CRAZY Peruvian Cemetery ⚰️ Graveyards in Latin America ???? Tombs and Crypts ????????

I have very mixed feelings about this place, but it's definitely worth a visit!

Corrections:
1. Hours are 9-5pm with late night tour options available (booked in advance)
2. Its 10 soles entry for each adult (Around 2.50 USD)

Good:
1. Amazing artwork. Statues, tombs, all amazing! See for yourself in the video!
2. Its a very big area! It can take 3-4 hours to explore fully.

Bad:
1. The neighborhood is VERY sketchy. Get an Uber/Taxi door to door. Sometimes it's hard to find an available taxi when leaving, so be careful.
2. People working there (cleaners, gardeners etc) try to take you on unofficial tours and ask for as much as 30 soles from you. Avoid it. They know nothing that you cannot find yourself. You are given a map with the ticket.
3. People pretend to work there and try to take you on a tour, then lead you to the far corner of the cemetery where there is nothing. Its super sketchy, just avoid anybody like this. If you want a tour, ask at the ticket office.
4. Maintenance is very very poor. Its not well looked after. Overgrown trees, holes in the floor, crypts falling apart, a poor state of disrepair, even the crypt of the heroes is missing glass on the main door.

Info:
1. The tomb of the heroes (the biggest building) is only open during July, the time of the independence. Its not a deal breaker though if you miss this.
2. You buy tickets across the street from Gate 3. If you have family buried here, you can access for free. Its like a prison, everything is locked up tight! You have to show your ticket to the guard to access the place.

The Presbítero Matías Maestro Cemetery Museum (formerly called General Cemetery of Lima and commonly called just Presbítero Maestro ) is a historical monument located in the Barrios Altos ( Cercado de Lima ), city of Lima , capital of Peru . Inaugurated on May 31, 1808, it was the first pantheon in the city since burials were previously held in one of the different churches. It was named in honor of its designer, the priest Matías Maestro .

Its 766 mausoleums and 92 historical monuments of the most refined architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries keep the remains of some prominent Peruvian men and women, as well as the Crypt of the Heroes monument, a mausoleum erected in honor of the heroes of the Pacific War.

IQUIQUE CHILE | Iquique is a coastal city in northern Chile, to the west of the Atacama Desert.

Although the city was founded in the 16th century, there is evidence of habitation in the area by the Chango people as early as 7,000 BC. During colonial times, Iquique was part of the Viceroyalty of Peru as much of South America was at the time, and remained part of Peruvian territory until the end of the 19th century. Iquique's early development was due in large part to the discovery of mineral riches, particularly the presence of large deposits of sodium nitrate in the Atacama Desert (then part of Peruvian territory).

In July 1835, Charles Darwin, during his voyage on the Beagle, traveled to Iquique and described it as a town very much in want of everyday necessities, such as water and firewood. These necessities had to be brought in from considerable distances. Darwin also visited the saltpeter works.

The city has been devastated by several earthquakes, including the 1868 Arica earthquake, the 1877 Iquique earthquake, and the 2005 Tarapacá earthquake. The 2014 Iquique earthquake occurred with a moment magnitude of 8.2 on April 1, 2014.
Naval Battle of Iquique during the War of the Pacific (1879–1884).

Territorial disputes between Bolivia and Chile triggered the War of the Pacific in 1879. The Battle of Iquique was fought in the harbor of Iquique on May 21, 1879, now commemorated as Navy Day, an annual public holiday in Chile. The outcome of the war gave Chile this portion of the Peruvian territory.

Over the years there was substantial emigration from other parts of Chile to this area which was called the Norte Grande. In subsequent years the further exportation of Chilean saltpeter (mainly to European countries) significantly helped in the development of the city, attracting foreigners and rapidly expanding housing projects.

