HOLLAND: Ferryboat Nieuwe Waterweg (Maassluis↔Rozenburg)

The 'New Waterway' river' is a busy shipping route since it is the primary access to one of the busiest ports in the world, the Europoort of Rotterdam.

There are no bridges or tunnels across the Nieuwe Waterweg, which is the artificial mouth of the river Rhine.

The ferry leaves every 20 minutes from Maassluis and Rozenburg, and during rush hour every 10 minutes.

The (double-ended) ferryboat Staeldiep from 1970 has a capacity of 39 passenger cars and up to 380 persons.

Tulips growth and Dutch prosperity - The Netherlands from above

What opportunities does our prosperity offer? The Netherlands know the highest density of holiday parks in the world. It is a portrayal of our prosperity and endless redevelopment resulting in leisure. But can we also achieve growth by thinking beyond the products? This seems to work out in waste management. Waste streams and even our faeces is converted into energy. In fact, we are going back to an old phenomenon: for example, the annual stretcher race from Workum to the Bulbs region relieves the former ship transport from manure from Friesland, which has been used for centuries to grow bulbs on the poor soil in the Bollen Region. In order to bring the bulbs in perfect condition, they need this manure, but also the correct groundwater level is also important. One man, the crane man, is busy on a daily basis, making sure to maintain a perfect balance.

The Netherlands from above shows us a country from a spectacular perspective. From the sky it is possible to see how the Netherlands changes through the seasons, and how in parallel they form the determining moments of our own life cycle. Through data visuals, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, the second series of the Netherlands from above outlines an image of how time has changed our country and how we move in it. The way we live from day to day, and from generation to generation in this country reflects our resilient mentality. The Netherlands from above season 2 tells us the story of seeing and taking opportunities, falling and rising up again, reinventing the wheel again and again. Where the first series was an ode to the makeable Netherlands, this second series is an ode to our resilience.

Maassluis was founded circa 1340 as a settlement next to a lock (in Dutch: sluis) in the sea barrier between the North Sea and Rotterdam. Originally Maeslandsluys, it was part of Maesland.
During World War II, the working population was transferred to Germany for the war industry. Maassluis' ancient church was hit by allied bombers.

Maassluis

Roadtrip Landtong Rozenburg (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)

The Landtong Rozenburg is part of the former island of Rozenburg. During the construction of the Caland Canal and Europoort, a large part of the island was excavated and the headland got its current shape; a small overview with a length of about ten kilometers that covers 60 hectares.

It is the first green enclave left to spontaneous landscape development in the Rotterdam port area. From this headland you can see Maassluis, oil storage companies, harbours, the Caland Canal and the busy Nieuwe Waterweg, among other things. At the most descending point there is a lookout hill with a view of the Splitsingsdam in the Maas estuary, the Maasvlakte and Hoek van Holland. The area is accessible by car, there is a cycle path and there are walking paths.

The area is owned by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Rijkswaterstaat and the Municipality of Rotterdam, and is managed by Stadsbeheer Rotterdam

Dashcam Noordzeeweg vanaf Landtong De Punt Rozenburg

How The Narrow Canal Works With The Wind Wall

Rozenburg wind wall in Netherlands is a wall built to block wind from entering the Calandkanaal and ease the passage of large cargo ships through the narrow canal, particularly through the Calandbrug bridge. The wall blocks about 75% of the wind and allows the ships to pass smoothly. The wall is 1600 meters long and it is made up of 125 rectangular and cylindrical slabs, each about 25 meters tall and 18 meters wide.

Wind Wall Allows Large Ships to Navigate a Narrow Canal
A small coastal town in the western Netherlands is plagued by high winds which make navigating the town's narrow channels difficult for large ships. Rozenburg, South Holland has been growing increasingly in the last 50 years, with the port becoming key in the Netherland's shipping industry. This has led engineers to give particular significance to making sure ships have safe passage through the narrow waters. As barges and transport ships have grown larger, the narrow Calland Canal has grown too small to navigate unless under good conditions. Engineers devised the innovative solution of building a series of semicircular columns forming a wind wall that reduces wind speed by up to 75% in the area.

The city proposed the construction of a wind wall in the mid-1980s and called upon Martin Strujis and artist Frans de Wit to create a structure that wasn't an eyesore. The wall appears less like a functional work of engineering and more like a large scale sculpture and that was exactly the intent. The wall is both aesthetically pleasing to the eye yet a great feat of engineering in what it accomplishes.
The semicircular slabs that make up the wall are 25 meters tall and 18 meters wide spaced equidistantly apart. As the wall nears the Bridge of Calandberg near the north end of the canal, the slabs turn into square flat walls spaced more closely and on a rising embankment. The use of square slabs along with the embankment create a better barrier for ships giving them even greater stability as they navigate under the bridge.

Driving to Zeeland (from South-Holland) - island 'Neeltje Jans'

Zeeland is the westernmost and perhaps least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning Sealand) and borders Belgium. Its capital is Middelburg. Zeeland has two seaports; in Vlissingen and Terneuzen.

Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953.

Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season.

The Oosterscheldekering, a storm surge barrier, is the largest of the thirteen ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. The construction of the Delta Works was in response to the widespread damage and loss of life due to the North Sea flood of 1953.

Neeltje Jans is an artificial island in the Netherlands in the province of Zeeland, in the Oosterschelde. It was constructed to facilitate the construction of the Oosterscheldedam.
After construction of the Oosterscheldedam, the theme/fun park 'Deltapark Neeltje Jans' and other various expositions were built on the island.
Another addition of the island is a nature reserve.

Botlek (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) - Part 1

The Botlek originally was the name of a stretch of the Nieuwe Maas river, part of the Rhine–Meuse delta near the Dutch cities of Vlaardingen and Spijkenisse in the province of South Holland.

For Photos of Botlek visit:

To visit Botlek click:

To Read and See more about Botlek visit:

Specifically, it was the name of the strait that separated the island of Rozenburg from the sand bar of Welplaat. The strait itself was merely the continuation of the Nieuwe Maas, and the stretch of the river south of Rozenburg continued to be called Nieuwe Maas until the confluence with Het Scheur formed the Brielse Maas estuary (now the Brielse Meer).

Major waterway regulation works were carried out in the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th centuries to improve water management and stop the delta from silting up; the Botlek was dammed off at its southern end (connecting Rozenburg and Welplaat) and remodelled into one of the largest of the Rotterdam seaports (see also Europoort).
