L’Aquila is the capital Abruzzo region, in Italy, 100 km from Rome, and dates back to the twelfth century.
L’Aquila is the city where I grew up and I always loved the beauty of its historical center, full of monumental churches, fascinating squares, extended porticoes, all surrounded by mountains!
This city can offer a unique journey through history, traditions, and nature.
So, what are ten possible attractions that I would show to a foreign friend who comes to visit me?
WHAT
1/10: I would start from the Basilica of Collemaggio, the symbol of the city of L'Aquila, and one of the most visited tourist destinations of Abruzzo. Built in 1288, according to the legends here Pope Celestino V was crowned in 1294. On the left side of the church there is the Holy Door: for believers, crossing this door gives the remission of sins.
2/10: The Spanish Fort was built on the highest point of the city in 1534. The Fort has four massive bastions at the corners, and at the entrance, characterized by the precious stone portal, where you can see the double-headed eagle belonged to Charles V.
3/10: Piazza Duomo is the historic meeting place for the people of L'Aquila. Here you can visit the Cathedral of Saints Massimo and Giorgio, the Church of the Holy Souls, and the pair of old fountains of 1300. In Piazza Duomo there are bars, ice cream parlors, and the tourist information office.
4/10: The Basilica of San Bernardino is located in a panoramic position on the top of the steps of via Forte Braccio. The Basilica is characterized by the high Renaissance facade, built by Cola dell'Amatrice in 1525, and inside you can appreciate the majestic wooden ceiling decorated with gold.
5/10: The Fontana delle 99 Cannelle was built in 1274 in the lower area of the city, near the Aterno river. The plant of the fountain is trapezoidal in shape, an architecture of great impact. The name derives from the number of jets of water that start from stone masks, all different from each other. Try counting them up to 99, which is a symbolic and mysterious number in L'Aquila culture.
6/10: Fontana Luminosa stands at the beginning of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the ideal gateway to the city center, with the Gran Sasso as a background. The two bronze female bodies support the typical Abruzzo basin from which the jets of water flows. Its name is due to the play of light and colors during the night.
7/10: Behind the Villa Comunale there is the complex of Palazzo dell'Emiciclo, built in 1888, now the seat of the Abruzzo Regional Council. It has a rich Ionic portico in a semicircular shape and hosts concerts and events.
8/10: Crossing L'Aquila's porticoes: L'Aquila's porticoes are an authentic piece of the city's past. They cross Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main street of the historic center, full of admirable buildings, and reach Piazza Duomo.
9/10: Walking in the green: L'Aquila is a center of art and culture, but look around and behind art and culture: you’ll notice Gran Sasso and so many other mountains. The Castle’s park is an example of a place where you can take a relaxing walk, have an aperitif or stop and read a book. Another green and scenic area just outside the walls is Parco del Sole, close to Collemaggio Basilica.
10/10: Attractions around: if you visit L’Aquila do not miss the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views visiting Gran Sasso, the highest mountain massif of central Italy and the set of several western films by Sergio Leone. And visit also the panoramic castle of Rocca Calascio, the set of the film The name of the rose, with the actor Sean Connery.

The Castelli Romani ( Castles of Rome) is a group of communes in the province of Rome, Italy. They are located at short distance south-east to Rome, at the feet of the Alban Hills.
The area of the Castelli occupies an ancient, fertile volcanic area which has allowed since ancient times a flourishing agriculture. The former crater is occupied by two lakes, the Lake of Nemi and that of Albano.
Starting from the Romans, it was an area frequented by the noblemen of Rome for its fresher climate during summer: the tradition was followed by the Popes which still have their summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, on the Lake Albano. Families which ruled in the castle include Orsini, Colonna, Chigi, Aldobrandini and Ruspoli.

Both within 100 km from Rome, reachable by walking on the Via Francigena, Montefiascone and Viterbo are two pearls. The first one on a higher position by the beautiful Lake Bolsena, has been a very important center of the State of the Church. The second one, which has also hosted the headquarters of the Papal States, has an incredibly broad and well maintained Medieval city center. Just to give you a little hint if you're the average tourist who skips from Rome to Florence...you're missing out.

Monte Cavo, or less occasionally, Monte Albano, is the second-highest mountain of the complex of the Alban Hills, near Rome, Italy. An old volcano extinguished around 10,000 years ago, lies about 20 km (12 mi) from the sea, in the territory of the comune of Rocca di Papa. It is the dominant peak of the Alban Hills. The current name comes from Cabum, an Italic settlement existing on this mountain.

It is one of the Castelli Romani about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southeast of Rome on the Alban Hills. It is close to the other communes of Velletri, Rocca Priora, Monte Compatri, Grottaferrata, Albano and Marino. It is the center of the Regional Park known as the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani.

Saffron is a very expensive spice that gives a yellow-orange coloring to foods that is still produced here. Without Saffron, there would be no San Gimignano as we know it. Saffron brought great wealth to the city, and it financed the tower building. It has repeatedly saved San Gimignano because it was used as currency to pay off debts incurred during the wars.

