Stockholm has gorgeous nature, an exciting history dating back to the 1200s, and lots of free culture to explore. In this list I'm including a wide range of experiences, for all seasons, and for all kinds of visitors.
The places included in this list are:
- Visit Östermalmshallen, a lovely food market
- Explore the island of Långholmen, which used to be a prison island
- Attend open sessions at Parliament - or just enjoy the view
- Kungsträdgården has events and shows and lots of things to enjoy - all for free
- The island of Royal Djurgården is gorgeous. Don't miss the Rosendal Castle!
- See the world's longest art gallery...in the form of the Stockholm subway art
- Check out all the free museums at Skeppsholmen, such as the Museum of Modern Art. Or just walk around and see all the historical boats anchored here
- Marvel at the 18th century Drottningholm Castle and its surrounding garden
- Pay a visit to the Medieval Museum...without paying anything at all

Top 10 WINTER Things To Do in Stockholm | December to March
Stockholm is a beautiful city in the summer, but many people want to experience it in winter as well. What is there to do in Stockholm in winter?
In this video I present the top 10 things to do if you're visiting Stockholm between December and March. Snow is not guaranteed, but it will definitely be cold, so make sure you dress appropriately for the season!
The things listed, including the various places I mention, are the following:
- Ice skating in Kungsträdgården, a very centrally located park
- Skiing at Hammarbybacken, which you can reach by tram from Gullmarsplan
- Check out the viewpoint at Monteliusvägen, on Södermalm. You can walk there from Slussen. Also, I mention Skinnarviksberget - it lies a 10 minute walk to the west of Monteliusvägen
- Rent a sauna and take an icy plunge at Hellasgården. Website:
- Winter kayaking at Vaxholm. Website:
- Walk in one of the many parks in Stockholm. This video shows you clips from Rålambshovsparken and Kronobergsparken, and I mention Vasaparken, Humlegården, Tantolunden and Royal Djurgården as well
- Swedish fika is a great thing on a cold winter's day! Especially if you're here around semla season. I'm showing you the centrally located cafe Vete-Katten. Website:
- Warming up at a spa is highly recommended. The places I mention include Centralbadet, The Nest, Selma City Spa and Yasuragi
- A tour to the archipelago in winter. The two biggest boat companies are Waxholmsbolaget ( and Strömma (
- Finally, I of course have to recommend visiting Stockholm around Christmas time! In the video I mention Christmas markets at Gamla stan and Skansen, as well as animatronic displays outside of the NK shopping centre. Top 10 Things in Stockholm UNDER €30 | Budget Travel Guide
I've already covered the top 10 free things to do in Stockholm, but in this video I list the top 10 things to do for less than €30 when you're visiting the capital of Sweden!
Sweden is expensive, and Stockholm is the most expensive city in the country. But that doesn't mean that everything costs a fortune. I've selected the top 10 things to do if you want to stay on a small budget. This list includes:
- Java Whiskers, Sweden's first cat cafe
- Haga Butterfly Ocean (Fjärilshuset), where you can see a thousand free-flying butterflies
- Visit the Royal Castle, the official residence of the King of Sweden
- A trip to Sigtuna, Sweden's oldest town, just north of Stockholm
- Retro gaming and arcades at N3rds Bar and HEY STHLM
- Rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board to see Stockholm from a different perspective
- Museums! There are tons of great museums in the city, and these are some of my top picks
- The ICEBAR, the world's first permanent ice bar
- Skansen is the world's oldest open-air museum as well as a zoo, and its well worth a visit
- Finally, a trip to the archipelago is a must if you're visiting Stockholm
All of these things can be done for less than €30, or 300 Swedish crowns. I also list a number of honorable mentions that are not included for various reasons. In some cases because they aren't specific to Stockholm - and in some cases because you can just barely find a ticket for €30 on the very cheapest of days. Those honorable mentions include, for example, the Gröna Lund amusement park and escape rooms.

1. Vasa Museum
A maritime museum located on the island of Djurgården. The most visited museum in Scandinavia. Displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged.
2. Skansen
The first open-air museum and zoo in Sweden. Located on the island Djurgården. Was founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius to show the way of life in the different parts of Sweden before the industrial era.
3. Djurgården
An island in central Stockholm. Home to historical buildings and monuments, museums, galleries. One of the Stockholmers' favorite recreation areas and tourist destination alike, attracting over 10 million visitors per year.
4. ABBA: The Museum
An interactive exhibition about the pop-group ABBA. Opened in May 2013. Inspired by the Beatles museum in Liverpool, England, Is the permanent home for the traveling ABBAWORLD exhibit that toured Europe and Australia in 2009-2011.
5. Gröna Lund
A 15-acre amusement park. Located on the seaward side of the Djurgården island. Has over 30 attractions. A popular venue for concerts during the summer. Was founded in 1883 by James Schultheiss.
6. Stockholm Palace
The official residence and major royal palace of the Swedish monarch. Located on Stadsholmen, in Gamla stan. Used for representative purposes by the King whilst performing his duties as the head of state.
7. Riddarholm Church
The burial church of the Swedish monarchs. Located on the island of Riddarholmen, close to the Royal Palace. One of the oldest buildings in Stockholm, parts of it dating to the late 13th century, when it was built as a greyfriars monastery.
8. Bergianska trädgården
A botanical garden located in the Frescati area. Was founded through a donation in 1791 by the historian and antiquarian Bengt Bergius and his brother Peter Jonas. Was moved to its current location in 1885.
9. Riddarholmen
The Knights' Islet - a small islet. Houses a number of private palaces dating from the 17th century. The western end of the island gives a magnificent panoramic and photogenic view of the bay Riddarfjärden.
10. Nobel Museum
A museum devoted to circulate information on the Nobel Prize, Nobel laureates from 1901 to present, and the life of the founder of the prize, Alfred Nobel (1833-1896).
