As my adventures on the Caribbean island of Grenada continue, we’re hitting up the spice market in its capital city, St. George’s! Come with me on this exciting adventure as we find out why Grenada is sometimes called the Spice Island!

???????? Trinidad & Tobago Travel Series:

ST. GEORGE’S SPICE MARKET: Here, we met spice vendors and handicraft vendors selling items like handmade sandals and masks. I tried ginger wine, sea moss wine, roasted ginger nuts, honey roasted nuts, sorrel juice, ginger beer, and a sea moss milkshake!

BB’S CRAB BACKS: At this seaside restaurant, I met BB and had a delicious Grenadian feast of rice and peas, goat curry, crab backs, bake, fried plantains, papadum, and mango chutney. It was incredible, but the star of the show was the tender and fatty goat curry…or is it curry goat?

GRENADA TRAVEL GUIDE - WHAT TO SEE IN 1 DAY - 4K - 2023

Grenada is a Caribbean country comprising a main island, also called Grenada, and smaller surrounding islands. Dubbed the “Spice Isle,” the hilly main island is home to numerous nutmeg plantations. It’s also the site of the capital, St. George’s, whose colourful homes, Georgian buildings and early-18th-century Fort George overlook narrow Carenage Harbour. After exploring much of Grenada, there was still an element of the culture that I hadn’t yet touched: the local Rasta culture. Rasta culture is prevalent throughout the Caribbean, and I couldn’t wait to dive in and see what it’s like here on The Spice Island, Grenada!

RAS GINGA: I met up with local Rasta man and viral social media sensation Ras Ginga on his property, where he showed me some of the fruits he gathers from the surrounding jungle. They include papaya, bananas, coconut, breadfruit, sugarcane, and mammee apples. He also makes homemade sugarcane wine and loves the Bob Marley and the Wailers song “One Love.”

RASTAS: Elsewhere, I met more Rastas making chocolate from cacao beans. They also grow spearmint, banana and coconut trees, nutmeg, and cinnamon trees! I tried some of the spearmint and a coconut, which was filled with refreshing coconut water and a bit of delicious jelly!

As my time in Grenada wound to a close, I ended my trop with a traditional Grenadian breakfast. Come with me on one last food adventure on the Spice Island, Grenada!

???????? Trinidad & Tobago Travel Series:

FRIDAY BAR: Here, I met up with Brian, who prepared fried jack fish, fried tuna roe, farine shark, salad, and fried oil down breadfruit & dumplings for us. It was a true Grenadian breakfast. The crispy fried fish was amazing, and I loved the shark and bake!

WEST INDIES BEER COMPANY: Here, I toured their facility with their brewmaster, Robbie, and tried a flight of four of their best beers: The Black Rock, the Hawk Belgian tripel, their Winward IPA, and Humdinger lager. The Hawk was very light, while the Winward and Humdinger were tropical and easy to drink. My favorite was the Black Rock dark IPA!

Christopher Columbus arrived on Grenada in 1498. The island was already inhabited by the Carib Indians, who had migrated from the South American mainland, killing or enslaving the peaceful Arawaks who were already inhabitants there. The Amerindians called their island Camerhogue, but Columbus renamed it Concepción. However, passing Spanish sailors found its lush green hills so evocative of Andalusia that they rejected this name in favor of Granada.

There is so much to see in Grenada ... historic forts, lakes, waterfalls, spice estates - some of them still operational today, spice gardens, floral gardens (Grenada won its 7th Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in London in 2009), rum distilleries (with generous samples), plantation houses, Amerindian petroglyphs, etc.
