Gobustan & Mud Volcanoes ???????? | Day trip from Baku

During my visit to the capital of Azerbaijan, I also took a day trip around Absheron peninsula to some of the nearby attractions.
I decided to book an organized group tour, as public transport outside of Baku appears to be rather inconvenient. Be advised that prices and packages may vary substantially.
I ended up paying 50 manat, around 25 euros, but I was quoted up to 130 manat, so shop around when you are in town!

The first stop was Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient petroglyphs, or rock carvings, which depict animals, humans, chasing scenes, ritual dances and other things. Most of the rock carvings are estimated to be 5,000-20,000 years old. There is also a museum showcasing the history of the region and some exhibits.

My next stop took me to the nearby mud volcanoes, which are located on a nearby hill which can only be accessed by 4x4 vehicles. The 15 minute ride to the top was quite a bumpy experience.

Azerbaijan is home to around 300 of the world's estimated 700 mud volcanoes. They are not actual volcanoes, as there is no lava involved, but rather formed by the eruption of mud from deep below the Earth's surface.

Azerbaijan is often called The Land of Fire because of its seemingly endless reserve of natural gas. In some places, there are flames that keep on burning for decades or even longer.
One of those places is the Ateshgah Fire Temple, just east of Baku. For many centuries, this site was the holy place for Zoroastrians, a fire worshipping religion and also for Hindus.
The present structure dates from the 17th century and was built around a flame that was thought to be eternal, but went out in the mid-19th-century. At that time, pilgrims interpreted this as punishment by the gods so the site was abandoned and neglected. Some decades ago, the temple was renovated and turned into a museum for tourists, including an artificial flame.

However, there is one place outside of Baku where you can still see a natural gas fire in action. Yanar dag, meaning Burning Mountain, has been on fire since the 1950s and the flame never went out.

Coming back to Baku in the late afternoon, I had the chance to take pictures of the Heydar Aliyev Center, an arts museum and conference center designed by Zaha Hadid. Its distinctive architecture made this building the symbol of modern Baku.

On the whole, this was perhaps not the most spectacular day trip I've ever made, but it was still interesting to spend some hours outside of Baku and broaden my understanding of the history and culture of Azerbaijan.

Subscribe to this channel and start exploring Azerbaijan with #trailsofeurasiatv

Xplore Azerbaijan series came on time to Gobustan National Historical-Artistic Preserve or it's also called Gobustan National park or Gobustan Reserve which covers three areas of a plateau of rocks in the semi-desert part of Azerbaijan. We witnessed some outstanding collections of engravings on the rocks bearing testimony to 40,000 years of rock art. The site also features the remains of inhabited caves, settlements and burials, all reflecting an intensive human use by the inhabitants of the area during the wet period that followed the last Ice Age, from the Upper Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. Iris Acutiloba flower was a pleasant surprise to be met which is listed in the Red Data Book. Another rare natural event was captured with a field full of camomiles and that happens only 7 days a year.
Visitors can also enjoy Indoor Museum where there are plenty of interesting artifacts and interactive panels. It opens 7 days a week.
We noticed a wild rabbit and 2 lizards which were not filmed though but we share with you that experience. Overall environment has something which drags you back to that land and you wish to visit it again. Enjoy watching Gobustan by Trails of Eurasia TV!

Azerbaijan Trip - Gobustan & Mud Volcanoes. Ancient wonders near Baku

Hello friends!
Our Azerbaijan trip continues and today we went on a day trip near Baku. Our friendly guide showed us the two ancient wonders of Azerbaijan.

The Gobustan caves - they are one of the earliest human settlements and an ancient site of cave drawings. We went there and felt totally in awe about what we saw. It was revelation to imagine how our ancestors lived without modern technology and means that we are used to.

There's a beautiful museum with display items and from there you can take a guide to the actual caves themselves and see the rock carvings in person. It's a must do thing if you go to Azerbaijan.

The second place we visited this day was a site of Mud Volcanoes. Azerbaijan is one of the few locations in the world where you can actual mud volcanoes. These volcanoes are made of mud, water, gas and fire!

This was truly a rare and unearthly spectacle. Cannot be missed.

Join us on this wonderful journey today in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan, Gobustan Rocks -To the Caspian Sea ep 24-Travel vlog calatorii tourism video

Gobustan State Reserve located west of the settlement of Gobustan, about 40 miles southwest of the centre of Baku was established in 1966 when the region was declared as a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the ancient carvings, mud volcanoes and gas-stones in the region.

Gobustan State Reserve is very rich in archeological monuments, the reserve has more than 6,000 rock carvings, which depict primitive people, animals, battle-pieces, ritual dances, bullfights, boats with armed oarsmen, warriors with lances in their hands, camel caravans, pictures of sun and stars, on the average dating back to 5,000-20,000 years.

Azerbaijan, Gobustan Mud Volcanos - To the Caspian Sea ep 23-Travel vlog calatorii tourism video

Azerbaijan styles itself as the land of fire. It’s a resource rich country, where oil literally seeps out of the ground and occasionally just doesn’t stop burning. A lesser known side effect of the huge stores of natural resources, has been the strange occurrence of rare mud volcanoes.
I was visiting Gobustan National Park not far from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, and a place where the mud volcanoes can be walked right up to and where the brave can even bathe in them.

Azerbaijan - Gobustan (just outside Baku)

A half day trip from Fairmont Baku Flame Towers (about 65 kms or 40 miles) lies the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape featuring some of the more than 6,000 carvings or petroglyphs so far discovered in this incredible landscape, dating back to the 2nd millennium BC or even further. A trip to the museum comes first and its well worth it as you will discover the carvings you are looking for (sometimes not that evident in the rock itself!) and all is in English. A short ride further on takes you to the start of the tour - do wear flats and do take water - it's hot out there. Look out towards the sea over landscape where the waters have receded - an amazing view.
