CATANIA - ITALY: Beach And Town

As the second largest city on the Italian Island of Sicily, Catania is an important economic hub for the country and is actually the 7th largest metropolis by area. With a population of 315,000 and a greater metropolitan population of 767,000, Catania lies on the eastern coast of Sicily directly in-between Pachino in the South and Messina in the North. This city was originally founded as a Greek colony in ancient times and since then has been part of numerous Empires and cultures including the Carthaginians, the Roman Republic, the Ostrogoths and eventually became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
During the Renaissance period, Catania was one of the most influential cities in the country and was known for its rich culture, arts and history. Today, Catania maintains a huge amount of its heritage and culture and offers a plethora of interesting structures and museums such as the Basilica Sant’Agata and the Museo Civici. Furthermore, this charming Sicilian city lies in close proximity to the legendary Mount Eta and offers a great amount of different day trips and outdoor sight-seeing excursions.

The best things to do in Catania:

Cathedral of Catania - It is a simply beautiful structure and is a masterpiece of Norman and Baroque architecture. Located in the centre of the old town, the cathedral can be found in the self-styled Piazza Del Duomo and is in close proximity to many of the other sights.

Ursino Castle - Sicily has several fine castles that serve as remnants from the period of conquest that saw the island change hands from various different ruling factions. Ursino Castle is a relic from the 13th century and was built as part of the Kingdom of Sicily by Emperor Frederick II. Today the castle stands in remarkable condition and all four of its original towers and walls still stand without damage; furthermore, remnants of the surrounding walls can also be seen in the castle grounds. Walk around the castle for some photographic opportunities, but also visit inside to see the fantastic Museo Civico which is housed within the castle walls.

Mount Etna - Catania virtually sits in the shade of the immense Mount Etna, and this active stratovolcano is one of the main tourist attractions of Sicily. Mount Etna stands at a height 3329m and is considered the tallest active volcano in Europe. The most recent eruption was in 2015 and the volcano actually discharged some lava. When travelling to Catania, you cannot pass up on the chance to climb Mount Etna and witness its gaping caldera up close. Various tour operators offer day trips to the Volcano – You can choose to hike, cycle, or even ride an ATV or a jeep – The choice is yours. When at the top of Mount Etna, on a clear day the scenery is unbelievable and you are granted with fantastic views of Sicily.

Piazza Del Duomo - As the main square in Catania, the Piazza Del Duomo has a great deal to offer in terms of attractions. Located in the heart of the city close to the port area, this central square is a regular gathering place for the locals and a great tourist spot. In the centre of the square is the impressive Fontana Dell’Elefante, the Fontana Dell’Amenano, Catania Cathedral and the Palazzo degli Elefanti – All fine pieces of architecture. Furthermore there is a series of cafes and restaurants with ideally situated outside seating so you can have a drink, a bite to eat, and enjoy the fine Sicilian weather. The Piazza Del Duomo is a great place to start a walking tour of Catania, and from here you are in close proximity to many of the main sights.

Teatro Romano - Sicily has several Roman Theatres all of which are in fantastic condition, and the Teatro Romano in Catania is no exception. Located in-between the Benedictine Monastery and Catania Cathedral the theatre is easily accessible and is a great site to visit whilst exploring the historic centre of the city. Created in the 2nd century BC, the theatre features a main seating area and also a smaller Odeon theatre to the left hand side. The seats of the theatre and several other sections are actually created from lava taken from Mount Etna and the structure remains in fantastic condition.

Giardini Bellini/Parco Maestranze - A fine public space for relaxation and enjoying nature, the Giardini Bellini and the Parco Maestranze are located to the west of the Piazza Carlo Alberto in the town centre. The Bellini garden is located at the east side of the park and contains a beautiful fountain and several flower beds. Furthermore there is an ornate bandstand and many varieties of tree. Aside from the Giardini Bellini, the Maestranze Park features a series of shaded walking trails covered by luscious forest.

