What to eat in Ribera del Duero: the best of Castilian cuisine #wine #winelover #riberadelduero

The excellent wines produced in Ribera del Duero are paired best with the typical dishes of the region. If you are planning to visit this amazing region of Spain you will want to get the most out of your trip, this list will help you understand the local cuisine and discover all the amazing flavors Ribera has to offer.

Spain is divided into autonomous communities. Ribera del Duero is located in the community of Castilla León, slightly northwest of Madrid. This area of Spain is known for its red meats and charcuterie, but those aren’t all the tricks Castilian cuisine has up its sleeves.

Ribera del Duero literally means riverbank of the Duero. The Duero River is the third-longest river in Spain that runs from Porto in Portugal almost all the way to Soria, in the center of Spain. The cuisine is, therefore, is slightly different to the rest of Castilla y Leon and influenced by the River itself, and the microclimate it creates.

So, this being said, let’s go over the best of the best of local Ribera cuisine:

Roasted Lamb
This is the most typical dish in the region, by far. Sheep are a huge part of the agriculture in Castilla Leon and have been for hundreds of years and they have spent that time perfecting everything to do with sheep. This dish, in particular, has been perfected over the centuries and its absolutely delicious and the perfect dance partner for Ribera wine.

Sheep’s cheese
Another product of the relationship of the region with sheep, and again an amazing pairing for Ribera wine. The cheeses from this region are so special in fact that, like the wine, they enjoy their own appellation. They are intensely aromatic and delicate tasting and the different agings provide a wide palette of flavors.

Mushrooms
Ribera del Duero is prime mushroom territory: thistle mushrooms, colmenilla mushrooms, portobellos, milk caps, etc. Especially in fall you can find a wide variety of Delicious mushrooms and a wide array of flavors. You can find many mushrooms preserves in Ribera as well but there nothing like eating them freshly picked in soups, stews, omelets, grilled, fried, etc. You will find all sorts of preparations.

Morcilla
Morcilla is one of the more well-known dishes from the region, and also one of the most polarizing. Morcilla is blood sausage, made with pigs blood, lard, spices, onion, and rice typically in Castilla León.

It's a very simple and rustic dish but incredibly tasty. The typical way of preparing morcilla in the region is either roasted or pan-fried with local bread, similar to Italian focaccia called torta de Aranda. It also Delicious in soups and stews.

Calducho
This is the stock resulting from preparing Morcilla and it is used to make soups and stews and it's packed with flavor. Its an incredibly simple dish and the best time to enjoy it is during the “matanza”.

Chorizos botagueños
Another very typical sausage that is made in the region are chorizos botagueños. You may already be familiar with chorizo, and although similar, this preparation is unique to the region and especially delicious. Again a wonderful pairing for bold Ribera wine.

Crawfish
Another dish that we can thank the Duero River for. Crawfish are rare to find in restaurants in Spain, and even in Ribera its more of a seasonal delicacy, but if you see it on a menu, it is well worth a try. The traditional preparation in Ribera is to saute them with olive oil, onion, garlic, and chili. Ribera del Duero produces white wines as well, just saying.

Lamb Chops
Another staple of Ribera cuisine and an absolute must. What makes them special are the sheep themselves, like most of the cooking in the region, the quality of the dish comes from the quality of the ingredients. The traditional way of preparing them in Ribera is grilled over grapevine coals which infuses the meat with a unique flavor and aroma.

Garlic soup
Surprisingly, this was the traditional breakfast of the laborers that worked the vineyards in Ribera. The basic ingredients are olive oil, garlic (of course), bread and salt with an assortment of spices but most people dress it up with an egg.

It's a heavy, comforting and delicious meal that will get you ready for any trek or winery visits you might have scheduled.

Torta de Aranda
This is the bread we mentioned earlier when talking about Morcilla. It’s a heavily oiled flatbread similar to focaccia. It’s baked in round disks with an extra serving of olive oil and rock salt just before it goes in so the crust essentially fries in the oven. It raises slightly while baking and it ends up being crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

There are many other amazing foods and dishes to discover in Ribera del Duero but this is a good place to start. Make sure to explore and try anything that catches your eye always accompanied by a nice glass of Ribera Wine in hand.

Portofino along the shores of the Italian Riviera, a little seaport town, has a terrace with the picture-perfect postcard view of Portofino’s harbor, colorful buildings, and green hills beyond. This is not to be missed; in fact this view is the reason for our visit. Somehow the overall elements around you fit together in a perfectly harmonious whole,
Santa Margherita is a classic town on the waterfront of the Italian Riviera, with arcaded sidewalks, beautiful palm trees and a green park promenade along the beach and marina.
When you walk in a block from the waterfront you discover a charming Old Town atmosphere with pedestrian streets, little piazzas, shops, restaurants and locals out for a stroll. Not many tourists in this town, which therefore has a more authentic Italian feeling. It’s a great little town full of light and color with orange and brown pastel buildings nestled right up against the picturesque waterfront.

