SKOKLOSTER CASTLE CASTELLO DI SKOKLOSTER SKOKLOSTERI LOSS SWEDEN SVEZIA

Skokloster Castle
Skokloster Castle is a Swedish Baroque castle built between 1654 and 1676 by Carl Gustaf Wrangel, located on a peninsula of Lake Mälaren between Stockholm and Uppsala. It became a state museum in the 1970s and displays collections of paintings, furniture, textiles and tableware as well as books and weapons.

The Castle & collections
Take a step back in history and into the Great Times

Skokloster Castle is the largest private palace ever built in Sweden. The architecture, the intact interiors and the exquisite objects make the castle one of Europe's premier baroque castle.

History

The farm is famous since the 1100s. The present castle was built 1654-1676 by Count and Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Wrangel during the most flourishing period of the Swedish superpower.

The drawings of the castle were mainly prepared by German architect Caspar Vogel, and were further processed by Jean de la Vallée, Mathias Spieler and Nicodemus Tessin, etc. The castle is built in Baroque style.

However, the castle never came to be completed without the construction stopped when the construction worker Wrangel died in 1676.
When the wrangel's death came to the workers at the castle, they immediately put down the work because they suspected that wages would be lost. Neither the planned facilities against the water and the magnificent gardens were completed.
A fideic committee

After the death of Carl Gustaf Wrangel, ownership of the Brahe family passed away when Wrangel's daughter Margareta Juliana married the National Council and the Admiral of Nils Brahe Dy in 1699. At his death in 1699, widow Margareta Juliana instituted a fide commission for the son-General Major Count Abraham Brahe (1669-1728 ). Skokloster was then in the family of Brahe's possession until its empire expired in 1930.
Then the castle passed through inheritance to the family of von Essen.

In 1967, Skokloster Castle was bought with the approximately 50,000 inventories of the Swedish state.
The castle became a state-of-the-art museum and is today included in the state-owned state museums.

Collections

In the collections, magnificent practical objects and trivial things are combined. In the extensive collections there are a variety of furniture, handicrafts, textiles, weapons and books from the 17th century. In addition, there are objects from the castle's later owners in the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. Better than most places we know who have manufactured, used and admired the well-preserved décor and the objects.

At Skokloster there are three weapon collections; the Wrangelska, Braheska and Bielkeska. Throughout the years, the owners have collected art, textiles, handicrafts, books and ceramics from the period 1550 to 1850.

The banquet hall, which would become one of Northern Europe's largest, was never completed. It was left as the construction site it was; complete with tools and building stands that can still be considered on site.

When the state took over the castle, extensive renovations were initiated under the guidance of architect Ove Hidemark. During the restoration, old craft traditions were used, and the handbooks Wrangel left behind were utilized. The castle is now building memory.
