Rethymno Greece is a laid-back prefecture located between the regions of Chania and Heraklion. Relatively untouched by international tourists, Rethymno still keeps its traditional charm.
The video was recorded 14th of September 2020.
On the northern side of Rethymno Crete, there are some cosmopolitan seaside resorts, such as Bali, Adelianos, Kampos, Panormos, and Platanias. They are perfect for your stay, as they have a selection of Rethymno hotels and villas. But, if you seek a laid-back place to stay, a drive around Rethymno will get you to many secluded places, such as Agia Galini and Plakias.
The center of activities in Rethymnon is Rethymno Old Town. The architecture of Rethymno Town is strongly influenced by the Venetians, who ruled the island in the past. This picturesque town is full of narrow alleys, elegant mansions, arches, and boasts a beautiful Venetian port. The port of Rethymno is hands down the most popular spot of the town! It is lined with cafeterias and restaurants, while the seafront promenade is perfect for evening strolls. Another vestige of the Venetian occupation is Fortezza, an imposing medieval castle that stands on a hill above the town.
The northern and southern coasts of Rethymno are fringed with beautiful beaches, such as Bali, Panormos, Adelianos Kampos, Plakias, and Agia Galini. Rethymno beaches are not the only standouts of the region, though. The inland holds many surprises: traditional villages, impressive gorges, and monasteries, such as Preveli and Arkadi. If you want to introduce yourself to the local culture, a visit to the villages of Rethymno is a must!

In this video, we highlight 7 places you should visit in Crete Greece in 2021. Crete is the largest island of Greece and has many things to do and see. These are the 7 best things to do in Crete:
7. The 7th best thing to do in Crete is visit Heraklion. This is the largest city on the island and is also the capital of Crete, so it’s the perfect place to start your journey. Heraklion has a long history and has Arab as well as Venetian influences. It’s a great destination for anyone who loves a combination of history, beaches, and food.
6. The 6th best thing to do in Crete is to spend time at Elafonisi Beach. This pristine beach is located on the west coast of the island, about 72 km south-west of Chania. The clear, turquoise waters have brought travellers here for centuries and it was very busy when we were there as well. Not only does the lagoon have crystal blue waters with excellent visibility, but Elafonisi also has very gentle waves and is the perfect place to swim and relax.
5. Heraklion has attracted ever-greater attention as a wine destination in recent years and more than two-thirds of Crete’s vineyards are found here. The region accounts for about 80% of the island’s wine production. We went wine tasting in the nearby town of Dafnes, and highly recommend it. Not only is the setting extremely beautiful, but the wine tastings are also affordable and delicious.
4. The 4th thing you can’t miss in Crete, Greece is Matala beach. This beach is located 68km to the southwest of Heraklion, which is about an hour drive. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete and is a true hippie town with some incredible cave and rock formations.
3. At number 3, we have the Knossos ruins, which are widely considered to be Europe’s oldest city. The Palace of Knossos is located just south of modern-day Heraklion, near the north coast of Crete. Built by the old civilization called the Minoans, it covers about 150,000 square feet or 14,000 square meters.

2. Chania was by far our favorite city in Crete. On one hand, it’s beautiful and different from the other cities in Crete, and on the other hand it’s a great base to explore the island’s highlights from. The city itself is located on the northwest coast and known for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants.
1. Balos beach is the number one thing to do on Crete in our opinion. The panoramic views from above are some of the best we’ve seen throughout our travels so far. Balos is located in a wild, remote area about 1 hour to the west of Chania. It’s so spectacular that you may want to spend a full day here.

10. Gournia
Gournia is the site of a Minoan palace complex on the island of Crete, Greece, excavated in the early 20th century by the American archaeologist, Harriet Boyd-Hawes. Gournia lies in the municipality of Ierapetra in the prefecture of Lasithi.
9. The Amari Valley & Mt Ida
Crete's Mount Ida is the island's highest summit, sacred to the Goddess Rhea, and wherein lies the legendary cave in which baby Zeus was concealed from his father Cronus. It is one of a number of caves believed to have been the birthplace or hiding place of Zeus. On the flank of this mountain is the Amari Valley, the site of expansion by the ancient settlement at Phaistos.
8. Samaria Gorge
A 14km gorge that descends 1250 meters to sea level through some of Europe's most spectacular natural scenery. The walk up the gorge from south to north is pleasant for the main part but the last 3km, up the Xyloskala is extremely tiring. The most famous part of the gorge is the stretch known as the Gates, where the sides of the gorge close in to a width of only four meters and soar up to a height of almost 300 meters.
7. Gortys
Gortyn is a municipality and an archaeological site on the Mediterranean island of Crete, 45 km away from the modern capital Heraklion. The seat of the municipality is the village Agioi Deka. Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete, was first inhabited around 3200 BC, and was a flourishing Minoan town between 1600-1100 BC.
6. Rethymno
Rethymno is a city of approximately 40,000 people in Greece, the capital of Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete. It was built in antiquity, but was never a competitive Minoan centre. It was, however, strong enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town with two dolphins in a circle.
5. Phaistos
Phaistos currently refers to a Bronze Age archaeological site at modern Phaistos, a municipality in south central Crete. Ancient Phaistos was located about 5.6 km east of the Mediterranean Sea. The name, Phaistos, survives from ancient Greek references to a city in Crete of that name, shown to be, in fact, at or near the current ruins.
4. Chania
Chania is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit. It lies along the north coast of the island, about 70 km west of Rethymno and 145 km (90 mi) west of Heraklion. Despite being heavily bombed during World War II, Chania's Old Town is considered the most beautiful urban district on Crete, especially the crumbling Venetian harbour.
3. Heraklion Archaeological Museum
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is a museum located in Heraklion on Crete. It is one of the greatest museums in Greece and the best in the world for Minoan art, as it contains the most notable and complete collection of artifacts of the Minoan civilization of Crete.

Heraklion is the major city and capital of the largest Greek island of Crete. Its Archaeological Museum holds the remains of the 3000-year old Minoan civilization, which grew around the nearby legendary palace of Knossos (of Minotaur fame), as well as Byzantine churches and a well-preserved Venetian wall and fortress from the 15th century.
1. Ancient Knossos
Knossos is the site of the most important and best known Minoan palace complex in Crete. It is located some 5 km south of Heraklion. According to tradition, Knossos was the seat of the legendary Cretan king Minos. The Palace is also connected with further legends, such as the myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, as well as the story of Daidalos and Ikaros. Excavation has revealed that the site was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period (7000-3000 B.C.) until Roman times.
