The Azores: Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel Azores, Portugal 4K

#myportugueseculture #saomiguelisland

Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel Azores,, The municipality is one of the six that constitute the island of São Miguel. It occupies most of the northern section of the island, from the Atlantic coast to the volcanic mountains in the center of the island. It is the only municipality on São Miguel to share boundaries with all five other municipalities: it is bounded by Nordeste (east), Povoação (southeast), Ponta Delgada (west), Lagoa and Vila Franca do Campo (south). All the municipalities are linked by several regional roads that circle the island or cross the mountains in the central section.

The relief is dominated by the Serra de Água de Pau, which includes a caldeira occupied by the Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire). The highest elevation is Pico da Barrosa at 947 metres (3,107 ft) (overlooking Lagoa do Fogo) or Monte Escuro at 890 metres (2,920 ft); this volcanic massif also extends to the plateau of Graminhais, by the eastern border with Nordeste, where the Pico do Salto do Cavalo 954 metres (3,130 ft) has a well known lookout. The volcanic geology, associated to the occurrence of many springs in the foothills, have been responsible for the fast creeks flowing in deep ravines, one of which gave its name to the town. Other volcanic manifestations in the area are fumaroles, such as Caldeira Velha or Caldeiras, and mineral hot springs at Lombadas, Gramas and Ladeira da Velha.

In addition to the river valleys and mountains, there are several beaches, including the main beaches in Ribeira Grande (Santa Bárbara and Monte Verde), Moinhos Beach (at Porto Formoso) and Viola Beach (in the shadow of Lomba da Maia).

Azores Island Sao Miguel Top 20 Places to Visit

Azores Island Sao Miguel October 2016

TOP Places in AZORES: Discover Sao Miguel Island's Top Attractions in 2023

After a few days discovering Sao Miguel island in the Azores islands, today I will finally show you the best waterfall on the island and the best hot springs during the night time. On our last day we will also show you the majestic mountains and lakes of this small island.

It is incredible how such a small island has so much to offer.

That is why I have recorded the most beautiful of these last moments so that you can enjoy as if you were with us. Discover the most magical and unique places on this incredible island. Let 's go!

In the previous chapter we couldn't find the Salto do Prego waterfall. Now we are going to the town of Faial da Terra to be able to find the waterfall before the sun goes down. It is a very small town with only 377 inhabitants and the only way to access it is going up and down the mountain. We parked the car and from there we started walking towards the waterfall along a route that they told us lasted 1 hour and a half.

The route is considered moderate but I still recommend that you take water with you, which was our big mistake. Along the way you will see a lot of vegetation, a river and surprisingly many chickens and roosters that have their home there and sleep on top of the trees.

It is not only the best waterfall on the island, but also the best place on it. We arrived when the sun was going down and there was a beautiful light that created this magic energy
made you feel like you were in a fairy tale.

After a long day, there is nothing better than relaxing in hot springs. This place didn't look interesting from the outside but after paying €8 and going inside, we were really amazed. The maximum time to be inside is 1 hour and a half and you can enjoy many different pools. There is enough lighting to see the pool but perfect to enjoy the stars.

The most interesting thing is that in the middle there is a river of hot water that releases a lot of steam and makes this place unique. I definitely recommend this place if you come to Sao Miguel.

Good morning! Before continuing with our trip, I wanted to show you the place where we stayed. It is a fairly large apartment with lots of light and with everything you need. The price we paid for 4 nights was €204, which was really good. The furniture and decoration were quite minimalistic and clean and my favourite part was the bathroom. The house is called Quinta das Camélias.

On our last day we started our route to the west of the island. Our first stop was in the center of the island as it was the first thing we wanted to see when we arrived. This place is called Caldeira Velha, where you can simply walk and enjoy nature for €3 or you can pay 8€ if you also want to have a bath in the hot springs. Both options are worth it and are highly recommended.
The first sensation we had as we advanced along the path that runs through the entire Natural Park was that of immersing ourselves in the middle of the Amazon Jungle. The vegetation of Caldeira Velha is the most varied and exotic. It is one of the most amazing natural treasures of São Miguel, thermal pools wrapped in virgin nature.

We hadn't been walking for even two minutes when we began to perceive the intense smell of sulfur so characteristic of this place and this sulfur present in the waters of the entire park is what decorates the rocky walls. Although the volcano has been inactive since the 16th century, its intense internal energy is the cause of the extremely high temperatures reached by the waters of the natural pools of the natural park.

Our next stop is probably one of the most famous places on this island. Located in the center of São Miguel, Lagoa do Fogo is one of those places that deserves to be on the cover of any recognised travel magazine. In fact, it is one of the biggest attractions of the island.

We continued to our next stop: the most famous viewpoint on the island and I have to say that my expectations were very high and they were met.

As you know, this island has many mountains and lakes and thanks to the bright colors, it makes you feel like you are on a movie set.

This viewpoint is undoubtedly the most impressive place of all and is called 'The Hell's Mouth Viewpoint''

Every time I see a new place I say that it is the best, but really guys, you have to come here and you will understand me. Every place is more impressive than the other and at the end of the day you don't know which one to choose. It's amazing how there are so many different sceneries in such a small island. After enjoying the views, we headed to another place that I really wanted to see, but before that we stopped to refill our bottles with the fresh and pure water.

I wanted to find some natural hot pools by the sea but the map didn't take us to the right place, so if you go, tell me how you got it! The day was ending and we went to the first place we visited on our trip, the beach of Santa Barbara.
