The Carretera Austral is a mostly unpaved road that connects the most rural part of Patagonia in the very south of Chile. Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find.
But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded.
After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins.
To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:

Chiloé Island is located in Chile in the Los Lagos Region, south of Puerto Montt. Chiloé is the land of myths, legends, traditions and gastronomy.
Chiloé Island is the second largest island in Chile (after the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego), the largest island completely within Chile, and the fourth largest in South America.
This island is known for its multicolored houses (often on stilts, the palafitos), and for its many and characteristic wooden churches, sixteen of which are classified by UNESCO as World Heritage.

Quellón and Churches of Chiloé Chile
World Heritage Site (Dec 2012)
The Churches of Chiloé in Chile's Chiloé Archipelago are a unique architectural phenomenon in the Americas and one of the most prominent buildings of Chilota architecture.
The locations of these churches are mainly in Municipalities of Castro, Chonchi, Dalcahue, Puqueldón, Quemchi, and Quinchao, Chiloé Province, X Region de los Lagos
I spent my entire time alone travelling from one beautiful and unique church and a church ground to another amazingly beautiful and majestic church.
Seeing it is believing the great and deep values of these beautiful churches.
I did not carry a guide book, only came across this location during my travels and because of speaking to person from these islands who were sitting next to me on the flight from Punta Arenas to Santiago.
So I took the Opportunity to get off the flight and spend two days travelling in these Islands.
Our life is a journey, embrace all things good along the way.

Chile - Chiloé - Three Towns
As part of our visit to the island of Chiloé we visit three towns: Dalcahue, Ancud and Chepu. Chiloë is known for its distinctive folklore, mythology, potatoes, cuisine and unique architecture without much contact from the rest of Chile or the Western World. We see churches, fishermen and farmers at work as well as rural markets.
We visited Chile on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our channel for hundreds of clips.

Chiloé en 5 Días | Los Secretos de la Isla Grande | Que hacer y donde ir | Parte 1
Llegamos a la Isla grande de Chiloé en Septiembre 2022, aquí recorreríamos principalmente el centro de la Isla, comenzando por Castro y sus alrededores. Para luego aventurarnos en uno de sus grandes parques, el Tepuhueico. Nuestra misión en la Isla era clara, recorrerla y poder capturar en fotografía e imagen al Pudú, el zorro de darwin o chilote y la Ranita de Darwin.

Viaje desde la capital de Chiloé, sur de Chile, a la ciudad más austral del archipiélago. Entre ambos puntos hay 90 kilómetros de distancia. El viaje fue realizado en un típico día de invierno.

BELLO VIAJE EN FIORDOS! Puerto Chacabuco - Quellón en barco QUEULAT (Naviera Austral)

Bellísimo viaje en fiordos de 'Aysén', en el sur de Chile, parte de la Patagonia y la zona de la mítica Carretera Austral (Ruta 7). Hice el viaje completo del barco 'QUEULAT' de la empresa 'Naviera Austral', realizando la Ruta Cordillera que recorre desde 'Puerto Chacabuco' hasta la punta sur de 'Chiloé', 'Quellón', pasando por varios canales y fiordos, además de conectar con puertos pequeños que solo tienen este barco como medio de transporte público. La ruta demora cerca de 30 horas.
El viaje comienza en 'Puerto Chacabuco', lugar pequeño que sirve para conectar a las personas de 'Puerto Aysén' y 'Coyhaique', las principales ciudades de esta región. El barco circula por el fiordo de 'Aysén', lugar que tiene hermosas montañas y volcanes de la Cordillera de los Andes junto al mar.
En todo el viaje vimos puertos pequeños, arcoíris, montañas hermosas, fauna marina. Es uno de los viajes más hermosos que he visto en mi vida. Incluso, en el viaje aparece el mítico perro 'Corbata' (Q.E.P.D) que era un perro marinero, él subía siempre al barco y era conocido por los pasajeros. El trayecto, además de recibir a pasajeros, tiene vehículos y transporte de carga, pues este barco conecta y comunica a todos estos puertos.
El barco 'QUEULAT' tiene capacidad para 285 pasajeros, 55 vehículos, fue construido en Guangzhou (China) y tiene IMO 9745421. La empresa 'Naviera Austral' tiene varios servicios de barco como transporte público en el sur de Chile.

Panamericana Ep30 - From Quellón to Queilén, Chiloé - a breakdown, a BMW G650 and two BMG 1250 GS.
As you can see in the last two episodes Urma sometimes was loosing power whilst riding.
It was raining a lot the days since it appeared and I didn't go and find out why and just kept riding.
How lucky that I met two fellow BMW riders, Rodrigo and Jaime, on the ferry to Quellon. Rodrigo is a motorcycle mechanic.
I expected the ferry to arrive 10h earlier and planned to ride to Queilen after the anchor dropped in Quellon. But we arrived at late evening and it got dark and rainy and on top there was a cerfew. Jaime and Rodrigo invited me to stay the night at their cabin for the night and to ride the next day together to Queilen.
Just 400m after we started Urma (my bike) stopped working, all power gone, nothing. After pulling it apart we found a broken soldering at the main switch. Of course this happens on a weekend end hahaha.
Jaime went to into Quellon to find a solder iron so we can fix it at the place we stood overnight.
So after a 2h delay we started to ride the South of the Island Chiloe. It was raining most of the time, but given the season and geographical position, that was no surprise at all. The ride was still beautiful and when we arrived at this little gem of a hostal I decided to spend a few more days there whilst Rodrigo and Jaime went on North to ride home.

Viaje QUELLÓN - PUERTO CISNES en Sur de Chile | NAVIERA AUSTRAL, barco JACAF IMO 8969331
Viaje por los canales patagónicos realizado en el barco JACAF de la empresa 'Naviera Austral'. Este barco hizo el servicio 'Quellón - Melinka - Puerto Cisnes' de 12 horas de duración, cruzando el Golfo del Corcovado y algunos canales chilenos. Quería hacer este viaje desde que vi que unos amigos lo hicieron. En Quellón, muestro cómo es la oficina de venta de pasajes, el proceso de embarque para subir al barco.
El barco 'JACAF' anteriormente estuvo trabajando en Grecia, con el nombre de 'Thassos VII'. El barco cuenta con 246 butacas 'Semi Cama', capacidad para 55 vehículos. Se muestra el interior del barco, junto con la flota de 'Naviera Austral' y el proceso de compra de los boletos de ferry. El barco fue fabricado en el astillero 'Makroglu & Tselmis' de Atenas.
Al final del video, les muestro mis primeros pasos en Puerto Cisnes caminando por la plaza principal, la costanera y un sendero muy bonito llamado 'Virgen de las Rosas', donde hay un mirador de esta hermosa ciudad. Este viaje fue presentado por los libros 'Corte de Cinta' y 'Los Héroes del Tiempo'.