Lido Azzurro - One of the main stretches of beach next to Catania, the Lido Azzurro is a great place to relax, soak up the sun and have some fun. This fantastic beach is located approximately 15 minutes to the south of Catania in close proximity to the port and harbour.

Catania & Etna - Italy | Sicily | 18 Things to Do | Travel video | GoPro 11 & DJI Mini 3 Pro

The island of Sicily and its city of Catania is amazing. I really enjoyed my 5 days trip there. And of course, I spend one day to go to the mount Etna. Etna is really intresting vulcano and it is intresting to visit this huge area. I was surprised how huge is the park around the volcano Etna. I spent practically the whole day there and it was a really amazing experience. I used the city bus from the center for 6 EUR and then used the cable car for 30 EUR. I had a lot of time and it didn't make sense to buy another bus ride for 36 EUR. Plus it was nice to walk around Etna.

I enjoyed classic summer days in Catania and stayed longer to enjoy the sun. Catania is the perfect city for autumn days in Europe. During my stay in Catania the temperature was around 24 degrees and I could walk around in t-shirts and shorts again. Catania is a small city, worth visiting the Piazza del Duomo with Fountain of the Elephant, Catedrale Sant'Agata and Castello Ursino. Of course I had many pizzas in Catania. Italy and food always are best combination.

Samozřejmě Italie a jídlo jdou vždy super kombinovat a já ochutnal několik místních pizz.

Enjoy my video from Catania in which you can see 18 Things to Do in Catania / 18 míst, která musíte vidět a navštívit v Catanii:

DON'T VISIT SICILY in Italy Without Seeing Catania ???????? Best Things to do in the City

Welcome to Catania, Sicily. In this week's video we're exploring the real Sicily. Catania is Sicily's second biggest city. A few videos ago we were in Palermo and throughout the video we'll be comparing the two cities, is Catania better than Palermo?

We start things off at a church in Catania called Chiesa di San Nicolo L'Arena. We explore inside the church but then visit the rooftop to get the best views of Catania including the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna (the most active volcano in Europe).

Afterwards we head to a place called Canusciuti Sicilian Cafe to try a couple of different types of Arancine.

Not far from the cafe we came across an ancient Roman (Greek?) amphitheatre so made our way inside to check it out. We then headed to the main square in Catania where we saw the main cathedral in the city as well as the Elephant Fountain.

One of our favourite things about Catania was discovering some more local places. We went to a place called BarnAut to get a beer. It has a very local, bohemian vibe to it.

Lastly, since we've mainly been eating Sicilian and Italian food we decided it's time for something else. We made our way to a Korean restaurant called Panda where we had a few different (and delicious) Korean dishes.

The Best of Sicily in 8 minutes | Sicily in 4K cities, beaches, volcanoes, lava,...

Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is just off the toe of Italy's boot. Video show all important, the best of Sicily, awesome and beautiful places of Sicily in less than 9 minutes. The video starts with early morning sunrise over the Mediterranean sea in Sicily.

Segesta Sicily is the Doric temple. Segesta was one of the major cities of the Elymians, one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily. It is located in the northwestern part of Sicily in Italy, near the modern commune of Calatafimi-Segesta in the province of Trapani. The Hellenization of Segesta happened very early and had a profound effect on its people.

Selinunte was an ancient Greek city on the south-western coast of Sicily in Italy. It was situated between the valleys of the Cottone and Modione rivers. The archaeological site contains five temples centered on an acropolis. Of the five temples, only the Temple of Hera, also known as Temple E, has been re-erected. At its peak, before 409 BC the city may have contained up to 30,000 people, excluding slaves.