Frascati, in Lazio at a short distance from Rome, is a popular daytrip destination from the capital. Frascati is one of several attractive historic hilltowns to the south-east of Rome known collectively as the Castelli Romani. Every weekend these towns, and Frascati in particular, fill up with Romans looking for a change of pace, clean air, good food and wine. Often groups of Romans will drive here just for the evening, dining at one of the many informal restaurants which serve rich regional specialities and the local white wine.
The air is noticeably fresher than in the city, and in the sweltering summer months it has always been a popular resort. The wealthy built villas here, many of which are still standing although they're not open to the public. The most impressive is the Villa Aldobrandini, designed by Giacomo Della Porta for the nephew of a pope. This palace dominates the town, hovering above the central piazza in faded splendour. The gardens are open to the public and are free to visit - you just need to collect a permit from the tourist office first. On a weekday the grounds may be completely empty, and you can explore the terraces in solitary state. A gigantic water feature (no longer functioning), sculptures and architectural follies dominate the gardens behind the Villa, and you can climb up beside the crumbling cascade and imagine the estate in its glittering heyday.
The Villa Torlonia, nearby, was destroyed in the war. Nowadays it is a public park, where office workers jog in their lunch hour. You can still admire the gardens, and an impressive fountain, the Teatro delle acque (water theatre), designed by Carlo Maderno. The cathedral is worth a look, as are some of Frascati's other churches. There's no tourist circuit of important sights in Frascati. The chief appeal of an excursion is the relaxing ambience, fine feasting, and wandering around the evocative medieval streets and the faded grandeur of the aristocratic past.
Frascati is 13 miles (21km) from Rome, and is easily reachable by public transport. COTRAL buses run frequently from Anagnina metro station (remember to buy your tickets in advance from the kiosk at Anagnina, and to validate them when you get on the bus). For more information about COTRAl buses, see the Lazio transport page. There is also a local train service from Rome, which leaves from Stazione Termini.
The Frascati tourist information office is situated on the main square, Piazza Marconi. This is where the buses from (and to) Rome stop. There is also a panoramic terrace and a gelateria close at hand, so it's a good place to sit down and get your bearings when you arrive. Both the tourist office and the gardens of Villa Aldobrandini are closed for a couple of hours at lunchtime.

The hill town of Assisi in Umbria is one of Italy's best-preserved medieval villages. The ancient buildings are constructed from a local stone that has a slightly pink color enhancing the visual beauty of this special place with a lovely network of pedestrian lanes to explore, some of them so steep they are staircases rather than streets.
The main reason that most people visit the town is that it was the home of Saint Francis, one of the Catholic Church's most important saints, who is buried here under the great basilica that was constructed two years after his death in the early 13th century.
We will show you that is Assisi has much more to offer the traveler because it is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved of all of the Italian hill towns.
Assisi is in central Italy, a 30-minute drive from Perugia and two hours from Rome or Florence. You can also get there by train or bus.
That impressive Porta San Pietro gateway is part of the original medieval wall that went all the way around the town protecting it from attack, and the wall is still pretty much all there.
You'll quickly realize the streets are a little steeper than they look on the map.
When you come to Assisi, be prepared to climb some hills and go up the staircases, and up the paths, it's steep.
Typical of many Umbrian towns, it was built on a hill, partly to protect themselves from attackers, with origins of the town that go back thousands of years.
Some of the lanes in town are quiet residential areas with no shops but don't worry, there are plenty of streets that are filled with stores ready to sell you fascinating items, such as along busy via Portica, one of the main streets in town that will soon take us to the Piazza del Comune, the thriving heartbeat of the city.
This stretch of via Portica, just west of the piazza, has one of the biggest concentrations of places to eat. The self-service restaurant is one of those typical eateries that you're going to find all over Italy. You'll be out of there in 1/2 hour, enjoying a pretty good meal.
This brings us to the main Piazza Comune of Assisi – it's at the crossroads of town, you'll probably come back here several times in your visit.
The tower is 47 meters high. It's called Torre Del Popolo, the people's tower, connected to Palazzo Del Popolo/
The most fascinating building on the piazza is the ancient Roman temple of Minerva. Its façade is intact and very well preserved with six Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment.
The little streets around the piazza are an ideal place to just take a wanderer, kind of an aimless stroll. You can walk in these lanes just south of the piazza along Via Bernardo da Quintavalle. Like all of town, it's a very old neighborhood with stone buildings, mostly residential, and this lane is quite level like some of the others in this central area by the piazza.
Via San Ruffino is one of the most delightful streets in town, perhaps because it connects the main piazza with the Cathedral, and all along the way, it's got shops and restaurants, and beautiful old buildings.
Notice the perfect paving of the street. It was laid down with brick and stone in the most pleasant way, and it's so smooth and efficiently built that you will never trip or slip while walking on these beautiful lanes.
It's only 200 meters from the piazza to the top of via San Ruffino where you come upon the Cathedral of San Ruffino, one of the most popular attractions in town.
From the piazza in front of the church we get the best view of the fortress up on the hill the Roca Maggiore. You'll notice there is a slight difference in altitude from the piazza up to the fortress, and there's no elevator, no escalator. We'll need a little muscle power.
Walking around inside and exploring this Rocca Maggiore is just as fascinating as the views that you get looking out from it.
We've come down from the Rocca, heading now to the great Basilica of St. Francis, entering into Via San Francesco, the wonderful shopping street that will take us all the way to the Basilica of that great saint.
The Basilica of San Francesco ranks second only to St. Peter's in Rome as a point of Catholic pilgrimage.
Construction was started immediately after St. Francis's death in 1228 and was completed in 1253, with two churches in the same place. 28 frescoes by Giotto cover the walls of the upper church, depicting scenes in the life of St. Francis, the man who single-handedly revolutionized the Catholic Church through the return to values of peace and love.
