Riga was the European Capital of Culture in 2014, along with Umeå in Sweden. Riga hosted the 2006 NATO Summit, the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, the 2006 IIHF Men's World Ice Hockey Championships, 2013 World Women's Curling Championship and the 2021 IIHF World Championship. It is home to the European Union's office of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC). In 2017, it was named the European Region of Gastronomy.
Riga is the capital of the country and the largest city with a population of approximately 612 thousand. In fact, it is also known as the biggest city of the Baltic states. We had 3 days in Milan so we hit the ground running and tried to see and do as much as possible. We made time for major attractions like Il Duomo, Sforza Castle, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, but we also veered away from the crowds in search of street art and interesting neighborhoods.

Latvian coastline hike: 1 day, 32km, Mersrags- Roja

Winter can be tough for people who love the outdoors. When the sun sets early it can be tempting to chilling inside the house with some warm tea rather than go for an outdoor adventure. But the shorter days and longer nights of winter do offer something that warmer- full with emotions hike. Since the the sun starts to dip behind the horizon well before bedtime during the winter, a winter hike could be the perfect way to spend the weekend.
In last days of November we were on our way to continue second part of Latvian coastline hike (498 km), which is a part of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route (1200 km) which includes Latvia and Estonia ambit.
Our this time goal was ~65km, 2 day hike from Mērsrags to Kolka. But the situation changed and we end the hike on 32km.
We start our hike early in the morning, at 5:50am we were in the bus on the way to our start point in Mērsrags and 7am we were ready to start our adventure. The weather in the beginning was better as we thought, so we were pretty happy about that. Yeap, it was foggy and because of darkness it was little bit strange and uncomfy to walk, but after first kilometers you are already in the rhythm and forget about the uncomfy additions. But there is one thing you can't forget. That shitty, heavy bag on the shoulders. 15 kg bag possibly is the main thing which disturb us in the hike. Clavicle and shoulders are hurting all the time and you actually can't do anything to change it. Deal with it or stay home. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, you know!

HOTEL MARE in ROJA
HOTEL MARE in ROJA Übernachtung im Doppelzimmer Hotel Mare & Restaurant rund 5-8 Minuten zu Fuß vom Ostseestrand entfernt.
Während meiner Rundreise durch das Baltikum habe ich eine Nacht in Roja im Hotel Mare in Lettland verbracht. Das vorab über Booking.com gebuchte Hotelzimmer sollte sich lediglich irgendwo an der Ostsee in der Gegend um Kolka befinden, einen gewissen Standard haben und natürlich auch nicht zu teuer sein.
Aber bei einem Aufenthalt von lediglich einer Nacht konnte man da nicht so viel falsch machen und es standen zahlreiche Hotels zur Auswahl. Meine Auswahl auf das Hotel Mare in Roja fiel dann doch eher etwas spontan frei nach dem Motto Hauptsache ich habe ein Hotel mit Bett.
Und weil ich ja auch nur eine Nacht im Hotel verbacht habe fällt mein Fazit zum Hotel Robezu Nams Liepaja dementsprechend kurz aus:
Das Zimmer und das gesamte Hotel waren sauber, gepflegt und modern. Das Personal war sehr freundlich und das Bett war bequem. Das Hotel befindet sich direkt an einem kleinen Hafen und zum STrand war es auch nicht sehr weit. Rund 300 Meter entfernt vom Hotel befindet sich auch ein kleiner Supermarkt. Und am nächsten Morgen gab es ein tolles Frühstücksbuffet mit allerlei Leckereien. Ach ja und es gibt im Hotel Mare auch kostenlose Parkplätze. Was will man mehr für eine Nacht. Nach dem Frühstück ging es dann mit dem Auto weiter nach Riga in die Hauptstadt von Lettland.
