40 RIVERS OF LOVE, FORGIVENESS, AND APPRECIATION
This was sooo exciting for me -- to visit the first Italian river! It was like going for my favorite Italian ice cream when I was a kid
What you need to understand is this... in order to visit/cross 40 rivers in 40 days in 10 countries, I could not afford (time-wise) to visit some famous cities located on each river. That would take way more time and ... a lot of money, too. The purpose of this trip was THE RIVERS. So, here is how I worked at it...
Each night (or every other night) I would look at the map and find an ideal location -- like a town that I could stay overnight that was on my way through those 10 countries. Then, I looked for rivers along the way. Then I would find a place (like a business or restaurant or park) that was as close as possible to my road crossing the river. I would enter the first location into the GPS (that spoke in Polish to me -- I know: the car with German license plates, driving through Italy, with American passport, and Polish GPS talking to me... talking about GROWIG YOUR BRAIN CELLS! ), and I would follow it. Keep in mind that there are road construction and/or changes in the traffic that the GPS has no idea about. So, I've been driving through some towns and fields that no travel book would ever list!
So, often the GPS (and because of the location I picked) took me through some tiny villages and roads where 2 cars could not pass, but... that's part of the journey, isn't it?
To get to the Adda river I had to go through probably 10 small villages -- no, nothing special, but at least I had the chance to see the normal Italy -- not all those perfecto places that we all desire to see. I saw ordinary people doing ordinary things living in ordinary houses. Riding old bikes, cars, and tractors. Going on with their lives -- just like people do in all small towns and villages around the world. Sometimes I felt like I was back in my small town, Lukta, in Poland. Some of the buildings even looked the same. Only weather was much, much better than in Poland!
In the end it was all worth it. The river was beautiful! The place was secluded, quiet, and white -- like and altar ready for a ceremony.

Parco del Serio (Bg)
Il parco del Serio è un'area naturale protetta della Lombardia che si sviluppa da Seriate lungo il fiume Serio fino alla sua foce nell'Adda.
La sua istituzione risale al 1973 quando le province interessate espressero la loro volontà di tutelare l'ambiente fluviale seriano. Questa proposta si concretizzò nel 1985 con la costituzione del parco regionale.
Il corso del fiume segue un andamento nord-sud e presenta caratteristiche diverse a seconda dei tratti. Nella zona più a nord infatti il fiume è suddiviso in vari rami che vengono continuamente modificati a causa delle piene; questa zona è caratterizzata da una notevole permeabilità che spesso provoca l'infiltrazione delle acque nel sottosuolo. Nella parte più meridionale del corso del fiume si può notare la presenza di ambienti umidi che presentano spesso caratteristiche di grande interesse naturalistico.
Fauna
La fauna del parco presenta ancora significative presenze, nonostante si possa notare un notevole deterioramento dell'ambiente naturale.
È comunque da annoverare la presenza di una trentina di specie acquatiche che vanno dai temoli alle trote marmorate, dai tritoni ai rospi, dalle salamandre alle raganelle.
Tra i mammiferi sono presenti ricci, talpe, lepri e conigli selvatici, donnole, tassi, faine e volpi.
Tra i rettili sono molto diffusi il ramarro, le lucertole, il biacco, le bisce dal collare e le vipere comuni.

Se scegli l’opzione dall’auto devi sapere che una volta parcheggiata la macchina devi poi scendere una lunga scalinata di 268 gradini, che poi devi risalire al ritorno.

Seconda la tradizione l’Eremo fu fondato nel 1170 da un certo Alberto Besozzi che era un ricco mercante locale.

Questo mercante scampò ad un naufragio durante una traversata del lago.

Fece quindi voto a Santa Caterina di ritirarsi per il resto della sua vita in preghiera e solitudine in una grotta in quel tratto di costa e condurvi una vita da eremita.
So he made a vow to Saint Catherine to retire for the rest of his life in prayer and solitude in a cave on that stretch of coast and lead a hermit's life there.
Fece quindi edificare una cappella dedicata a Santa Caterina, attualmente visibile sul fondo della chiesa. La cappella risale al XII° secolo.

