The ULTIMATE SICILY ROAD TRIP - Taormina, Ortigia, Agrigento, Erice & MORE (Italy’s Hidden Gems)

Welcome to Sicily, Italy's southern island nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean. While Italy attracts millions of tourists each year, many tend to focus on its more iconic cities and regions. Sicily is by no means a hidden gem, but it certainly provides a more authentic and less crowded Italian experience. With its alluring mix of ancient ruins, charming coastal towns, and delicious cuisine, this is the Italy we've been looking for. We are so lucky that Tommy’s parents are joining us on this unforgettable roadtrip as we go beyond the usual tourist hotspots and immerse ourselves in the Sicilian culture.

Our first destination was the enchanting town of Taormina. In this picturesque, cliffside town, there was so much to do. We visited Isola Bella, a stunning island just off the coast, indulged in incredible dishes like the iconic Bam Bar granitas and pistachio pasta, and delved into the rich history at the ancient amphitheater.

We then headed to Ortigia, a charming island brimming with character and history. Strolling through the streets, we discovered the vibrant outdoor market, where local vendors displayed an array of fresh produce, artisanal crafts, spices, and FRESH seafood. The market's lively atmosphere was sensory overload, and we couldn't resist sampling some of the incredible seafood. The culinary scene in Ortigia, especially its exceptional seafood, makes it an unmissable highlight on any Sicily road trip.

Agrigento's Valley of the Temples stands as an essential stop on a Sicily journey. This ancient archaeological site has well-preserved Greek ruins that transport visitors back in time. We went at sunset for ideal lighting and a great atmosphere.

Erice, a hilltop town in Sicily, is a must-visit destination. With its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, the town offers a charming and historic atmosphere. We tried the local cookies, which were so yummy. The town's unique blend of history and culinary delights makes it a memorable stop on any Sicilian itinerary.

We spent a couple nights in Castellammare del Golfo, a charming town on the northwest coast of Sicily.

We ended our road trip spending few days by the sea near Messina, providing a perfect place to reflect on our incredible Sicilian adventure.

First Thoughts on Agrigento, Sicily | Cheapest Arancini in Italy

Welcome to Agrigento, everybody! It's our first time in this city and this is the first part of our series exploring the beautiful city in the West of the Italian Island Sicily.

We started our trip this morning by jumping in our car and driving about an hour to the south from Trapani - a west coast town, where we have been staying for the last month.

The moment we have arrived in the city we felt extremely hungry, so we decided to stop by a little sandwich shop, however, due to Siesta it was closed (this really happens to us a lot).

We decided to not waste any time and headed off to see the medieval Cathedral of Agrigento but as the cathedral was booked for the wedding, we decided to not disturb the newlyweds and continued exploring the narrow streets telling you a bit more of the so much related to Ancient Greek history of the city.

After a little walk through the hilly town, we finally found a little local coffee bar in the center of the city, where we got ourselves probably the cheapest arancini in town!

As the sun was setting down, we had to leave the beautiful city of yellow streets and head of to one of the most amazing places in the region - Scala Dei Turchi or Turkish stairs.

Stay tuned for the new episode where our adventure in Agrigento continues in search of Scala Dei Turchi or Turkish stairs.

Spoiler alert - new episode is coming up on Tuesday STAY TUNED!

In this video I explore Sicily, Italy. I visit towns in the South East region of Sicily, including Catania, Noto, Syracuse and Ortigia. Sicily is a fascinating island in the South of Italy, with a rich mix of culture, history, food and the friendliest locals in Italy! I explore the bustling fish market in Catania, as well as try some popular Catanese dishes like pasta alla norma and eggplant caponata, I also feel adventurous enough to try the Catania specialty, horse meat burgers! I then visit the beautiful region of Noto and do some wine tasting of the famous nero d'avola red wine at a beautiful vineyard. Noto is a beautiful town known for it's sandstone cathedrals. I also visit the seaside town of Syracuse and Ortigia which have some incredible ancient Greek sites like the archeological park of Syracuse.

A HUGE thank you to Renato for such a fun tour of Catania, I highly recommend his tour. Here is the link:

Canicattì and Agrigento: a bit of culture does not hurt

We move to Agrigento province, where we could admire the famous Scala dei Turchi, spend some family time in Canicattì and get some knowledge of ancient Greece and Italy by roaming through the temples of Agrigento. Finally we even have the chance to have a look at Corleone, the small town famous for the movie The Godfather.

Seeking Sicily a book by John Keahey

Seeking Sicily: A Cultural Journey through Myth and Reality in the Heart of the Mediterranean is the title of John's next book, a travel narrative that captures Sicily and its various cultures through his eyes and the eyes of Sicilian authors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, most notably Leonardo Sciascia (1921-1989) of Racalmuto, province of Agrigento. As John travels around the Mediterranean's largest -- and most conquered -- island, he will share stories and photos of the places he visits and the people he meets.