Barcelona part 10 La Ribera, Born and beach

Entering the section of old Barcelona referred to as La Ribera, turn from Carrer dels Corders into the major walkway of Correr Montcada, which changes names a few times and basically takes you through the center of this historic zone. This was an area of deluxe palaces of rich merchants back in the 14th and 15th centuries and many of these buildings still stand today, adapted to new uses, such as the Picasso Museum.
Love him or not, Picasso was the major artist of the 20th century and lived in Barcelona during his formative years from ages 14 through 23 when his career and fame really got started. Then he left Spain, especially because of his distaste for the dictatorship of Franco, when he moved on to Paris and other parts of France where his genius continued to flourish. Founded after his death, this is the most popular museum in town, with one of the world's largest Picasso collections spread through what had been five separate mansions now seamlessly joined. If you don't want to pay for the museum admission, at least have a look at the series of interconnected courtyards, and you are always welcome to visit the gift shop.
Continue south along Correr Montcada, with some diversions through the numerous side streets that honeycomb this most historic neighborhood, with many little shops tucked away. When you get hungry, it pays to look carefully for the little restaurants hidden away in side alleys. Perversely, it seems the most popular eateries are trying hard to not draw any further attention to themselves and don't post signs, menus or addresses. A good example is Nou Celler, tucked away between Carrer de la Princesa and Barra de Ferro just west of the Picasso Museum, offering Catalan specialties, good service and reasonable prices.
After lunch, head for the large gothic church, Santa Maria del Mar, with its massive interior second only to the cathedral in size. The church is really impressive, consisting of a huge nave with soaring ceiling supported on pointed arches, and brilliant stained glass. This was all built during the medieval period, in the 13th and 14th centuries, so the architectural form is pure gothic. There is no influence or embellishment here from the later period of the Renaissance, nor was it built upon an earlier foundation in the Romanesque style of thick walls, low ceiling and small windows.
Behind is the tree-lined promenade of Passeig del Born with several short shopping streets extending a few blocks south. This neighborhood was the center of town back in the Middle Ages, functioning as the financial marketplace, major gathering spot, execution grounds, and general place to be. Today it is experiencing a rebirth, with many trendy shops and cafes thriving in the blocks around the church. A major park with the public zoo, Parc de la Ciutadella, is about one half-mile further east.
Notice the beautiful small plaza in front of the church of Santa Maria del Mar. It is busy during the day as well as at night with the shops and cafes around it, and the people walking through. This is a major pedestrian thoroughfare connecting different parts of the old section of town, so there are always plenty of people to see.
When exiting this zone, follow the nice shopping street, Carrer de l'Argenteria, which extends 200 yards from the front of Santa Maria del Mar back into the center of the historic district. If you continue walking south for 15 minutes you will come to the big sandy beach, filled with bodies on a sunny day.

10. Paestum
Paestum is a Greek settlement where you can find the best preserved Greek doric temples worldwide. Most of the ancient Greek city has not been excavated yet. Besides three temples, the side has a gymnasium, city wall and tower ruins and plenty of house wall ruins. Part of the site is also a museum showing excavated items such as statues, vases, metalwork, and painted grave stones.

9. Ravello
A peaceful area with a small population, Ravello offers stunning views of the Mediterranean. Visit their renowned gardens, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, and their spectacular Duomo, the Cathedral of Ravello, which is located in Vescovado Square. During summer months the city hosts the annual Ravello Festival, an event started in 1953 in honor of Richard Wagner and continued as a celebration of local art and music.

8. Capri
The small Italian island of Capri is situated 5 km from the mainland in the Bay of Naples, a celebrated beauty spot and coastal resort since the days of the Roman Republic until now. Capri, known in Greek mythology as the isle of the sirens, was a favored resort of the Roman emperors. Most notoriously, the emperor Tiberius had his villa on the island, the location (supposedly) of debauched orgies.

7. Pompeii & Herculaneum
Pompeii is in Campania, Italy, not far from Naples. Its major attraction is the ruined ancient Roman city of the same name, which was engulfed by Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail.

6. Certosa di San Martino
Certosa di San Martino, a former monastery complex, now a museum. It is the most visible landmark of the city, perched atop the Vomero hill that commands the gulf. A Carthusian monastery, it was finished and inaugurated under the rule of Queen Joan I in 1368. Today, the buildings house a museum with a display of Spanish and Bourbon era artifacts, as well as displays of the presepe—Nativity scene—considered to be among the finest in the world.

5. Capodimonte Museum
It hosts paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries including major works by Simone Martini, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Masaccio, Sandro Botticelli, Lorenzo Lotto, Giovanni Bellini, Giorgio Vasari, El Greco, Jacob Philipp Hackert. It is also the place where are hosted the works of the most important Neapolitan painters, like Jusepe de Ribera, Luca Giordano, the Neapolitan Caravaggisti.

4. Museo Archeologico Nazionale
It is the most important Italian archaeological museum, and it contains a large collection of Roman artifacts from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. The collection includes works of the highest quality produced in Greek, Roman and Renaissance times.

