Mauritius Travel Guide - Paradise on Earth
Mauritius is a small, multi-cultural island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, NorthEast of Reunion and southeast of the Seychelles. Mauritius is rightly famed for its sapphire waters, powder-white beaches and luxury resorts. But there’s so much more attraction to Mauritius than the beach, and it's the kind of place that rewards even the smallest attempts at exploration. There’s hiking in the forested and mountainous interior and world-class diving and snorkelling offshore.
The island of Mauritius was first discovered by Arab sailors, at some time in the 9th century, the exact date is unknown. At that time the island was uninhabited and covered in a dense forest. The Arab sailors were not interested in settling on the island which they named Dina Arobi or Dinarobin. Diogo Fernandes Pereira, a Portuguese sailor found the island in 1505 and decided to give it the name of Cerne. However, the Portuguese did not settle permanently on the island either.
The first to colonise the island were the Dutch. They took possession of the island in 1598. The Dutch settlers landed on a bay in the south-eastern part of the island which was named Warwyck Haven after the commander VanWarwyck, the bay is now known as Grand Port. Although Mauritius doesn't have a huge Chinese population, the Chinese Lunar New Year is still celebrated as an official public holiday with red colours and firecrackers predominating.

Mauritius does not have an official language, but the main language of government is English. As such, all government administrative documents are in the Commonwealth variety of English, which is also used as the prime medium of instruction in public schools. Mauritius has only two seasons, winter and summer. There is not much temperature difference between the two seasons of the year. The climate on the central plateau is cooler than on the coastal areas.

It’s our last day on Mauritius and we’re sad to leave! In this video we make the most of our last day and explore the best things to do around Mahebourg. Mahebourg is a town on the east coast of Mauritius, which is the least visited side of the island. Before driving to Mahebourg we spent some time in a resort in Quatre Cocos, as you can find some good deals in this area. We then check in to our guesthouse in Mahebourg, try manioc biscuits that are famous on Mauritius, head to a restaurant that is supposed to serve the best Biryani on Mauritius (it is delicious) and then drive to Blue Bay for a great spontaneous snorkelling trip. This was the perfect way to end our Mauritius road trip and we hope you enjoyed coming along!

One of the key features of the resort is its proximity to Ile aux Cerfs, one of the famous islands frequented by tour groups and day trippers. Four Seasons has a private beach club on Ile aux Cerfs, which is accessible by a quick boat ride from the resort.
We enjoyed a delicious welcome drink of lemongrass and pineapple while we waited for the check in to wrap up and were quickly taken on a tour of the property on the way to the villa. The bellman told us everything we needed to know about the grounds, restaurants and facilities on the way in the buggy.
All 136 rooms at Four Seasons are villa-style with private patios and outdoor bathrooms. We were checked into the Island Beach Pool Villa, a 1,130 square foot private villa with direct access to the Quiet Beach.
The bathroom is, as always, my personal favorite part of the villa. The double vanity faces the view, but the privacy screen is available if you prefer a more separated bathroom from the bedroom. To one side, you will find the walk-in closet and the other has a separate toilet room. There is a bathtub complete with Diptyque bath salts as well as the indoor shower that faces the private outdoor area with glass surrounding the back wall. Outside, you will find a private outdoor shower with a waterfall shower head. The bathroom is luxurious and private and the Diptyque products were an excellent choice.
Overall, service at the Four Seasons was good. The property has a number of amenities that are unique and make you feel very appreciated throughout the day. Staff members constantly come by sunbeds across the resort with sweet treats like fruits, little cakes, juices, little shots of tasty rum beverages and more. There is a service member who also comes around once in a while to clean your sunglasses. They were also exceptionally good at bringing water to your sun chairs immediately when you sat down and consistently throughout the day. These types of sweet gestures really elevate the service experience overall.
Overall, we absolutely loved our time at the Four Seasons Resort in Mauritius. The comfortable, private villas and incredible food and beverage offerings alongside the amazing facilities really make the Four Seasons a standout in Mauritius. We absolutely cannot wait to return to experience more of the property and facilities of the Four Seasons.

The property is located approximately 1 hour from the international airport on a beautiful point made up of 189 rooms and 3 residences spread out across 84 acres. Guests have complimentary access to the private island, Ilot Mangenie that offers guests a beach, cabanas for rent and a casual beach restaurant.
We were met at the front entrance by the management staff and welcomed to a seated check in with fresh iced tea, macrons and chocolates as well as a great rundown of the property and its facilities. They also showed us the book they recently put together about the property that we were able to peruse while we waited and it was amazing to see how much they honor and care about the history of the resort.
Shangri-La is a true resort and it has something for everyone at every age. Whether you’re looking to do nothing but relax or have an adventure, there’s no shortage of opportunity.
The Shangri-La has incredible history on Mauritius being one of the original hotels to be built. There is stunning architecture, stonework and design throughout the resort that has been thoughtfully maintained and expanded upon. One of our favorite things to do at the resort was to explore the grounds and find new nooks and crannies to photograph and enjoy.
Shangri-La has long been one of our favorite brands and for good reason. Their hospitality, style and general consistency across hotels is commendable. The Shangri-La in Mauritius is a unique and absolutely beautiful property with so much history that we feel management does an excellent job honoring. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the resort and look forward to returning on a future trip to Mauritus.

Dolphin adventure and Island BBQ in Mauritius
We went with Mauritius Dolphins to Tamarin to swim with the hundreds of playful dolphins in the lagoon. The boat then took us off to a perfect snorkelling spot and then Crystal Island. We ate castaway roti on Île aux Benitiers island or coconut island before experiencing the fantastic island bbq. It was a great day meeting new friends both in and out of the water.
