Ramana Fortress - a fortress of the XIV century (according to the diapers, the 16th century), located in the Ramana settlement (kend ramana) of Baku . The height of the rectangular central tower in the middle of the castle yard is 15 meters. The tower has four floors. The floors of the 2nd and 3rd floors were made of wood. The floors are connected by a winding staircase. There are jokes on the walls. The tower and exterior walls are completed with mashikuls. The exact time of the construction of the white stone fortress is unknown. According to the construction techniques and plan features, the castle is believed to have been built in the middle of the 14th century. It was probably built for defensive purposes and was used as a castle during the Shirvanshah state .

and it rises above the courtyard of the castle. It is possible to climb the castle walls and see the village through these stairs.
The castle in the village of Ramana, like the castle in Mardakan , is located in a different natural environment - on a rock. The irregular polygonal shape of the outer frame of the walls was determined by the contour of the upper area of the relief. Strong castle walls are a natural continuation of rocky slopes. Only in the plane of the wall in the eastern part, which is relatively easy to approach, is there a bulging head with an axial opening.

Absheron Castles// Baku, Azerbaijan
• The Gala State Historical Ethnographic Reserve is a complex of museums in Baku. Inside there are three different types of museums: Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in the Open Air. Castle Museum (partly open-air), and the Museum of Antiques. The museum is 1.5 ha in area and has rock paintings, pottery, household items, jewelry, weapons, and coins that belong to the ancient times of Azerbaijan. In this museum, there are more than 2,000 different archaeological and architectural monuments – mounds, seats of ancient settlements, burial places dating back to thousands of years ago. It is located in Qala, 40km far from Baku and bears the name of this district. Gala- State Historical Ethnographic Reserve is devoted to the history of the Absheron Peninsula. As a result of archaeological excavations, it is feasible to get a picture of the lifestyle of the Azerbaijani people from ancient times to the Middle Ages. There is an 18th-century tandoor, two underground passages belonging to the 10th and 15th centuries. Besides these, old houses, portable tents made of animal skins, stone and straw houses with domes, an old smithy, a pottery workshop, and a thresher can be found. All these can be touched and photographed. There are 243 historic-architectural monuments (mosques, ancient living buildings, baths, coffee beans, walls of ancient houses, etc.) in the Gala Museum. There are also 400-year-old pistachio trees, figs, figs, olive trees, flowers and other decorative items in the territory of the reserve
• Mardakan Fortress- Quadrangular castle –is a historic castle located in Mardakan, Baku. It is one of the most noticeable castles in Mardakan. The castle was built in the middle of the 12th century by Akhsitan I, son of the Manuchihr III. It was erected after the victory of Akhsitan I. The castle was used as a shelter and observation point of feudal. The castle was built in a quadrangular form. It is divided into 5 tiers. The castle consists of 6 rooms. The inner courtyard of the castle is 28×25 m. The height of the tower is 22 meters. The thickness of it is 2.10 meters at the lower part and 1.60 meters at the upper portion. There are 76 stairs in the castle. 108 empty wells in the yard were used to store food. There is also a water well of 25 meters when entering the entrance of the castle
• Mardakan- Round Tower. Round Tower is a castle located in Mardakan near Baku. The castle is also called Shikh fortress by local residents. At the top of the gate of the tower, there are three inscriptions written in Arabic on a large rectangular stone layer. According to the first inscription on the castle, it was built during the reign of Fariburz III. The second inscription shows that the owner of the Round Mardakan fortress was Ihsac bin Kakuli and it was built in 1232. The third inscription indicates that it was built by architect Abd al-Majid Masood oghlu. The height of the Round Mardakan Tower is 16 meters. It is built of limestone and lime solution. The fortress surrounding the tower consists of a square-shaped yard (25×25 m), surrounded by stone walls, seven meters high on each side. At the corners of the fortress wall, there are towers, railing, and watchtowers. The tower is round in the plan and it gets narrow upward.
• Ramana Castle. Ramana Tower – is a tower in Ramana village of Baku and dated back to the 12th century. The height of the tower is 15 meters. The exact construction date of the tower, which is built of white stone, is not known. It is considered that the tower was built for the purpose of defense and used as a castle during the Shirvanshahs ’reign. There are two stairs for walking up to the tower walls. It is possible to walk up by spiral stairs from the inner side of the tower to a corridor, which was built about 3 meters (outside of the tower. The other stone stair walks up to the upper side of the tower from the garden. By means of these stairs, it is possible to walk up to the tower walls and look at the village.

Welcome to another weekly travel video on the Polmeetsworld Travelchannel.
This week the capital of Azerbaijan BAKU.
Baku lays at the Caspian sea, it's a very modern city with some very modern buidlings from which the Flame Towers are the ones standing out. Why Flames because Azerbaijan is the land of fire. It goes back to the times of the Zoroastrianism in the Persian region. People worshipping fire.
These days Azerbaijan is know for oil and gas, so maybe it represents a gasfire flame. Another modern building at the outskirts of Baku is the Socar Tower which is also in the shape of a flame. Socar is a Azeri gas company.
Why is it called the land of fire ?
Because the people who used to live here before the Islam and Soviet times where Zoroastrians, Zoroastrianism was a type of religion that had influences from the old Persian empire and the ancient Indian Hindu time. Zoroastrians were worshipping fire and near Baku I visited their fire temple of Atashgah.
What did I do in Baku ?
I visited the old town as well as the modern part of the city with the Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Center by architect Zaha Hadid
In the old town I visited mosques, caravanserai, Maiden Tower from which you have a view over the city of Baku.
Places visited outside Baku but near the capital on a half day trip were : Atashgah, burning mountain Yanartag and the Ramana Castle.
Outside Baku, Azerbaijan is different , landscape, roads , houses it all changes and it seems there is a big gap between those who live their lives in the great capital city and those who live in the countryside.
I saw oil fields and the impact the black gold has on the environment and found this more interesting to see all these oil derricks going up and down pumping it up out of the oil wells

Baku, the capital and commercial hub of Azerbaijan, is a low-lying city with coastline along the Caspian Sea. It's famed for its medieval walled old city, which contains the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a vast royal complex, and the iconic stone Maiden Tower.

Square tower ancient castle in Mardakan settlement of Baku. The four corners of the castle in the middle of the fourteenth century, was built by Akhsitan III, son of the Manuchohr. I Akhsitan tower erected in honor of the brilliant victory over the enemy. Feudal castle was used as a shelter and a guard station. The tower height of 22 meters, a depth of 2.10 meters below the top of the 1.60 meters. The interior courtyard is 28X25m. Inside the tower is divided into 5 levels.
Baku Maiden Tower One Of The Best Places In Azerbaijan
The Maiden Tower, also known locally as Giz Galasi, located in the Old City, Baku, in Azerbaijan, was built in the 12th century as part of the walled city.
Baku historian Sara Ashurbayli calculated that the tower must have been built in the 4th to 6th centuries AD. This was because of the tower’s unusual construction, the difference between the stone used in the tower and the stone of the medieval city surrounding it and the various legends about the Maiden Tower.
Another group of researchers think that the tower was built in the 11th century. The reason is the inscription 14 meters high on the south wall of the tower which reads Qubbeye Masud ibn Davud in old Arabic script. Epigraphist Mashadikhanim Nemat studied the inscription and explained the word qübbə as qüllə or tower, so Masud ibn Davud would have been the tower’s architect. The architect of the 14th century Mardakan Tower, Abdulmajid ibn Masud, is thought to be his descendant.
