Today’s Iran is a complicated, intriguing, but also a fascinating place, with some of the most welcoming and curious people you will ever meet. I traveled through Iran in 2013, and in this video I take you back to 10 favorite places that I visited.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We start this journey in Esfahan, one of Iran’s most beautiful and friendliest cities, attracting tourists and travelers from afar. It is filled with captivating monuments, historic buildings, tranquil gardens, museums, and in general provides a great introduction to daily life in Iran.
After Esfahan, we travel to Kerman, a city on the fringes of the desert. It is most popular for what lies outside the city, the remains of the ‘Arg’ (an ancient citadel), and the small town of Rayen with its beautiful gardens and shrine. Not far from here are the Kaluts, some of Iran’s most spectacular desert scenery. These places are best reached by private vehicle, as public transport here is limited.
Iran has a long coastline and several island, the largest of which is Qeshm, in the Persian Gulf. This island is relatively underdeveloped and retains much of its traditional characteristics. It’s a great way to get an insight into local Bandari culture, and to witness some of the local economy at work, including agriculture, fishing, and the construction of classic ‘lenge’ boats.
Shiraz is regarded as the center of Persian culture for the last two millennia, and has some of the country’s most beautiful ancient bazaars and historic mosques. It’s also home for the tombs of Hafez and Sa’di, two poets that hold a special place in Iranian society and literature. The ruins of Persepolis, just outside Shiraz, evoke images of a thriving ancient Persia, and should not be missed.
The next destination is Tehran, the bustling capital city, and beating economic heart, of Iran. As the most secular and liberal city in the country, it’s the best place to learn about modern Iran. Qom, on the other hand, is one of the conservative ‘strongholds’ in the country, and provides an interesting contrast with Tehran.
We travel further to Kandovan, a beautiful mountain village where some of the houses are carved out of eroded rocks. It’s near Tabriz, the final destination in the video, famous for its magnificent bazaar.
“DON’T Visit QOM” Iran’s Second Most Religious City
Day 111. 60km (63798kms)
A sweaty but manageable night in the tent. I woke with the sunrise so was up and on my way by 07:30, the temperature at this time absolutely fine for cycling.
A truck stop midway fuelled me with a huge plate of eggs and bread for less than a dollar. They also offered to fill my bottles and sent my off with an additional 1.5 litre ice brick. I arrived.
Qom is Iran’s second holiest city on account of Hazurat-e-Masumeh the shrine to Imam Reza’s sister Fatemeh. Because it’s such a deeply religious place some people had expressed concerns about my visiting, and certainly it could feel like an intimidating place. On the streets you can see many clerics in robes and almost every woman wears a chador. The air is heavy with the smell of Sohan, Qom’s signature saffron brittle, like an extremely fancy and delicious Dime Bar.
And so I gratefully accepted the invitation I had received last night at the mosque. Thanks to my guides and with a loaned chador I was able to visit the city accompanied by my hosts who smoothed the way for me to enter otherwise restricted sites. And so my presence was even more of a novelty than usual in Iran. After the event my guide relayed a conversation he’d had with a mullah who’d flatly refused to accept I had cycled here; “It’s not possible”.
The shrine is indeed magnificent, mirrored, and moving. But on top of this we also visited the bazaar, carpet workshops, and a local restaurant. I feel exceptionally grateful to have had the opportunity to learn about life in Qom in this way.

FINALLY VISITING THE HOLY CITY OF QOM IN IRAN | S4 EP7. PAKISTAN TO SAUDI ARABIA TRAVEL VLOG
Hey guys, welcome back to Immy and Tani. Today we make the journey from Tehran to Qom and then Kashan.
Qom is located around 140km from Tehran and today we have our first ever IRAN VIP BUS experience. The bus we take to Qom was around 2.5 hours. Qom is considered holy in Islam, as it is the site of the shrine of Fatimah bint Musa, sister of Imam Ali ibn Musa Rida (Imam Reza; 789–816). The city is the largest center for Shi'a scholarship in the world, and is a significant destination of pilgrimage, with around twenty million pilgrims visiting the city every year, the majority being Iranians but also other Muslims from all around the world. After visiting Qom, we get back on the VIP bus and head to Kashan.
The journey from Qom to Kashan took us almost two hours. We found it fascinating that Kashan is divided into two parts, mountainous and desert. In the west side, Kashan is cited in the neighborhood of two of highest peaks of Karkas chain, Mount Gargash to the southwest of Kashan (the home of Iran national observatory, the largest astronomical telescope of Iran) and Mount Ardehaal in the west of Kashan, also known as Damavand of Kashan and the highest peak of Ardehaal mountains (end part of Karkas chain in central Iran).In the east side of the city Kashan opens up to the central desert of Iran.

Visit to Qom - Iran
Qom is located in Central Iran, just South of the capital Tehran. It is one of the holiest places in the country, and Shia scholars and students from around the world come here to study in the religious schools (madrasehs). Pilgrims visit the important Hazrat-e Masumeh, which is easily recognized as the centre piece of the city.
I visited Qom in the days leading up to Ashura, the most important religious event on the Shia calender. The city seemed even busier than my guidebook had told me, and the emotions running through the shrine and beyond were overwhelming. Although somewhat off the general 'tourist radar', visiting Qom provided an interesting glimpse into the religious heartland of Iran, and therefore well worth the effort.

I made it to Iran! Visiting Qom #19
As soon as I arrived in Iran I decided to skip Tehran for the start and took the train to the next city: Qom. I wasn't really sure what to expect but oh my god what a great experience that was! Besides visiting the holy shrine and strolling around the city I met some really great people. In just one day I learned a lot about religion in Iran and more importantly that the locals are curious about other cultures, religions and lifestyles.
Qom was definitely a great experience and I'm glad I decided to got there.

Qom, located in central Iran, is known as the most religious city in the country. As I drove through the streets during the summer of 1401 (2022), I couldn't help but notice the numerous mosques and religious schools that dotted the landscape. The city is a pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims, who come from all over the world to visit the holy shrines and pay their respects to the revered religious figures buried there. Despite its religious significance, Qom is also a modern city, with bustling markets, restaurants, and cultural events. As I explored the city, I was struck by the unique blend of tradition and modernity that defines Qom.

Shia people believe that the construction of Jamkaran Mosque has some affiliations with Sheikh Hassan Ebn Mesleh Jamkarani. He had claimed that he had seen Imam Zaman, the 12th Imam of Shia, who had ordered him to build the mosque during their meeting. Just recently, the mosque has gained a great reputation among the pilgrim, especially young people.

Getting back in time to the point when the decision upon building the mosque was made, we encounter Hassan Ebn Mesleh Jamkarani. It is said that this man had a meeting with the 12th Imam of Shia, Imam Zaman (Saheb Al Zaman), in which the Imam ordered him on building the mosque.
Jamkaran Mosque has been repaired and renovated several times since its construction. The mosque has had a small building before the Revolution of Iran but has improved a lot after that. It is interesting to know that the government of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad donated £10 million to fund the project of expanding the small mosque into a massive mosque.
Jamkaran Village is located in the southeastern part of the city of Qom. You can get to this mosque through Payambar Azm Boulevard or Qom-Kashan Road.
