Latvia: the most Russian country in the Baltics | «Meduza», SS marches and Riga sprats

Hey, have you tried an eSIM? Get US$3 off your first eSIM data pack from Airalo. Use code ILYA6216 when you sign up or apply it at checkout.

Is Latvia the most Russian country in the world after Russia? According to statistics, more than a quarter of its population is Russian; there are no such percentages anywhere else in the world. At the same time, Latvia has long been a member of NATO and the EU, while the Russian language has no official status here, and many Russians are non-citizens and do not have the right to vote.

Latvia always comes first to support sanctions against Russia and holds marches of SS veterans. Here they remember the Gulag, support the Maidan and let the Meduza news website work. At the same time, a third of the population still regrets the collapse of the USSR. So what is it like - the most Russian Baltic? I went, checked everything myself and brought you a new video.

The Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Kronstadt

The Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (Stavropol St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral) - Since May 2013, it has been considered the main temple of the Russian Navy and the center of the Military Deanery of the St. Petersburg Diocese.
The cathedral is located in Kronstadt at the address Anchor Square, 1
The cathedral was built in 1903-1913 in Kronstadt, in the neo-Byzantine style, designed by architect Vasily Kosyakov.
The construction of the temple was decided to be carried out on the Anchor Square, on which the old anchors had previously lain, which represented a free space that also allowed to arrange a park around the cathedral and a square for religious processions. The condition for drawing up the project was that the height of the dome would allow the cathedral to serve as a landmark from the sea, and the cross of the sea temple was the first thing that caught the eye of the navigator.
On September 1 (14), 1902, the construction of the cathedral began, which was preceded by a prayer service performed by Archpriest John of Kronstadt in the presence of Vice Admiral S. O. Makarov.
In 1907, the temple was roughly finished, the interior decoration began.
The consecration of the cathedral took place on June 10 (23), 1913
The cathedral was a parish of the Kronstadt Sea Epiphany Cathedral, services were held until 1927.
On February 14, 1930, an anti-religious rally was held on Anchor Square. Bells and crosses were solemnly dropped from the Temple.
After the closure, the cathedral was converted into a Maxim Gorky cinema. The gilding was washed off the domes, the gilded parts of the icons were broken off, the marble iconostasis was dismantled, mosaic icons were plastered with plaster, murals were painted over, relics from the gallery of naval glory and all church property was taken from the temple.
In 2002, an Orthodox cross was installed on the cathedral bell tower.
On May 28, 2013, after a major restoration, the Divine Liturgy was held in the newly consecrated church. As a gift to the cathedral, Patriarch Kirill handed over an icon of the Resurrection of Lazarus and a trowel, which was held in the hands of the holy Righteous John of Kronstadt when he laid the foundation stone of the Naval Kronstadt Cathedral on September 1 (14), 1902.
