What to do in Radviliškis, Lithuania | Travel guide
Radviliškis - a small town and district hidden in between the bigger cities Šiauliai and Panevėžys. It is one of those places people just pass by, but there are a few spots to see here and Radviliškis district made the most of it - they are very easily accessible.
Unfortunately I had quite a hard time filming this location, as the only day available for me was a very rainy one, but that didn't stop me and the rain gave me a different view in some places. Lithuania really needed that rain though, because there was quite a draught everywhere.

Šiauliai is a city in northern Lithuania. It's a gateway to the Hill of Crosses, just northeast. A place of pilgrimage, the site was established in the 19th century as a symbol of resistance to Russian rule. It now includes more than 100,000 crosses. In the city center, the Aušros Museum’s several branches include the Photography Museum, with old Lithuanian photos and a camera obscura, and the Bicycle Museum.

Radviliskis windmill | Interview
The mill is believed to be a witness to the battles against the Bermontinians. We do not know what its actual role was, but during the fighting, all the 10 or so mills in the area at the time must have been used for military purposes, i.e. defending positions, artillery observation posts and so on.
The battle between the Lithuanian army and the Russian Western Volunteer Army, also known as the Kolchakiniks, but better known as the Bermontists, took place in Radviliškis on 21-22 November 1919. The 1st Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment was assigned to take Radviliskis. The clashes lasted about 38 hours.
The enemy met the Lithuanians with cannon, mortar and heavy machine gun fire, especially fierce battles took place at fortified positions such as the mills or the stone fences of the cemetery on Maironis Street.
In the evening of the second day of the attack, the Lithuanian troops managed to capture Radviliskis at 17:15, using the forces in reserve.
When fleeing from Radviliskis, the Bermontists left behind a large war loot, which was quickly transported from Radviliskis towards Kaunas. These treasures were successfully used for the development and strengthening of the army.
The War of Independence and the battles against the Bermontists were one of the forms of the Great War that had not yet ended in Lithuania. The victory achieved over the military elite of the time instilled confidence in the army and society and laid a solid foundation for the further development of Lithuanian statehood. The Lithuanian army at Radviliskis created a miracle that should be used to foster and develop the citizenship of the Lithuanian population, to be used to inculcate values in young people, and to further shape and present the image of the Lithuanian nation as a nation with a true fighter's gene in the world community.