Mars 96 launched by Russia in 1996, but failed to leave Earth orbit, and re-entered the atmosphere a few hours later. The two RTGs onboard carried in total 200 g of plutonium and are assumed to have survived reentry as they were designed to do. They are thought to now lie somewhere in a northeast-southwest running oval 320 km (199 mi) long by 80 km (50 mi) wide which is centred 32 km (20 mi) east of Iquique, Chile.[3]

Prior to becoming Chilean territory, Iquique was home to some of the greatest Peruvian heroes, namely Alfonso Ugarte (who was elected mayor in 1876), Ramon Zavala, a rich saltpeter entrepreneur; Guillermo Billinghurst, later President of Peru (who after being overthrown in 1914 came to Iquique – then already under Chilean rule – to live out his last years), and Ramon Castilla, three times president of Peru, who was born in San Lorenzo de Tarapacá and died in the Desert of Tiviliche, Tarapacá, who lived in Iquique during his mandate as Governor of Tarapacá in 1825.

Plaza de Armas / The Plaza Mayor - VIDEO TOUR (Lima, Peru)

Welcome to Lima's Main Square in the historical district! Plaza de Armas, or known as: The Plaza Mayor is full of histroy waiting for you to explore!

The Plaza Mayor de Lima, or Plaza de Armas de Lima, is considered one of the birthplaces of the city of Lima, as well as the core of the city. Located in the Historic Centre of Lima, it is surrounded by the Government Palace, Lima Metropolitan Cathedral, Archbishop's Palace of Lima, the Municipal Palace, and the Palacio de la Unión.

Overview
The Plaza de Armas is surrounded by the Jirón Junín, Jirón de la Unión, Jirón Huallaga, and the Jirón Carabaja streets.

In 1523, King Charles I of Spain mandated the Procedures for the creation of cities in the New World. These procedures indicated that after outlining a city's plan, growth should follow a grid centered on the square shape of the plaza.

On the day of the foundation of the city, January 18, 1535, the conquistador Francisco Pizarro, conforming to established procedure, designated a location to build the plaza. Later, Pizarro and Nicolás de Rivera, the city's first mayor, toured the city's location and split parcels. Pizarro, taking advantage of his title of founder and governor, took a large parcel of land between the north side of the plaza and the Rímac River. The lot to the south of the plaza was designated to be a church, the western lot was to be the site of a city council, and the rest of the lots were divided among the rest of the conquistadors.

The 17th-century historian Bernabé Cobo said of the plaza:

...it is the finest and most well-formed that I have ever seen, even in Spain. It occupies an entire block, with the width of four streets on one side and four streets on the other, and with all four sides it measures more than two thousand feet; it is very ample...

Subsequently, the viceroy Diego López de Zúñiga y Velasco, count of Nieva, proposed the gallows, which had previously been located at the centre of the plaza, be moved nearer to the river to the location which is now the Desamparados train station. In place of it, a new water fountain was built at the centre of the plaza. The gallows were returned to the south side of the plaza on the Callejón de Petateros.

The first water fountain built on the plaza was constructed by the viceroy Francisco de Toledo, and was inaugurated on October 21, 1578. It consisted of a baluster and an elevated bowl, and in it had eight pipes through which water fell into the bowl on the next level. A ball at the top of the fountain dispersed water back onto the lower levels. The seal of the city was inscribed on this ball.

During the colonial era, the plaza served as a market, bull[4] fighting ring, and the city gallows. The plaza also became home to the auto-da-fé in which the Inquisition occurred. The tribunal of the Inquisition had one of its three courts located in Lima. The first conviction occurred on November 15, 1573, and this was the first heretic to be tried and executed in the New World.

In 1622, the Cathedral of Lima is completed. This church still stands today on the plaza.

In the early nineteenth century, chef Juan José Cabezudo had a food stall in the Escribanos portal, a place very close to the plaza, where he served typical Peruvian dishes, including tamales.

In 1821, José de San Martín proclaimed the Independence of Peru on this plaza. After this historic event, the flag of the new republic was paraded around the plaza.

In 1855, President Ramón Castilla inaugurated the first public gas lighting system which were first installed on the light posts of the plaza. Also at this time, gardens were planted on the plaza as up until this time it was made of pavement. In 1860, the first rail ways for trams were installed on the plaza.

In 1922, construction of the Archbishop's Palace of Lima was completed. In 1938, the Government Palace was completed and in 1944 the Municipal Palace was completed.
