAdvisor and Viator use for the tours they offer in Dominica. As you can see in the video, our tour included Trafalgar Falls, the Botanical Gardens, and Morne Bruce lookout point, then our arrival day tour concluded at our resort, Jungle Bay! Jungle Bay is a fantastic resort with a truly inspiring story, past, present, and my guess is future also! We look forward to sharing with you our experience from staying at Jungle Bay.

Although this is not a cruise video, cruisers, please listen up because you may choose to visit this island by cruise ship! Yes, you can cruise to Dominica! We had previously booked one MSC and two Royal Caribbean cruises that were scheduled to port in Dominica, but those plans changed for various reasons, from itinerary changes due to Hurricane Maria, to cruise cancellation in March 2020 because of the obvious, and to itinerary changes earlier this year. So, for this May 2022 visit, we decided to fly to Dominica and spend a long weekend there. Yes, that’s right! We don’t only cruise, we fly to our vacation destinations and enjoy land vacations from time to time too.

Let us know if you have any questions about our experience in Dominica, or questions about our cruises and/or traveling in general.

Indian River Tour in Dominica

While in Dominica, our guest host SocaDread takes a ride down the Indian River, The Indian River got its name because Kalinago (Carib Indian) lived along its banks and used it as an access route to the Caribbean Sea. The river was important to their livelihood as they used it to transport goods for trade with sailors and along the island chain. With its coastal wetland dominated by the spectacular buttressed Bwa Mang trees, the Indian River is among the most picturesque of Dominica’s 365 rivers.

We travelled with Denroy Clarke from Triple D Tours in his hand-oared riverboats where he showed us various types of wildlife and plant life along the swampy river bank.

Did you know that several scenes from the blockbuster film series Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed here? And when you finished you have to go to the Bush Bar and try the signature rum drink and some great Dominican/Creole cuisine.

Roseau before and after Hurricane Maria in Dominica, floods, surge, winds, damage,
Hurricane Maria, enormous damage in Dominica ,floods and collapsed houses in RoseauDominica[edit]
Rainfall ahead of the hurricane caused several landslides in Dominica as water levels across the island began to rise by the afternoon of September 18.[23] At 21:35 ATS that day (1:35 UTC, September 19), the core of Maria moved directly over Dominica with wind speeds of 160 mph (260 km/h), or Category 5 intensity. The extreme winds blew the roofs off many houses, including the official residence of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who required rescue when his home began to flood.[24] Reports from Roseau indicate total devastation, with half the village flooded, cars stranded, and stretches of residential area flattened.[25][26] Most of the island was left without cellular, radio, or internet service. Skerrit called the devastation mind boggling and indicated immediate priority was to rescue survivors rather than assess damage.[27] As of September 19, according to an update from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), there have been 6 deaths on Dominica as a result of the hurricane, based on preliminary information.[21]

Dominica (/dəˈmɪˌnɪkə/ or /ˌdɒmɪˈniːkə/; French: Dominique; Island Carib: Wai‘tu kubuli), officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is a sovereign island country.[8] The capital, Roseau, is located on the leeward side of the island. It is part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island lies south-southeast of Guadeloupe and northwest of Martinique. Its area is 750 km2 (290 sq mi), and the highest point is Morne Diablotins, at 1,447 m (4,747 ft) in elevation. The population was 71,293 at the 2011 census.[5]

The island was originally inhabited by the Kalinago and later colonised by Europeans, predominantly by the French from the 1690s to 1763. Columbus is said to have passed the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493, and the island's name is derived from the Latin for Sunday. Great Britain took possession in 1763 after its defeat of France in the Seven Years' War, and it gradually established English as the official language. The island republic gained independence in 1978.

Its name is pronounced with stress falling either on second syllable of the word, after the Latin word dŏmĭnĭcă lordly, or on the third syllable, after the French name Dominique. Dominica has been nicknamed the Nature Isle of the Caribbean for its natural environment.[9] It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, called Boiling Lake. The island has lush mountainous rainforests, and is the home of many rare plants, animals, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The Sisserou parrot, also known as the imperial amazon and found only on Dominica, is the island's national bird and featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy depends on tourism and agriculture.
