Ruteng spiderweb field, Labuan Bajo, Ende, Flores road trip, Indonesia #48vlog
We have left Wae Rebo Village and are in pursuit of a cosy place to stay for the next couple of nights, however driving around the neighbouring villages we couldn’t find anything we liked so we decided to make the 4 hr long journey to Ruteng for a good Wi-Fi connection some comfort and a hot shower, also with seeing the spiderweb field in mind.
After a couple of nights relaxing in Ruteng we drove to Labuan Bajo as we had to return our bike. From there we decided to take a bus with Gunung Mas all the way to Ende. In hindsight we should have tried to find a bike rental that would let us drop the bike off in Ende as Ricardo from our home stay said this can be done, so for anyone thinking of doing a road trip on a bike through Flores maybe keep that in mind.
It took us in total 12hrs from Labuan Bajo to Ende with the bus, which would have been totally fine specially for 200k pp however the never ending winding roads through the mountains (with spectacular views might I add) were a little too much on Phil’s belly as he can get motion sickness…he powered through but in the future would probably prefer to drive himself.
Ende is a cute town with great views to the mountains, they don’t seem to see many western tourists as a lot of people on the street would come up and talk to us, in general they were all super friendly.

Leaving at 2am we depart from Maumere and make our way to Mt. Kelimutu national park to capture the sunrise over these stunning volcanic crater lakes on the island of Flores Indonesia.
After capturing sunrise we then travel across the island to Koka beach.

The BEST way to slow travel across Flores, Indonesia, is by taking a road trip! Once you head east out of Labuan Bajo you will wind your way up the gorgeous mountainsides. In this episode, leave the ocean behind for higher grounds. We made many stops during our 6-hour road trip: the Campang To’e Melo Village, our first taste of Kopi Flores (coffee), delicious Indonesian lunch, and satay in Ruteng! Our kids love Indonesian food, especially the satay (sate/ grilled meat on a stick). That night we decided to stay at the convent (a first for us!). Jonathan will take you on a walking tour of the Ruteng Manggarai, so you can catch a glimpse of the sites and sounds of this bustling city. You will get to meet our amazing driver, Sipri, and some of the local people who were curious about our travels. We love exploring new places, we love nature adventures, we really love food, but most of all, we love learning about the stories of a place through the people we meet along the way.