Catania is the second largest city of Sicily after Palermo located on the east coast facing the Ionian Sea. It is the capital of the Metropolitan City of Catania, one of the ten biggest cities in Italy, and the seventh largest metropolitan area in Italy. The population of the city proper is 320,000 while the population of the city's metropolitan area, Metropolitan City of Catania, stood at 1,116,168 inhabitants. Catania was founded in the 8th century BC by Chalcidians. In 1434, the first university in Sicily was founded in the city. In the 14th century and into the Renaissance period, Catania was one of Italy's most important cultural, artistic and political centers. The city is noted for its history, culture, architecture, and gastronomy. Its old town, besides being one of the biggest examples of baroque architecture in Italy, is a World Heritage Site, protected by UNESCO.

Lampedusa is the largest island of the Italian Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The commune of Lampedusa e Linosa is part of the Sicilian province of Agrigento which also includes the smaller islands of Linosa and Lampione. It is the southernmost part of Italy and Italy's southernmost island.

Taormina is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-¬Roman theater still used today.

Syracuse is a city on the Ionian coast of Sicily, Italy. It's known for its ancient ruins.

Palermo is the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. The 12th-century Palermo Cathedral houses royal tombs, while the huge neoclassical Teatro Massimo is known for opera performances. Cefalu, a famous town on the Mediterranean sea.

Castellammare del Golfo is a town and municipality in the Trapani Province of Sicily. Heading upwards from its marina/harbor called Cala Marina, with many restaurants and bars, the urban plan is made of steps and winding streets that lead to Piazza Petrolo in one direction or towards the main central gardens, where the town center lies with many shops, cafes, and restaurants. The main street is called Corso Garibaldi. Castellammare del Golfo has been described as probably having the most beautiful peninsula in all of Sicily.

Stromboli - The incredible volcano island of Stromboli off the coast of Sicily, Italy. Stromboli is one of the worlds most active volcanos and is famous for its regular daily explosions.

Lipari is the largest, most famous and lively island among the Eolians.

Story of Testa di moro / Moor's Head
There are many variations of the legend behind these elegant, hand-painted ceramic decorative vases. Two are most prevalent and both tell a story of passion, betrayal, jealousy and revenge.

During the time of the Moor domination in Sicily, a Saracen merchant falls in love with a beautiful local girl in the Arab quarter of Palermo, Kalsa. Their love blazed fiercely until the maiden stumbled upon a secret - her lover had a hidden family in distant lands. Consumed by jealousy and fury, she ended his life while he slept, severing his head in the belief it would bind him to her forever. She used the head as a vase to grow a beautiful basil plant within, watering the plant with her tears. As the plant flourished, the intoxicating smell of basil made her neighbours envious and they sought to replicate the bountiful fertility, crafting vibrant clay head pots with the same features as the Moor's Head.

In the other version, the girl's family discovers the love between a noble Sicilian girl and a young Arab. Her family punishes them both by beheading them. Their heads are then turned into vases and hung as warnings on a balcony. The heads represent the impossible love of a young couple and are always made in pairs.

Giarre Sicily walking tour 4k

#Giarre #Sicily

Giarre (Giarri in Sicilian, the Giari in the local dialect) is an Italian town that is part of the metropolitan city of Catania in Sicily.
Giarre is located on the eastern coast of Sicily, between Etna and the Ionian Sea, sloping towards the sea, at an altitude of 81 meters above sea level, in a ventilated and panoramic position. The city is one of the best observation points of the collapsing caldera of the Valle del Bove, into which most of the lava flows from the eastern side of the volcano are poured.
In 1815, the inhabited center, thanks to its cultural and economic liveliness, after numerous attempts obtained autonomy from Mascali together with the villages of Riposto, Torre Archirafi, Macchia, San Giovanni Montebello, Dagala del Re, Sant'Alfio, Milo and others smaller centers; some of them later formed themselves into autonomous administrative entities.
During Fascism, by decree of 1939 the two municipalities of Giarre and Riposto were merged and first took the name of Giarre-Riposto and then, in 1942, that of Ionia. A subsequent decree of 1945 restored the previous situation with the municipalities of Giarre and Riposto divided.
