Half-Day Trip To Colon from Panama City, Panama

When you visit Panama I think most people want to see both oceans. The Pacific is easy because that's Panama City, but the Atlantic can be a challenge.

Colon is Panama's 2nd largest city and it's on the Atlantic side. But it is considered unsafe and tourists are strongly advised against going on their own. However, many guided bus tours are available.

I hate taking guided bus tours because you always end up wasting part of your valuable day going to places you don't care about or being dragged into jewelry stores, tea houses, etc.

Despite all the warnings, I decided to go to Colon on my own and use a local guide to visit the places I really wanted to see. Buses leave all the time to Colon from Panama City and if you time your day (or half day) correctly you can return to Panama City on a near-empty Panama Canal Railway train at about 5:00 PM which affords great views of the canal ($25 one way in 2019).

In summary, I took a bus from Panama City at noon to the Colon Bus Terminal and immediately got into a cab (very important - you must immediately get into a cab - but they are everywhere), went to the Radisson Hotel ($5 fare, 10 blocks) where I hired a guide who took me to the places I wanted to see and dropped me at the train station. The whole 6 hour turnaround cost me $110 and I did only what I wanted while avoiding any danger in Colon. I'm sure this could be done cheaper depending on how much time you want to spend and your negotiating skills, etc. I paid my guide $50 plus a tip for about 2-3 hours but it can probably be done cheaper. But by hiring a guide at the best hotel in town vs. using cab drivers I felt like I got a better experience.

I even had some time to eat a late lunch back at the Radisson Hotel before going to the train station (although snack food is available on the train).

Have fun visiting Colon. There are other attractions I didn't see, like the Colon Free Zone (shopping), and a fort and other historical areas nearby.

We went to the TRASH TOWN of PANAMA - Our Portobelo Story

Welcome to our channel! So happy to have you!

In this episode we are going from Panama City to Portobelo, where we originally wanted to board a little boat to cross over to Colombia. The Boat got canceled, we went anyway. And what we found in Portobelo just put us in shock. Trash EVERYWHERE! In the Streets, between Towns, in the Bay, on the Beach, even in the Mangroves! Panama has a real trash problem, which starts very early. There seems to be barely consciousness about environmental impacts of throwing your trash anywhere. It made us sad, mad, angry and speechless how you can live in paradise and treat it like that. But we guess that’s a general theme on earth, isn’t it? Please people of Panama, visitors and government, wake up and don’t treat your country like it’s a massive landfill - everywhere ????

Like and subscribe to never miss an episode again! ????
Thank you so much for joining our adventures!

COLON PANAMA

CRUISIN IN COLON

Recorded in The Province of Panama Oeste, Panama. Driving through Panama Oeste can be a pleasant experience when you drive outside rush hours where the traffic is far more bearable and acceptable. Otherwise, get ready to have your patience tested because Traffic jams are no joke here.

???? The Province of West Panama (Panama Oeste) is the country's newest province, having been created on January 1, 2014. Previously, these five districts were part of the province of Panama. The new province resides just west of the Panama Canal (Canal de Panama) and shares a border with the province of Panama to the east; Gulf of Panama to the south; Cocle province to the west; and Colon province to the north.

The first thing that comes to mind when talking about West Panama (Panama Oeste) province are beach houses and weekends trips with friends. But more than a touristic place, this province is becoming from the last 10 years, Panama’s second most important city, with the higher concentration of population and businesses.

In West Panama (Panama Oeste) province there’s a wide variety of beaches to choose from, the most famous ones are in Punta Chame district. If going South, there’s options for beaches for the more extreme tastes. Is common to see windsurfing, kiteboarding and regular surfing in these waters. If heading North, is more common to find people just enjoying the sun and the quietness of the sea to spend a nice day.

San Carlos and Santa Clara are two other very well-known towns that have entrance to the beach. In these towns lots of foreigners and Panamanians have beach houses which makes this beaches be more private than the ones in Chame. In fact, to some beaches you are only allowed in if you are a resident or go with a resident in your trip. These towns are also popular for hosting many visitors, to which they offer camps for big groups and hotels with attractive prices.

Coronado is the last most relevant town when it comes to beach houses. This option offers more sophisticated places than the towns mentioned previously and is usually the first stop for all traveling through Panama Republic.

West Panama (Panama Oeste) is basically considered an extension of Panama City, because of its jobs opportunities and house projects offered, mainly in La Chorrera. For locals, unless having a job in the city, it’s not really necessary to leave, since this province has everything needed. This province also has one of the biggest malls in the country, so visitors definitely don’t need to leave West Panama for buying essentials. This province has everything it needs.

The province's capital is the city of La Chorrera, and the province is divided into five districts: Arraiján, Capira, Chame, La Chorrera, and San Carlos.