3. Duomo (Naples Cathedral)
Naples Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral, the main church of Naples, southern Italy, and the seat of the Archbishop of Naples. It is widely known as the Cattedrale di San Gennaro, in honour of Saint Januarius, the city's patron saint, but is actually dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

2. Castel Nuovo
It is a medieval castle and the main symbol of the architecture of the city. It was first begun in 1279 by Charles I of Anjou and completed three years later. Castel Nuovo soon became the nucleus of the historical center of the city, and was often the site of famous events. For example, on December 13, 1294, Pope Celestine V resigned as pope in a hall of the castle. The event was famously depicted by Dante Alighieri in his masterpiece la Divina Commedia, in the verse Colui che per viltade fece il gran rifiuto.

Palazzo Reale is one of the four residences used by the Bourbon Kings of Naples during their rule of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (1730-1860). The Royal Palace is on the site of an earlier building meant to host King Philip III of Spain, who however never made the trip. The architect chosen for that palace was Domenico Fontana. The building was put up on the site of an even older Spanish viceroyal residence from the early 16th century.

One of the three most perfect temples in the Greek world may be seen in Agrigento's Valley of Temples. One of the largest Greek temples is located in Selinunte. Villa Romana del Casale in Enna is one of the best-preserved villas in the Roman Empire, with more than 37674 sq. ft. (3,500 sq. m) of mosaics. Ragusa and Modica are twin towns that symbolise Europe's pinnacle of Baroque art. Monreale's beautiful mosaics and fine cloister are both considered European art highlights, and Palermo's Archaeological Museum has one of Italy's best collections. Mount Etna, continental Europe's highest active volcano, and the nightly display from Stromboli, in the surrounding Aeolian Islands, are two of Sicily's most dependable natural wonders. (1) The Valley of Temples in Agrigento

Agrigento's enormous complex of temples and tombs dates back to 500 BCE and features Sicily's best surviving Doric temple (Tempio di Concordia), which is one of the most perfect to survive anywhere. In the eastern group, the Tempio di Juno Lacinia is nearly as large, while in the western group, the Temple of the Olympian Zeus is the largest at 131 ft. (40 m) but was damaged by an earthquake. Also in the western group, the circular Doric Tempio di Heracles was destroyed by the Carthaginians and reconstructed by the Romans, only to be partially damaged in an earthquake.

(2) Mount Etna

Etna is a mystery; even its height fluctuates with each eruption, making it impossible to predict. However, with its often-smoking cone and height of over 9843 ft. (3,000 m), it dominates the skyline. Volcanic vents, fumaroles, hot springs, and lava flows contribute to the region's ever-changing topography, which you may explore on foot or in all-terrain vehicles. Roads lead to the cable car station, where you can take a day excursion from Catania or Taormina to the 8202 ft. (2,500 m) elevation. Skiing near the top is possible in the winter. A narrow-gauge train circles the mountain almost completely, or you can drive around it, passing through towns with castles, ancient sites, and beautiful landscapes.

Ortigia is a small island in Syracuse, Sicily, that serves as the historical heart of the city. Many historical landmarks may be found on the island, which is also known as the Città Vecchia. Syracuse's Città Vecchia (Old City) is a maze of streets that dates back to the Middle Ages. It was fortified by the Greeks, who also built temples to Apollo and Athena. One of these, which was incorporated into the cathedral in the 7th century, still exists today. For more than two centuries, it was used as a mosque before being re-Christianized by the Normans, who added the mosaics. Ortigia is a fantastic spot to get a sense of what life is like in the area. Stroll down the Foro Italico promenade and take a break on a shady bench to take in the beauty of the sea.

Car horns blare continuously, the summer sun is merciless, and opening hours appear to be flexible in Palermo. But take your time. It's also a charming city, with sweet pastries filling the air, backstreets leading to pretty squares, and mosaiced churches dotting the landscape. In Palermo, you can't avoid history. Arabic cupolas, Baroque facades, Byzantine mosaics, and Norman remains to abound throughout the city. However, there is now a modern art scene in Palermo, as well as cutting-edge cuisine and a plethora of new lodging options.

(5) Cefalù

Cefalù is a northern Sicilian beach city. It's famous for its Norman cathedral, a fortress-like structure with magnificent Byzantine mosaics and soaring twin towers dating from the 12th century. The Mandralisca Museum, located nearby, houses archaeological artefacts as well as a photo gallery featuring a portrait by Antonello da Messina. To the west are the beaches of Mazzaforno and Settefrati.

10 Days in Sicily - Catania to Palermo including Siracusa, Ragusa, Taormina, Agrigento and Monreale

We flew into Catania from Rome and used it as a base to explore the highlights on the east coast - Siracusa, Ragusa and Taormina. On the way to Palermo, we stopped to see the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. From there we drove up to Palermo and used it as a base for a few days before flying back out to Rome on onwards.