The Alessandro Taccani hydroelectric power plant, is owned by ENEL Greepower and is located in Trezzo sull'Adda, on a bank of the river Adda.
The plant has six alternators for a total generated power of 10.5MW.

Pizzighettone, città murata sull'Adda
Situato nella Val Padana centrale, nelle golene dell'Adda, pochi chilometri a Nord dalla confluenza nel Po, dall'epoca romana la storia di Pizzighettone è legata alla presenza del fiume che, prima della costruzione del ponte, permetteva un guado importante per il flusso di merci tra Piacenza e Lodi.
Il paese è attraversato dal fiume, che lo taglia da Nord a Sud: il centro storico di Pizzighettone sulla riva Est e la borgata di Gera su quella Ovest.
La topografia cittadina esprime una robusta cerchia di mura sulla sponda orientale dell'Adda, e una vasta serie di difese bastionate a Ovest del fiume. Accanto a questi, edificî antichi come la Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bassiano Vescovo (1158) e il Palazzo Comunale (secolo XV).
Oggi Pizzighettone è un paese sorprendente d diversi punti di vista, in particolare per i reperti che giungono dalla storia e che possono essere visitati, se si è mattinieri, prima dell'ora di mettersi a tavola per un piatto di “fasulìn de l'öc cun le cùdeghe”.
I riferimenti principali sono stati mantenuti e integrati durante i secoli dai vari signori che si succedettero al comando: le Signorie cremonesi, milanesi, la Repubblica di Venezia, i sovrani di Francia, gli Asburgo di Spagna e d'Austria, i Borbone, i Savoia, Napoleone Bonaparte...
Nel pomeriggio, dall'imbarcadero di Gera – il borgo di là dall'Adda da Pizzighettone – è possibile imbarcarsi sulla chiatta che, naviga il fiume verso Nord, in direzione di Formigara.
Tra le anse popolate da uccelli e pesci, tra gli argini su cui svettano alti il pioppo, la robinia, il salice e, nel sottobosco, il sambuco, è possibile ritrovare quella pace residua di un epoca in cui il paese era meno popolato. Dove la foresta è più antica, si trovano ancora il rovere, l'ontano e la possente quercus robur: la farnia.
Dalla sommità degli argini, sbucano i tetti delle cascine circondate da fertili campi agricoli in cui si coltiva in prevalenza mais.

Palermo Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum & the Church of Santa Caterina
The Cathedral of Palermo is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is located in the historical centre of Palermo and along with other churches was added as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015 being part of Arab- Norman Palermo. Its history goes back much further than when the Pope ordered the Norman Roger 2nd to take Arab Sicily in exchange for a Godly crown as King on 1072. That was after the Norman invasion of Italy in 1038 and the UK in 1066.
It was built in 1184 by the Normans on the site of a Muslim Mosque that had been built over a Christian basilica. It is a wonderful mix of styles and there is a passage from the Koran engraved on one of the columns. It was important to make this cathedral so impressive because it had to be better than William II's incredibly beautiful Cathedral of Monreale. As exaggerated as the beauty and architecture are the other cathedral still manages to be one of the 10 most visited sites in the world. That is the subject of a future film.
Here, what was probably the first church that was built on this site or nearby is mentioned in a papal bull of Pope Leo the Great in 444 and in a letter to the Sicilian clergy of 447.
In 592, Bishop Vittore had the church demolished to build a new Byzantine-type church on the ruins.
During the Arab domination of Palermo, between 831 and 1072, the church was a mosque.
The Gods can’t have been happy; an earthquake damaged the building on February 4, 1169. The bell tower and parts of the façade were affected badly. The divine punishment was blamed on the corruption in the city.
The cathedral was re-built by Walter Ophamil, the Anglo-Norman archbishop of Palermo, during the reign of William II of Sicily, and it was consecrated on April 6, 1185.
Improvements during the 14th and 15th centuries saw the four corner towers erected, the western portal and the altar of St. Peter…
in the 16th century, the marble tribune in the central apse, the Northern portal and a clock was added to the south-eastern tower...

Go on a Sunday if you wish to attend mass, do not go on a Sunday if you wish to see restricted areas that are closed for services.
