Midsummer festival in Lithuania | Joninės | Rasos

Summer solstice is one of the oldest and most popular celebrations in Lithuania, it even has multiple names: Joninės, Rasos, Kupolinės.
This year's party (2023) at Kernavė was great and hundreds if not thousands of people attended.

Also the event in Kernavė was quite international - there was a lot of information in English and there were many visitors from abroad.

Each party around the country is different - other places might have more modern music and rituals, more people or less people. So everyone can choose what they prefer, or host their own party ????

O NAS:

Witajcie! Witajcie! Na kanale podróżniczym Wędrownych Motyli. Jesteśmy Ania i Marcin.

Inspirować i uczyć. Łączyć ładne kadry z ciekawymi opowieściami. No i najważniejsze dla niektórych: Relaksować i inspirować.

To chyba tyle. Trudno nie przyznać, że bardzo nam zależy, by ten kanał się rozwijał. Dlatego każde dobre słowo i polecenie będzie mile widziane

All Saints Day in LITHUANIA 2023 | Vėlinės

On November 1st, Christians worldwide celebrate All Saints’ Day, a solemn holiday that holds special significance in Lithuania. This day is dedicated to honoring deceased family members and remembering the Saints of the Catholic Church.

While modern observances of this day involve visiting cemeteries, attending church services, and gathering with family, the roots of this holiday and some of its traditions can be traced back to ancient times. It is fascinating to see how these ancient traditions have intertwined with the Christian faith in Lithuania today. Even now, most Lithuanians refer to All Saints’ Day as “Vėlinės,” which was a pagan holiday that celebrated the souls of ancestors with feasts and rituals. Although it is unclear how this holiday was originally observed, it is known that the feasting and rituals occurred over the course of several weeks. In ancient writings, this extended ritual is referred to as Ilgės or pangs of love or longings, reflecting its long duration. In Eastern Lithuania, this ritual was known as Dziedu days or old men's days, in reference to beggars who were asked to pray for the souls of the departed.

The traditions associated with honoring the dead are deeply rooted in the belief

Užgavėnės is a Lithuanian festival that takes place during the seventh week before Easter (Ash Wednesday). Its name in English means the time before Lent. The celebration corresponds to Roman Catholic holiday traditions in other parts of the world, such as Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, and Carnaval.

Back to the Baltics : Summer Solstice in Lithuania (2020)

[ENGLISH BELLOW]

Back to the Baltics : Summer Solstice in Lithuania (2020)
Leaving for a new trip back to the Baltics was put into brackets due to the global epidemic that has been raging our planet for the past couple of months. We nevertheless decided, in a rather hasty style and with no prior preparations, to leave once again and pursue our musical quest to uncover the intriguing topic of the “Singing Revolution” and other vocal traditions of these countries.
This episode retraces the beginning of this new adventure in the Republic of Lithuania where we arrived for the Summer Solstice celebrations.
At a few different moments of the video, we can hear some so-called “Sutartines”; which are a very ancient typical Lithuanian form of multi-part singing, transmitted orally from generation to generation.
During our first trip in 2019, we made a video exclusively presenting this form of singing which you can check out by clicking on the following link :

Lithuania's Happy Paganism ????????

Lithuania survived communism and preserved its Catholic identity. But Lithuania's enduring pagan past has survived both communism and Catholicism. Baltic paganism is very close to the ancient Indo-European paganism and much of it survives in the folk customs of the Lithuanian people. This film looks at the glorious nature of the ex-Soviet state and examines some of the spiritual customs that have been preserved in this, the last country in Europe to convert to Christianity.

Summer Solstice (Joninės) 2014 in Kernave, Lithuania

The longest day and shortest night in Lithuania is also known as Joninės which is the nameday of Jonai and Janinos. Some dress in traditional costumes, decorate their heads with colourful wild flower wreaths and greet the shortest night with folk dancing and singing.

The culture reserve and historic capital of the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania, Kernavė, is most famous for its stunning landscape with historic forthills spread in the valley of river Neris. It is a great tourist attraction and archeological site where many different celebrations take place all year round and I'd definitely recommend planning a stop there for at least an hour or two.

The Bernardine Cemetery (Bernardinų kapinės) Užupis Republic - Vilnius, Lithuania - 4K

Best hotels in Vilnius, Lithuania:

About The Bernardine Cemetery (Bernardinų kapinės) Užupis Republic - Vilnius, Lithuania:

The Bernardine Cemetery (Lithuanian: Bernardinų kapinės, Polish: Cmentarz Bernadyński), is one of the three oldest cemeteries in Vilnius, Lithuania. It covers about 38,000 square metres and has an estimated 14,000 burial sites. It was established in 1810 by the Bernardine monks of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, just east of the city center in the Užupis district, and is situated on an embankment of the Vilnia river. Its development was a consequence of Tsarist authorities of the Russian Empire prohibiting burying the dead near churches. The residents of Vilnius moved the cemetery to what was then the outskirts of the city.

The Columbaria were built on the east and west sides of the cemetery. The cemetery was expanded in 1860. After the Second World War the cemetery was abandoned for the most part and began to deteriorate. It was closed in the 1970s and since then until recently it had remained almost unchanged. Many of the oldest graves had sunk into the ground and became covered in moss. The eastern columbarium had almost entirely disappeared. Restoration and reconstruction of its buildings and monuments, including the western columbarium, began in the late 1990s.

Beginning in 2005, on the initiative of the Adam Mickiewicz Polish-Lithuanian foundation together with the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites (one of the main initiators of the project was Andrzej Przewoźnik, a Polish historian who died in the airplane crash in Smolensk in 2010), conservation work on the cemetery (known in Polish as Cmentarz Bernardyński na Zarzeczu) commenced with the aim of restoring the necropolis for 2010, the two hundredth anniversary of the founding. The restoration work was funded by private donors as well as through a joint effort by the Polish and Lithuanian governments. More than a hundred historic tombstones have been renovated, most of them those of Polish and Lithuanian participants of the January Uprising, Home Army soldiers and the past faculty of the Stefan Batory University. Further renovations are planned.

Numerous famous scientists, painters and Vilnius University, intellectuals, professors and other renowned people are buried there including:

Helena Dzierżyńska (1849–1896), Felix Dzerzhinsky's mother
Stanisław Fleury (1861–1915), Polish-Lithuanian artist and photographer
Stanisław Bonifacy Jundziłł (1761–1847), Polish-Lithuanian botanist and florist, professor of Vilnius University and head of the Botanical Garden
Kazimieras Kairiūkštis (1886–1918), Lithuanian engineer
Vytautas Kairiūkštis (1890–1961), Lithuanian painter
Włodzimierz Mazurkiewicz – Polish pilot and engineer

Valdas Herkus Neimantas (1966–2005), the main designer of Užupis Republic
Zachariasz Niemczewski(1766-1820) – Polish-Lithuanian professor of mathematics
